The "Unovan-style Diner" he'd asked for didn't allow alcohol inside so he had to take his shots outside.

One. Two. A pause. Three.

Dropping his empty shot bottles into a trash bin he proceeded inside, discreetly wiping his mouth with the back of his hand.

Early evening and it was mostly empty. He had to presume Unovan cuisine wasn't popular in Lavaridge or maybe the place was most busy during another phase of the day. He wasn't complaining; the less people the better.

If he wasn't feeling exactly like himself, isolation felt like the right call to make.

While Senon lingers outside, Stormy chooses to head in and find them both a booth. Given that she was hungry, and eating at a bar was never her cup of tea because the stools were so tall she couldn't touch the ground, she took it upon herself to make sure she'd be comfortable.[break][break]

Stormy went inside without him. It didn't cross his mind to bail on her.

He at least respected her that much.

If there was enough compassion in her to go out of her way to try to cheer him up the least he could do was let her. If someone's good deeds and attempts to help got turned down too many times, they might stop with the good deeds, and stop attempting.

Sliding in next to her at the bar he stuck his face in the menu for a while. "I'll find something." He didn't know exactly what he wanted, he only knew that he'd know it when he saw it. "-but its gonna have to be greasy, and grilled."

Most of what they had to offer was short-cook standard. Fried eggs, grilled and pan friend meats, potato based sides flash cooked on a griddle.

None of it spoke to him and he decided to keep skimming until something popped out at him. If he couldn't find anything, he would take over the kitchen and make it himself.

"Well, I think I've got it narrowed down to one of two options." He could feel the alcohol sliding down and settling in his gut, which meant it was more or less already in his blood. "This place needs more lunch foods."

She reaches forward then, slow and awkward. In fact, half-way through she hesitates, but she does eventually lower her hand onto his briefly in an attempt to comfort him or draw him out of his shell. Frankly, she doesn't know what it is she's trying to do.[break][break]

There was a tone of worry in her voice that caused him to drop the menu, it reminded him of when his mother called him when he was on the road. He remembered her being happy to 'kick him out' to begin his pokémon journey, gallivanting around Kanto to "catch 'em all." He wanted to go and she wanted him to conquer the challenge if the challenge was one he decided he wanted.

But when he was gone, there was a sadness in her voice when she called.

The way she said his name. The hand on his hand. The three shots swimming in his blood.

It was all just enough to get him to cut to the thick of things. He put down the menu completely and stared back at Stormy, ever the sphinx. "Alright." He agreed, "Go ahead." to answer what he could.

Because he doesn't pull away from her, she doesn't remove her hand. It remains as a blanket of comfort, a desperate plea for him to look at her. And when he does, she smiles.[break][break]

He lowers his barriers enough that she can reach him, and she pushes ahead immediately. His defeated tone is no match for her perseverance.[break][break]

She set him straight that his apathetic eyes and cold gaze were what made her reach out. She had to know though that he looked through her because she wasn't a point of his anger or misery.

She had nothing to do with the bad things he felt. It made him want to distance himself from her and anyone worth anything to him because if you suddenly found that your mere presence was poison, wouldn't you put yourself in quarantine too?

Its not you. He mused silently to himself. You're not the problem. He frowned again. You're... So guarded in who he allowed in his life and into his heart part of him held back from acknowledging Stormy as a friend.

He would do terrible things to protect and honor his friends and it wasn't a title he bestowed upon anyone very quickly or very casually.

Still, if there was a road to walk in obtaining his friendship Stormy Silph was well on her way. That was why he cranked the lever and spun the gears of his mind to produce some semblance of an explanation for her. "Have you ever been pregnant Stormy?"

Perhaps it was her own self-destructive insecurity, that desperate need to be seen, to be heard, to be acknowledged. The way he had looked through her had been like a punch to the gut. As twisted and unfortunate as it was, she'd rather be yelled at, chastised or berated than ignored completely.[break][break]

He frowns, and her eyes are drawn to the downward curve of his lips. It prompts her to pull her hand away and back to her side of the table. There is a pause while he mulls about his thoughts behind closed doors. It gives her room to order them both a couple of drinks and wave away the bartender.[break][break]

His response, however, brings her back in rather abruptly.[break][break]

"I haven't."[break][break]

Her thoughts immediately jump to Cait. Was she pregnant? If she was, wouldn't she have told her? By some stroke of luck, however, Stormy doesn't blurt out any of these things. She maintains self-control and instead watches him patiently.[break][break]

"Have you ever been pregnant?"[break][break]

If it was rude to ask a woman's age, asking if she'd ever been pregnant was just depraved. Stormy's answer didn't surprise him, he didn't have a stake in her answer either way.

He didn't ask because he wanted an answer, he asked because he wanted to contextualize.

"There's a process to it right?" Rhetorical. "You're just living, doing your best and one day a seed gets planted." Letting go of her hand be propped his elbows on the table covering his mouth with the placement of his hands.

"Maybe you're not aware of it fully in the moment but something takes root and begins to grow. Eventually you become aware it, and then everything changes." He looked into her eyes to see if she followed his logic. "You feed it. You nurture it. You minimize risks and optimize precautions to keep it safe. If the way you live isn't conducive to its development, you change the way you live; practically overnight."

"You think of it always. You obsess over it. You start counting down the days until you have it."

Had he been a bit more raw about things he might have teared up but he was cried out. Hence his wraith-like state.

He continues, and she leans back to listen. She does so without complaint, though her furrowed brows remain tense. She's struggling to put together what it is he's trying to say, despite how plainly he's putting it.[break][break]

Stormy tilts her head, folding her fingers into her lap when his tent beneath his nose.[break][break]

Their eyes meet, his seeking hers, and she doesn't dare look away. His intensity is captivating, unnerving, and it's all she can do for him in the moment. To be present, to be alert, to be listening.[break][break]

She didn't understand; he hadn't made it very easy for her to guess what the issue was.

He fixed his posture at the bar, straightening his back and sitting tall. He made his point a little more directly.

"I had to let go of something." There was a finality in his tone. "Something I had been nursing. Something that in a sense was also nursing me." Sighing at the fact that he probably still hadn't explained it enough for her to be satisfied or understand he took in a deep breath and exhaled slowly.

Trying to force the weight of grief from coming back.

"It was a goal. That's what I was "pregnant" with; an ambition, objective, a dream if you will." It sounded a little stupid to say aloud that it was the loss of a dream that made him so different than the fireside he'd always been.

"Can't tell you what the goal was. Only that it was something that got me out of bed at a time when it felt like the whole world was still turning just fine without me."

But if he felt this strongly about it, it couldn't have been stupid.

Stormy, to be fair, had never been good at guessing games. She was nearly as dense as they come, often requiring people to spell it out for her. [break][break]

He comes at his 'issue' from a different angle, scrapping, in a way, the pregnancy shtick in favor of something else. She still doesn't understand, but she tries to. With furrowed brows, she continues to listen, trying to put together convoluted pieces.[break][break]

And eventually she snaps.[break][break]

"Oh for fuck's sake, just spit it out."[break][break]

Just as soon as she blurts that out, however, her cheeks flush with surprise and embarrassment at her own crude attitude. She blinks, processing her outburst, before apologizing:[break][break]

"Can't, or won't, Senon? And what do you mean? What happened to this goal? You aren't giving up, are you? If whatever this 'pregnancy' is is so important to you, you need to fight for it."[break][break]
