Lex had smiled like that at Kilian at least a hundred times, if not more. It was always returned with similar vigor. Well, except this time. It seemed forced, almost. And that was Lex’s first clue that something wasn’t quite right.
The silence that followed was quite telling. As Lex continued to eat, her gaze rarely left him. She could see his mind racing behind his aqua eyes. Something was bothering him, so it bothered her for no other reason than she hated to see him upset. The momentary lapse of paranoia she had a bit ago faded. If it was something that she needed to know about, he’d tell her. Afterall, they had agreed: No more secrets.
Nearly done with her food when he finally spoke up, she paused to listen. Lex looked around at her small studio with a hint of a smile. She knew this was coming. Not only did Killian hate Slateport, but this whole minimalist, always-on-the-run thing wasn’t quite either of their style. Lex only lived like this out of necessity, not by choice. With Killian back, she was reminded what it was like to live a . . . somewhat ‘normal’ life by their standards.
“I’m listening,” she grinned, turning her gaze that had followed his to the small box back to him. She noticed, but chose to ignore, the vibrating from the kitchen, “May or may not, huh?” she laughed lightly shaking her head. She’d bet money he already had a place picked out.
There it was again. This time her brow pinched quickly as her eyes flashed towards the kitchen then back to him. This was starting to get ridiculous.
“I can find a new one,” she responded quite eagerly. It wasn’t Ritual keeping her here. Hell, she just kind of landed in Slateport and it stuck. The only thing she was looking to hang on to was Killian. She’d follow him anywhere, “Hot Springs?” there was a cheerful note to her echo, his coy smile was adorable and it only fueled her excitement, “ . . . Lavaridge?” She was almost certain that was answer, and she wasn’t surprised. It was probably the most landlocked place in all of Hoenn.
The excitement faded into irritation. Her brows pinched again, amber eyes glaring at the kitchen this time as the phone continued to buzz. Her frustration swelled with Killian’s. Eyes cut to him again after his whisper. She tried her best to smooth out the sharpness of her glare by reaching for the wine to take a sizeable sip of it.
As always, it was Killian that softened her. The sincerity in his words made her forget about the stupid phone. He seemed distraught. Lex slid her hand across the table and her fingers wiggled their way in between his, “It’s ok, Killian,” her fingers gently traced his, “If you need to answer it, just answer it,” Then maybe she would actually get him all to herself.
