"Oh.. but being up above the ground is so freeing, sir! Sometimes it feels as if you could really sprout wings and fly. That, and the smell of tree leaves is seriously therapeutic."[break][break]

She giggles, but doesn't choose to press the issue further for fear of seeming too self-important or rude. In fact, the young woman dips her gaze below his and blushes, losing her focus and trailing off to stare at the sweet snake that had made itself comfortable on her shoulders. Now that she was past her initial fright, she was brave enough to actually reach up and stroke the purple Pokemon's tiny head.[break][break]

However, when she looks up to see what Zac is doing, she is surprised to see him face to face with an Absol. Nervous energy rattles around in her belly at the sight, and she glances between it and the tour guide, unsure what to do or say. She chooses to say nothing instead, preferring to let them have their moment. This had nothing to do with her, and she was more than likely an unwanted addition to their little heart to heart.[break][break]

And then, as quickly as the Pokemon appears, it disappears up the mountain and out of sight.[break][break]

"Are you alright, sir?"

The voice came to Zac from far away as he stared after the Absol. "You...saw it too, right?" he asked his companion. As his composure returned he slipped back into the teacher role. "It's, uh, pretty common to see spirits up here on the mountain. So when something odd happens make sure to check with your travelling companion."
He sat down, rubbing his neck. "No harm in ghosts most of the time, but you gotta know what's playing tricks on you: your eyes, your brain, or the Pokemon."
Zac looked along the path, which climbed steeply up the mountain, more akin to a set of rocky platforms than the worn game trails further down.
"Bit of a rough ascent, this next part, so I hope you're warmed up from the hike. They're called Golurk's Steps," Zac said, as he pulled on a set of climbing gloves. He offered a smaller set to Avery. "You look pretty lithe, but feel free to use a flying type to get to the top. Just be careful not to damage the platforms."

She tilts her head to watch him, concern written in the crease of her eyebrows and the watery, wideness of her yellow eyes.[break][break]

The way the man continues to chat away, talking about ghosts, and tricks being played, suggests to her that he's rattled. As such, she keeps quiet and lets him talk, following him as best she can. He passes her back a pair of gloves, and she looks past him to the climb ahead of her. For a moment, she seems a little nervous or scared, but she seems to overcome it with the sun at her back.[break][break]

"It's not as bad as it looks," Zac said, putting on his gloves. "Once you get into the rhythm it's a good workout. No sweat if you want to use Pokemon," he repeated. Zac hauled himself up the first of the massive stone pillar. There were few footholds on the vertical slabs, it was all arm work.
"Phew! You alright Avery? Gonna be fine getting up?" Zac asked, as he climbed up another of the pillars. He reached the top and as he steadied himself his hand closed around something thick and muscular. "Bwah! Oh. Hey there buddy! Sorry to disturb your snoozing," he said, letting go of the Ekans who was curled in tight, warm coil. "Can't have you scaring the hikers, mate. I'll re-home you along with the one Avery found."

She has a determined glare on her face, but it is more amusing to look at than it is serious. But she pulls her gloves on tighter and takes a deep breath before tackling the pillars. She climbs far slower, and her little arms tremble with each pull.[break][break]

When he exclaims in surprise because of an Ekans, she mirrors his reaction with her own note of surprise. There is nothing to scare her, however, and so she blushes furiously.[break][break]

It takes a while longer before she reaches the top, and she is too tired to pull herself up the last step. She's huffing and puffing, sweat dripping down her forehead. But her eyes lock onto another Pokemon, this one with a black coat. It stares her and Zac down, and she struggles to hold onto the edge of the cliff.[break][break]

"Looks like we've picked up a guide!" Zac said happily. Be reached down to offer Avery a hand up. As they caught their breath, Zac pointed out a section of hillside. It was steep and overgrown with thick grasses. "See where I'm pointing? If you squint, you can just make out the burrows. Mountain is flush with Umbreons, though they're usually only out at night."
The sleek black form that had almost licked Avery disappeared up the path, ducking behind a boulder just ahead of them. Zac smiled as he watched it go. "She'll stick with us all the way to the peak. That's one of my favorite things about the hike up." He turned and motioned to Avery, indicating that the break was over. "The company."

Her hand fits in his immediately, perhaps a little bit desperately. And she lets him pull her up because she almost certainly has no more strength in her arms to pull herself up. Once safe on her feet and bends over to catch her breath. Her arms are like jello and her knees shake, but she's otherwise still bright and alert.[break][break]

Zac brings her attention to the Umbreon they've bumped into, and she watches in awe as it darts further up the path. It seems to meet up with what appears to be a Linoone, but none of which she'd ever seen before. It was black and white, with a tongue that hung out and panted like a dog. [break][break]

"Is that a.. Linoone?"[break][break]

Curiosity encourages her to catch her breath faster, and she pursues the creature as it bounds after the Umbreon. It appears as though the two of them might be friends, as they run in a tight circle. [break][break]

"I've never seen one like that before, and it's so friendly!"[break][break]

Friendly in comparison to the shy demeanor of the regular variants. She stoops to hold out her hand, and in it she has a fistful of Pokemon food. It comes over to investigate almost immediately, prompting her to giggle.[break][break]

"The company really is nice, isn't it?"[break][break]

The two fuzzy Pokemon greeted each other with wiggles and snuffles. Linoone ran tight circles around its glowing friend, and the two seemed content to play. "In the wild Pokemon often for inter-species friendships," Zac said. "It looks like these two are great friends." Zac bent down to look at the pair, who were yipping and growling to each other, seemingly able to understand the other's language. "Looks like we'll have to bring them back together in the future!"
A squat, purple insect emerged from the bushes. It was purple and compact, and it scuttled toward the pair with stinger raised high. "Whoa!" Zac said, moving out of its path. Linoone and Umbreon turned on the intruder. The pair were far from harmless, and Umbreon launched itself at the rude bug, bowling it over in a tangle of glowing rings and wriggling legs.
Umbreon came away limping, but the Skorupi had been completely knocked out. Zac caught the aggressive bug and approach their wounded guide. "You okay?"

Avery gasps out loud as the Umbreon single-handedly takes down the Skorupi. When it comes back limping, Avery brushes past Zac in order to dote on the poor sap, looking it over for injuries and any sign of poisoning.[break][break]

And from her pack she retrieves a berry to boost its spirits and immune system. It seems more than happy to eat from the palm of her hand, and she delicates scratches the Umbreon behind the ears, cooing softly.[break][break]

"That's a good girl, yeah? Protecting us from the Skorupi and everything?"[break][break]

route 123 | dual wild

MUSIC

The smell came from the sky.
A dapper black bird landed clumsily beside the path. It was covered in stinking, rotting, garbage. Chunks of nameless grey crud hung from its hat and stuck to its dark plumage. Zac coughed and retched. "Bleugh! Oh my- eaugh." He sent out Clawitzer, and the shrimp blasted Honchcrow with a series of Water Pulses and Heal Pulses, cleaning the gunk off the bird.
"Corvids are very -bleugh- intelligent," Zac managed, through the gagging. The bird was cleaner now, but that smell lingered. "They know to seek out people for help."
He trailed off, and threw a desperate Pokeball at Honchcrow. The smell started to fade. "Lets, uh, keep moving yeah? I'll finish cleaning him off later. Probably need something stronger than water..."
