Fernando himself remains concentrated on the battle at hand. He's seen the Moltres in action once before but it lacks the same resolve it had in Sinnoh. That had been his loss, one he ate in his own wallowing despite their circumstances. Now, his mercy is non-existent, looking to scope out the extent of Stormy's built up trauma.

If she cannot hold up to the Blackout of Slateport then she will blackout here and now.

The MISTY TERRAIN finally congeals as the Tapu Fini looks to compress all its power into a single attack. Every drop of water, all the spillage from the battle's start, comes together under the deity's manipulation. As if subjected to the briny deeps itself, the arena is engulfed in a HYDRO VORTEX that looks to swallow up both Pokemon, subjecting both trainers to a sudden surge of blowback from the gathered winds and high speed inertia.

Stormy gasps, the air stolen from her lungs in a display of horror as she witnesses the Tapu Fini gather its strength. Moltres continues to fall, unable to gather its wings beneath it in time. The endure it bears is barely enough. Moltres' flames struggle against the hydro vortex. It batters and bruises, washing the bird out with sand and water until it is impossible to see the beast beneath the current.[break][break]

And Stormy feels powerless to stop it.[break][break]

In fact, the blowback is so intense and so sudden that Stormy loses her balance in the sand, and only then does she notice that the Tapu had pulled all of it away from her. She slips, stumbling backward, pushed backward until the heels of her palms smack against the ground.[break][break]

Pain lances up to her elbows at the impact and she sucks in a sharp breath. In her scramble to pull herself back together, to force herself to react, to do something, to say something - Moltres lies sopping wet and covered in sand.[break][break]

"Moltres!"[break][break]

That fear builds, and she glances to Fernando and his unwavering confidence, dedication.[break][break]

"You need to be better than me."[break][break]

His words echo in her head, softly at first. It grows in volume and intensity, and Stormy pulls herself to her feet, brushing sand from her clothing.[break][break]

Moltres pulls itself to its feet as well, water dripping, sizzling off of flaming wings. It takes effort and concentration, but the bird reignites its flames despite the cold that seeps through its skin. [break][break]

With another flurry of wings, it shakes water off itself, beak agape to pour out a channel of burning jealousy from it's core, eating up the sand and evaporating the moisture from it.[break][break]

[attr="class","spiral"]In the wake of Tapu Fini's Z-move, the water pitters out as its power crashes below its default level. The pull it has comes to a temporary halt, a drawback of harnessing the power it needs to deal a significant blow against a fellow Legendary.

This time window allows the Moltres to come back with the last of its strength. It's BURNING JEALOUSY, befitting of the conflict between them, burns the room into a smoldering humidity, scorching Tapu Fini's shell and leaving a potent BURN. Even so, such power isn't enough to do in the Tapu.

Not at this level. Not at this stage of the fight.

Whatever opportunity Moltres will find comes to a gaping close. As the fire dissipates, so does Tapu Fini's exhaustion.

Moltres seems to struggle with retaining its flames. The aftermath of the z-move seems to have really taken its toll on the beast, drawing the last of its strength out with the receeding waves. The burning jealousy hits its mark, burning on impact - but the Tapu stays standing, levitating just above the mucky sand to remain defiant.[break][break]

Stormy can see the blaze of confidence in its beady little eyes, the judgement, the disappointment. [break][break]

Not only does it spur Moltres, but it also steers Stormy out of the dark cloud hanging over her. There is a frustration manifesting at the forefront of her thought, curling her hands into fists as her gaze moves rapidly back and forth across the battlefield. [break][break]

She felt powerless - but she didn't have to be. She was making the choice to hide, to bend her knee, to give in to the rush of panic that swelled in her chest and tormented her for not being strong enough.[break][break]

But she was strong enough. [break][break]

The burning jealousy disappears into smoking tendrils, but Stormy's temperature is rising along with Moltres'. She can feel the same crackle of energy, like her skin is threatening to burst into flame. It is with measured breaths, with control, that she keeps her own fire at bay. [break][break]

Moltres does not maintain that control, however. The sand that surrounds the bird turns molten, the remains of its scorching sands super-heating and turning to glass. It manifests as a sort of makeshift barrier, the glass sticking to the Moltres' skin painfully at first as the legendary explodes, it's immolation burning away every last shred of its fire-typing. [break][break]

And when it explodes, the glass shatters and splinters off, catching Stormy's cheek and forearms with thin scratches. [break][break]

The golden and crimson flames of the Moltres are replaced with black and fuschia, its skin blackened and burnt. There is a fury in its beady eyes, and Stormy stares at the creature in awe. She had only seen this form once before.[break][break]

[attr="class","spiral"]Fernando's eyes peel when the Moltres catches what he can only presume to be a second wind. Whatever remnants of Moltres' SCORCHING SANDS give tell to the extent of its powers. When the glass forms Fernando can feel his lungs erupt in a single command. Unfortunately, he can't even hear himself as the words get drowned out by the sizzling eruption of Moltres' IMMOLATION.

"HOLD!"

But Fernando does not need to spoon feed his Tapu Fini such elementary deductions. The PROTECT comes up, a sure fire way to block an attack, shielding the Pokemon from harm. This time it doesn't crack, it implodes. The Z-move cannot be blocked. It's pierced as if it doesn't exist, irrelevant in the face of true power.

Tapu Fini is lambasted by the flames. For the first time, it feels the true potency of the flame's heat. It's as if it isn't even a water type. The way the sore extends seeps into the Pokemon's core, turning its black skin pink with an intense singe. It collapses, into its shell, rolling over as its careens in the opposite direction.

Fernando, who has held steady in the face of his own Pokemon's attacks, feels his body pushed back by the blast, heat eviscerating his the humidity, prone to leaving mild blisters along his exposed skin. The only way he can stomach the repercussions is with his awe at Moltres' new form.

"...!"

Tapu Fini sees no wonder in the new opponent. The two may share a human classification of 'Legendary' but their connection ends there. Whatever form or color the Pokemon takes, it is still an opponent. It steadies itself in its shell, hastily curling a SURF in-between its hands despite still being laid out sideways, firing it out in a single stream.

It's unaware that the water's potency no longer affected what it presumes to still be a fire type Pokemon.

With renewed strength, the Moltres has breathed in deep its second-wind. It's flames burn hotter, burn darker, as it barrels forward in a wash of black and pink. The surf that is launched, pinched into a steady, potent stream, it is split in two as the Moltres pushes forward with a sucker punch.[break][break]

Stormy's heart hammers in anticipation as the Moltres eats up the distance between the two, skirting the damp earth and drying it instantaneously in its wake. The surf is not strong enough to beat it back this time, it no longer stings the same as it once had. Moltres' fire is no longer true fire, but darkness manifested to resemble it.[break][break]

The legendary bird's scream is nothing short of a taunt, urging the Tapu to fight, for this battle is not yet over.[break][break]

"What the—" The SUCKER PUNCH truly takes them for surprise and it leaves Tapu Fini right where Moltres wants it. But up close and personal means that the water will prove more abundant. Right at the source of the SURF the water continues to leak from its opening. Now, it becomes a slugfest.

Up close now and at the opening of the shell, the surf continues to berate and batter the Moltres - but he pushes through it anyway. The worse he hurts, the fiercer, the angrier, the stronger it becomes. Talons claw at the surface of the Tapu's shell, looking to find purchase.[break][break]

This isn't a desperate act; this is retaliation.[break][break]

Moltres erupts again into another column of flame, but this time the flames are dark, lashing out in a fiery wrath. And, should the bird have gotten ahold of the Tapu Fini's shell, it would begin to fly up with aggression, pulling the two of them into the sky with powerful strokes.[break][break]

Although their size and dynamics differ, the scene plays out much like the predatorial relationship between birds and shellfish down at the Slateport Beach. There is no resource but to to continue the offense until one falls. Literally.

Their constant attacks and prying at each others stamina comes to a climax when the FIERY WRATH leads to dropping the Tapu Fini from the peak of the Gym's ceiling. It lands with a sickening thud. Only the sudden reprisal of the MISTY TERRAIN vacuumed into nothingness gives proof that Tapu Fini is finally laid to rest.

Fernando returns it immediately, a mixed look of confusion and alarm coating his features. His eyes never leave Moltres' new form.

There's nothing for her to be afraid of. Her powers may have shitted but they are her own.

That's his last thought before his eyes narrow onto her form.

"What do you have to fear?"

Like an arcade claw unhinging, the Moltres lets the Pokemon go in a dramatic flare of wings, forcing it to the ground with dark, malicious flames. Stormy sucks in a breath, ever aware of the fear clawing at her insides, at the darkness that threatens to consume her.[break][break]

Moltres lands, defiant, proud, its head held high. The Tapu Fini is recalled the moment the misty terrain disappears. Stormy can feel her hands shaking, and her knuckles are white with the ferocity in which she clenches them. Her nails bite into the flesh of her hand but she seems numb to the pain.[break][break]

Fernando's question pulls her out of it temporarily, but the magnitude of his ask makes unshed tears weigh at the edge of her vision. [break][break]

"Myself."[break][break]

She is afraid of the power she possesses, of the rage that builds so easily, so quickly in her chest, that rage that stems from Moltres itself. She is afraid of the powerlessness she had felt that night before Moltres had transformed under the pressure. They had both changed drastically overnight, though she had been too afraid to admit it, too afraid to open her eyes, to accept it.[break][break]

And to see the awe in Fernando's eyes was confusing where it should have been relieving. [break][break]

"Are you not afraid?"[break][break]

Fernando does not fear what he can understand. As long as he can analyze the situation, digest it into understandable pieces, then there will be a way to get through. Persistence, sheer force of will, has pushed him this far. It has never let him down.

What he fears is the unknown—the things he cannot uncover.

His gaze never waves despite his loss.

Stormy is the victor but she seems in tatters in comparison. Fernando remains poised, sharper in the face of adversity. All he sees is another obstacle to conquer, a new height to reach.

"Because I will overcome."

It's not a promise.

It's a threat of things to come. As the tides shift and allegiances come into question, there is no doubt there will be a moment where Stormy must pick sides. Should she choose to defy him, then he's prepared to blitzkrieg right through her.

In her trust is his betrayal. Next time he'll be ready for her.

Moltres screams a moment before she says this, and Stormy raises her hand to pull the legendary back into its capsule. She breathes out a shaky sigh, crouching down to find her sand-filled shoes. They dangle off the tips of her fingers, every slight movement spilling grit.[break][break]

With the Moltres gone, the sunny day seems to fade and the humidity returns to normal. She picks her way across the sand-swept battlefield to approach Fernando, and her hand is held out in a formal gesture.[break][break]

He pauses, before using that same hand to pat her on the head, ruffling the wet strands of her hair, before lowering it to cup her cheek. It's a momentary sight of weakness, an intentional chink within his armor. Something to throw her off and cushion the blow of having to maintain this type of perseverance without encouragement.

He sees little value in such a sentiment but everyone else can't run on an empty heart.
