Time stands still, or at the very least moves in slow motion as his fingers brush her cheek to tuck hair behind her ear. Where he touches her, her skin warms, tingles. It causes her to suck in a breath and remain motionless for fear if she moved away or made a sound, it might all fall apart.[break][break]

Did that mean, then, that she wanted him to linger? It must, because the moment his hand pulls away is the moment the sounds all flood back in. Stormy breathes out, retucking the hair he'd already expertly placed. The man's Applin huffs impatiently and it draws a lazy, amused smile from her - but her attention flicks back up in time to meet Remiel's.[break][break]

There is something unspoken there between them, a message yet to be uncovered and deciphered. They were a riddle, a mystery, a tempting twist of fate. It pulled at her to learn more, to follow the unfamiliar path.[break][break]

Unfortunately for her, the mood seems to fizzle out like a pinched flame without oxygen. She can see it in the invisible weight Remiel bears, the silence that stretches between them. For some reason it is heartbreaking, tugging at a familiarity she knows too well. It reflects in her, as well, that guilt. [break][break]

Remiel covers his hands in oven gloves and sets himself to retrieve the pie. When he pulls away, pie in hand, his glasses have fogged up as a result of the heat. It prompts a giggle only after she realizes his predicament- and after he awkwardly requests her assistance. [break][break]

Equally awkward in the moment, Stormy reaches suddenly for the piping hot glass dish. It doesn't burn despite her delicate fingers grasping it, and she takes it away from him quickly to set it down. The act is so normal to her now that she thinks nothing of it, other than the fact her hands are warm.[break][break]

"I've got it, don't worry!"[break][break]

"Thank you," Remiel says in response, removing his gloves then removing his glasses as he pulls up his apron to wipe them clean. Instantly noting how rough the apron's fabric is, however, the prince opts instead to use his shirt. He lifts the side of it up, exposing his bare waist and slightly scarred abs, as he clears the fog from their surface.[break][break]

"I really should have known better."

When he turns to see her holding the piping hot glass pie dish bare-handed, he instinctively flinches in shock. Then, of course, he is reminded of her abilities. His horrified expression quickly settles into something more agreeable instead. She probably enjoyed scaring the wits out of him, he thought. If it had been anyone else, he might not have been so disquieted and alarmed. But Stormy was special.[break][break]

Dropping his shirt and placing his glasses back on, Remiel turns to reach for his paring knife, before gesturing towards one of the kitchen cabinet's nearby with a nod. "There should be enough plates for us three in there. Forks and knives are in the drawer at the bottom right." He adds, taking a moment to gauge the expression in her eyes before turning back to the pie.[break][break]

He cuts into it carefully, the first slice releasing a gentle waft of sweet cinnamon-apple aroma. Having made sure to place his face at a suitable distance between it and the heat, he watches as his blade splits crust in two, then soundlessly slides across. Once he's finished effectively slicing the pie in half, he proceeds to create more slices at a slightly faster pace.[break][break]

Stormy sets down the dish just as Remiel lifts his shirt. Her blush is instantaneous, a knee-jerk reaction that she should have pulled away from. But her hands were full of a too-hot plate and her thoughts have slowed down and she breathes out slowly, mesmerized by the sight of skin. [break][break]

But he catches her not only with her eyes lingering, but with her hands still on the hot plate. It takes her a moment but she sees the look of horror and her hands retract immediately. There had been no intention of scaring him, not that way. Her fingertips tingle with the remaining heat and she tucks her hands behind her back.[break][break]

"Uhh.. you're welcome."[break][break]

She swallows, wiping her hands on her shirt awkwardly while he turns to grab the knife. Her attention is trained stubbornly on the steaming pie rather than on him up until he requests something of her. The blush is fading and she dips her head, retreating to find the plates.[break][break]

And she takes a deep breath both because the smell of warm apple cinnamon pie is satisfying, and to clear her chest of the fluttery, uncomfortable feelings. The woman stands on her tiptoes to reach up into the cupboard for the plates. She fishes out three, setting them down on the countertop softly before opening the drawer with the forks and knives. [break][break]

Her fingertips hover over the selection a moment, pausing as her thoughts grow cloudy.[break][break]

Remiel has finished his slicing of the pie before he's spoken, teasing Stormy for her seemingly selective pause. Stepping to stand beside her, their shoulders gently touch as he fetches the plates. "Is something on your mind?" He casually asks between the clinking.[break][break]

The green applin on the floor beneath them, in the meantime, is hopping three feet in the air in anticipation for its treat. Remiel spares it a glance, but doesn't move as he looks back to gauge Stormy's expression. Almost as if he were back at the Hammerlocke Ruins, attempting quietly to decipher the painting of a queen in noble black.[break][break]

"Hah.. right, right, of course."[break][break]

A breathless chuckle, an awkward tick, and she pulls her hands out of the drawer. Her hip bumps it back to soft-close behind her while Remiel moves in next to her. Where at first she had every intention of moving away, the touch of his shoulder against hers roots her in place. It's a harmless connection, but one she can't bring herself to break away from prematurely.[break][break]

As soon as he pulls away, Stormy moves back to the counter, utensils spread across the surface.[break][break]

"You."[break][break]

It makes her heartbeat quicken and her fingertips slow. She strokes the metal handle of one of the forks absently, but she eventually turns around to face him. Despite the flutter in her chest, her eyes are unwavering. They find his immediately, though that doesn't seem to be difficult considering he had already been looking at her.[break][break]

Remiel might have found her response amusing, if he wasn't concerned with whatever was weighing down her mind at the moment. He leaves the plates he's gathered at the counter and turns to see her step away. Why did he always feel this way? So helplessly disconnected? Was it him? Or was this truly just a universally human thing?[break][break]

In all honesty, he'd expected her to brush his inquiry off and say nothing at all. But her answer sent him spiraling into speechlessness even further instead. Him? What... what did that mean? And why? He's almost startled when she shifts around to look at him. Her red eyes capture the sunlight that filters through the kitchen window. They fix on him like a magnifying glass. Suddenly, the observer has become the observed.[break][break]

"I..." He pauses to clear his throat, settling his gaze on something else in the room for a moment before daring to look back at her. Something was different. He could feel it. In fact, he could almost see it— like the focus on a camera's lens slowly being turned, slowly beginning to reveal the veins of a fresh leaf. A new perspective.[break][break]

Or, perhaps, just another layer they hadn't seen until now.[break][break]

"Stormy... how do you mean?"[break]

This was helplessness, a giddy sense of wonder. It was a feeling she knew too well, something she'd come to fear, to anticipate with gooseflesh and that nervous tingle down her spine. She craved it, and yet she fought like hell to keep it at arms length.[break][break]

But there he was, close enough to touch. His eyes wander, attention equally anxious, analyzing.[break][break]

The tension rises, crackling between them with nervous intensity as their eyes meet. He clears his throat and she squeezes the edge of the counter, focusing on the coolness against her warm fingertips. Stormy shifts her weight, hair slipping over her shoulder. She tucks it, untucks it, flips it over her back. [break][break]

He begs for an answer, an explanation to the woman's confusing response. But words won't cut it, and words aren't what rise from the pit of her stomach like a net full of disoriented, clumsy butterflies. [break][break]

He's close enough to touch, so she reaches. [break][break]

Stormy's touch is light, brushing lighting against his chest, focusing more on the feel of fabric than the feel of skin beneath. She's hesitant, cautious, playing with fire. But she is the unburnt, and so she should be fearless.[break][break]

Her touch, though simple and subtle, expertly exposes a want he's kept guarded, causing a backdraft of fervor to wash over him and nearly reduce him to cinders. Instead, he anchors his eyes to her own, looking desperately for what lies behind it all; for an answer that makes sense. Why is she doing this? What could she want with someone like him? What did she expect?[break][break]

She speaks, and lays her intention bare. Meanwhile, the exposed, but warm, feeling in his core ties itself into a knot of conflict and confusion. It shows in his solemn expression. He mentally grapples with the idea of admitting it himself: that he'd thought about the same on countless occasions. His curiosity simmers. The want is deep-seeded; the want is there. But memories of her, and a lingering sense of betrayal on both fronts, erect an invisible barrier.[break][break]

His right hand reaches up, seemingly of its own accord, before gently framing the side of her face. He knew, despite all her strength and bravado, that Stormy had her vulnerabilities. But to feel them against his palm, to see them glistening in her hues of red so closely, despite her best efforts... it made her more real to him than any time before. It made him realize that, perhaps, he was right not to jump into this so quickly.[break][break]

Then again...

Maybe this was the exact reason they gravitated towards each other so strongly. Remiel didn't believe in the concept of two people acting as two perfect puzzle pieces to each other. But he certainly felt as though he found something close to that with the woman that stood before him right now: two pieces carved by hardships and heartbreak, two damaged pieces that just so happened to compliment the other so well.[break][break]

He leans in. The misery, the bitterness, the loneliness in him trembles. He's not delusional. This is temporary relief. This is a dangerous exploration. He doesn't want to lose what he has with her but... he tilts his face slightly to one side anyway. She's so close. She's so warm. She smells so sweet. He's craving the distraction, and he feels guilty, sure, but she wants this. And he wants it, too. So he takes it:[break][break]

A kiss; soft and smooth.[break][break]

No rush to be had.[break][break]

Only a sweet, tender savor in their exchange of lips.[break][break]

Then he breaks away, eyes closed, inhaling slow as he intimately keeps his forehead gently against hers. It's only now that he realizes he has her lightly pushed up against the kitchen island behind her, one hand on her slim waist while the other drops from her face to stroke her hair. "You don't know how long I've wanted to do that... but I... I shouldn't have. There's someone else..." He sighs against her.[break][break]

Relinquishing her waist, he parts his forehead from her own, inching backwards to gauge her reaction. "She's been gone for some time now; missing." He explains in a murmur. "I just... I haven't moved on... you know?" His gaze bears an apology; then he looks away.[break]

Silence is the only comfort she finds, at first, in the space between them. Her hand doesn't move away, acting as a tether, albeit a tentative one. He waits, and she can feel herself holding her breath. Emotions wash over the man's face like a tidal wave into a receding current, lapping at the shore of his mind as he comes up with an answer, a response, anything.[break][break]

And when his hand rises to caress her cheek, the breath she'd been holding is released nervously, caught by the hitch in her throat, the uncertainty. Despite saying she wanted this, there was a very real part of her that wanted to take it back, to reel herself back in, to not go down this path. She'd been here before, vulnerable in a man's arms, looking up to him for an answer, for reciprocated affection.[break][break]

She had been burned before, been set aside.[break][break]

But in Remiel's eyes, she didn't see the same, she saw grief, guilt. But she also saw that same hunger, that same wicked taste of desire that she had. He moves closer and she lets out a quiet breath in anticipation. Their bodies naturally come together, warm hands holding her close while her own find purchase against his shoulder, his back. [break][break]

Although the kiss is brief, it provides warmth in her chest that is real. [break][break]

The heaviness in his voice, however, brings her nothing but conflict. He doesn't move away, however, as the same hand that had held her cheek now runs through her hair. Remiel's forehead presses to hers and she can hear their breathing sync.[break][break]

And there it was. There's someone else.[break][break]

She'd had a feeling, she had seen the listlessness in him, the longing. He had been carrying a heavy weight upon his shoulders, heavier even now than when she'd first met him. But to hear him admit it out loud after their shared moment twisted like a knife, another warning sign, another step she'd taken too far. Her thoughts race for a moment before he pulls away, and she lets him, fingers dropping from their light hold around him. She's studying him until the moment he looks away from her.[break][break]

"I'm sorry. I didn't know."[break][break]

Grief bubbles up in her chest, but it is more than just sympathy. He puts into words the truth that she had been avoiding. She hadn't really moved on either, even though his casket had been lowered into the ground. [break][break]

"I lost someone too."[break][break]

He'd felt it in her kiss, that black pit of loss within her. His eyes narrow solemnly before turning back to face her. He wonders if there's more he can do. Another embrace? Another comfort? Anything without feeding that sense of guilt that lingered in their hearts. To suffer on his own is one thing; familiar, even. But to see her bearing it is a new torture.[break][break]

Softly, the scent of the Appletun pie awaiting them hits his nostrils once more. That's when he realizes his little friend, the green Applin so eager to receive his slice of it, is no longer present. "Herschel?" He hesitantly mutters, turning to and fro before checking around the corner of the kitchen island. The Applin isn't there either, and he sighs.[break][break]

"Did you see where he went?" He asks, turning to Stormy briefly. They'd touched upon a sensitive subject recently, and he wasn't opposed to exploring it further. Yet, for now, Herschel's strange disappearance seemed like the an unfortunate, but welcome distraction.[break]

Tension lingers between them that hovers between uncomfortable and welcoming. They seemed to share a sense of peace, of understanding. Even still, the silence isn't upsetting. Stormy, of course, glances away from him, but that motion quickly turns into something of use when he calls out for the little Applin.[break][break]

Her eyes scan the room briefly as she turns away from him, looking for the shape of a little tiny apple that had suddenly disappeared. There is a flare of concern in the pit of her stomach that rises all the way to her throat. It felt like guilt, a selfish buildup of emotion. She had been so caught up in whatever feelings or affections she had for Remiel, so overwhelmed by her own needs that she had disregarded anything else.[break][break]

And now the pie was growing cold and Remy's Pokemon had all but vanished as a result of her selfishness.[break][break]

"N-no, I didn't. I'm sure he couldn't have gotten far."[break][break]

Stormy brushes past him as she makes her way to a nearby room, motivations on autopilot. [break][break]

Remiel nods in response. There was nothing to worry about. The Applin was a juvenile, after all. He was easily distracted by one thing or another. He was likely in the next room over, or somewhere in the pantry nearby.[break][break]

Even so, the royal moves to check on the validity of those thoughts. He follows Stormy in tow, relieved to see her move so promptly but worried she might be blaming herself as well. Guilt wasn't a pleasant feeling for him. Especially when he scarcely felt it.[break][break]

They move back into the large foyer and grand hall, and suddenly it seems three times as larger as when they'd first entered it. Too much room for such a long silence to linger. He hesitates, thinks, then speaks to finally break it as he glances at her.[break][break]

"I'm guessing... the war is to blame? For your loss?" He asks, half-heartedly checking behind a console table.

She wanders aimlessly through the room, brushing aside curtains, peeking behind furniture, opening closets and doorways and you name it. Anything to keep her mind off of the uncomfortable situation at hand. [break][break]

And yet there is an unreasonable sense of relief when Remiel finally breaks the silence. His voice is a comfort, a light in the dark. She can feel his eyes linger on her, their warmth drawing her in. Though when she looks back to meet them, his attention has retreated back to their mutual pursuit of the missing Applin.[break][break]

"Yes. But I lost him long before the war claimed him, unfortunately. We had differing interests and dreams, and I didn't fit in his."[break][break]

Saying it out loud hurt far more than she realized. It makes her voice quiet and small, like she's choking. [break][break]
