The final deposit. Also known as a fucking pain in the ass to hike. Yet, here they are. All for some whimsical quest to test the region’s soil deposits on the off-chance their discovery will have a just reward.

Fernando entertains the thought both out of curiosity and as a good excuse for outdoor cardio. Without question, he brings someone along, someone to bear witness and serve as the guinea pig for when the time comes. Because, as practical as it may sound in theory, Fernando is less than stellar when it comes with believing crackpot theories reliant on magic and gut feeling.

“You keeping up?”

He calls out to her, trudging past another crag as he feels his breath shortened. The higher they go the thinner the air becomes. It’s not impactful but the difference between the base and their level is night and day.

At some point, her little garden of experimental carrot seeds had become their little garden of experimental carrot seeds. And he had the audacity to ask if she was keeping up, despite the fact that she practically lived here. It was just incredibly unfortunate and not well timed that he asked while she was bent over catching her breath.[break][break]

Normally she took her time hiking, but Fernando seemed to be in a hurry - or he just had significantly longer legs and therefore longer strides, so she was falling behind. Not that this was a race, but it was always a race.[break][break]

"What's the hurry? They aren't going to spoil before we get their. Just last week they'd barely sprouted any green."[break][break]

Frankly, she was still surprised the plants had even survived the harsh climate of Mount Pyre. Weren't there other people who'd planted them in or around Shoal Cave? Was there some sort of experiment going on that she was out of the loop for? Probably.[break][break]

With an exaggerated stretch, Stormy groans, pressing on the small of her back before jogging to catch up with the man.[break][break]

A pain in the ass does not come without its merits. The more vigorous the climb the more he has to exert himself. Self-improvement stems from sacrifices and discipline, a love and hate relationship that will come to fruition when he’s nursing the soreness in his arms and legs after they come back down.

One more outcrop of boulders leads to a clear climb upwards. The slant of the ground will make their ascension hell on their glutes, a good replacement for a Stair Master, but the clear footing means no more tripping over the occasional loose dirt or sizable rock.

It goes without saying, he doesn’t wait for her. Fernando’s more than happy to leave her behind. It wouldn’t be the first time either.

Though, he'd invited her, hadn't he? Frankly, she couldn't remember and didn't care to think too hard about it. They were here now, and she felt the ground flatten out as they reached their destination. She's speaking to the back of his head, however, as Fernando's already moving on.[break][break]

She pauses briefly to catch her breath before pushing herself to jog and meet up with him. Her shoulder brushes his and she gestures to the patches of green rising from the now-dry topsoil. There is a bright smile on her face as she surpasses him to squat down next to the plants. She reaches out to brush the lengthy green fronds.[break][break]

He has no answer for her because: one, she’s right. Two, he’s not here to assist with tending to her crops. He’s interested yes, but that interest only goes into his own discovery and details. Whether or not it withers is of no consequence, because he’ll learn either way.

“Amazing,” he answers with a flat, sarcastic tone. Mere carrots bring no interest. It’s the fact they needed to be planted here that Fernando wants to look into. There must be something special about them, after all.

He stomachs the instinct and flows with her touch, crouching next to her in a squat. “It takes on the characteristics of the soil. Mount Pyre’s topography means the soil has a variety of nutrients not found elsewhere. I assume the climate within Shoal Cave follows the same suit.”

Despite the well intentions of his words his tone doesn’t carry the same weight. But when has Fernando ever genuinely sounded supportive in something as mundane and inconsequential as someone’s night out? Only when he’s faking it to keep up appearances. For Stormy, he sounds more like their father, distracted, and merely talking to carryon the conversation.

It comes to an abrupt end when he finishes the last photo.

Small talk felt easier when it wasn't with Fernando Silph.[break][break]

His response is flat, a perfected response with little emotion behind it. She avoids direct eye-contact despite the fact she finds herself watching him, always redirecting to the carrot's ferns. [break][break]

But the question breaks the spell, and she seeks out his gaze regardless of if he meets hers. She wants him to, though, like a pathetic yearning in her chest.[break][break]

She shoves her hands into her pockets, anticipating his answer.[break][break]

He clicks his tongue, finished with the task at hand.

Stormy watches him carefully, seeing past his scrutinization and ignoring it entirely. His own concern, or attempts to express it at the very least are, for the most part, well-received. [break][break]

And then she rises to her feet, wiping sweat from her brow. The dirt on the back of her arm rubs off on her forehead and she lets out a breath.[break][break]

Another one word response. It’s true but also shows how little Fernando prefers to broach the topic. It’s never about him because it doesn’t need to be. A private life makes things easier for all.

“I suppose. I’ll have to check my calendar.”

Considering recent events. He’s more likely booked than not. But, there’s always room to cancel. It depends how things unfold.

Only time will tell.
