Adrian leaves without another word, but he must bite back his tongue. Of course they would try to handle him roughly, if he proved too unwieldy, but he was adamant there was middle ground. Or at least, he needed there to be for someone as uncouth and willfully opposed as he.

Stepping out into the daylight, his thoughts turn to Rowan and Serena, and of Howitzer and home.

How did it come to this? He would ask rhetorically before walking away in a trance, thinking on his dilemma.
