[attr="class","light"]at the research tower. preparation for testing started. many upon zenji's personal research team, provided by the league, and members of evol were called in order to assist the head scientist. since his discussion with FERNANDO SILPH and the aqua assembly. such testing was scheduled ahead of time before those of league were sent off upon their respective excursions.

zenji, with dahlia goode 's permission and FERNANDO SILPH 's backing, reached out to each avatar that was available. one by one they would be scheduled to be personally escorted to the research tower located within ever grande city. for today's chosen avatar would be the famous gym leader turned elite four flame princess, Stormy Silph .

she would come to be escorted to meet with zenji and his team by his eccentric assistant, evan. the green haired stud would merrily escort her to the white room filled with advanced technology. all funded and provided by the league. once there Stormy Silph would come to see the head scientist surrounded by colleagues. issuing a order one to the next.

upon hearing the door open, zenji would turn to meet the representative of moltres. "welcome," he greeted Stormy Silph with a small smile, "glad you could make it." those underneath zenji bowed their head to greet the famous elite four member before returning to work. while there were some who chose to stay behind to await further instruction. "i hope you're not too frightened with the many eyes on you," he'd lean forward to whisper, "between you and me my anxiety is through the roof with them hovering over me." zenji stood straight up to release a slight chuckle.

"i hope you'll forgive me for taking away your time. you must be a busy woman, being a silph and all."

It didn't matter how many times she visited, the steps leading to the laboratory and the entirety of Ever Grande City would always mesmerize her with its beautiful architecture. She wasn't by any means an expert, nor did she know anything at all about the city, but she was more than happy to stare open-mouthed in awe of the beauty.[break][break]

Fortunately, she is pulled away from that by way of zenji jabami's assistant. The young man with the green shock of hair was excitable and eager, drilling her with questions that she'd awkwardly answer with dismissal and chuckles. Her fame preceded her, it seemed, and it had only gotten worse since signing the contract. Her face was quite literally a poster for the League, a spotlight of expectation and awe for the region. They eventually make it to the esteemed head scientist himself, in which Evan lets the young woman go. She waves to him, genuinely satisfied with their conversation until now. Her head tilts back to face Zenji as he welcomes her, and she offers the man a smile.[break][break]

"I'm glad to be here, professor."[break][break]

At the mention of the many eyes, Stormy takes a second to glance around the room to find the source of his comment. It elicits a feeling similar to her skin crawling, but far less creepy-crawly and more awkward.[break][break]

"I'd love to say you get used to it but.."[break][break]

Her voice quiets as he leans in to whisper to her, and she glances back at him with a renewed smile at his candor. He did not seem at all the type to be anxious, and it was quite relieving to be proven wrong. [break][break]

"It's no concern, really. This is important."[break][break]

[attr="class","light"]it was a bit surprising that her energy felt different. it wasn't exactly like her brother. the air about her felt more inviting. a small thing to take notice of, but it was hard to not when one has an assumption.

"now, if you don't mind, we're going to go into another room. i have some people i want you to meet."

he would escort her. gesturing for Stormy Silph to follow him. zenji, during their walk over, would give stormy the rundown of what's to come first. "we're going to be getting some information from you for a bit. we wanna try learning all there is to know about you and anything else related to your ability as a avatar." nothing too serious or scary, just a simple get to know.

entering a authorization code into the room. they would head inside to find that there was a comfortable chair with a device attached to it awaiting for usage. "here you will sit upon this chair with a device placed around your head. trained researchers will ask you some personal questions. the answers will be recorded, so be sure to answer truthfully." and if there was any worry he would add, "if it starts to become too much we'll stop."

it was then that the door would open once more. walking through it had not been one, but two individuals: a man and a woman. "i would like for you to meet elena and hayden, they will be assisting us for this portion of your psych exam." he would allow for the two of them to introduce themselves.

"my name is elena and i will be the one interviewing you." she would bow her head before the famous elite four member. the speaker then transitioned over to hayden, the male, "and i'll be watching over your vitals and will be drawing a bit of blood from you. i hope you aren't afraid of needles." and then the floor would be given once more to zenji.

he wanted to ensure stormy that she was safe and had nothing to fear. not under his watch would she be made to do anything she did not want. "you'll be seeing them a lot for today during our session. we'll try to make it all short and brief, i'm sure you're busy as an elite four member. if you have any questions or concerns now would be the time to ask." the head scientist advised.

"Sure. Okay."[break][break]

She nods gently, following along with the man when he beckons her. Their conversation is light, brief, full of information regarding what is to come and the procedure she'd undergo. Admittedly, it makes her a little bit nervous. This sort of spotlight had only really happened one other time, like a mandatory therapy session after her first mission in Slateport, three or so years ago.[break][break]

As a result, her face pales slightly as they enter the next room. Two people stand with papers and pens and a chair with a headset. Zenji assures that if anything got to be too much that they'd stop. It seemed like a typical, routine procedure, nothing out of the ordinary. Honestly, she wasn't sure why her mouth dried and her skin prickled with a sense of dread. [break][break]

But she agrees, because she's expected to, promised to, and it would be over soon. He was just doing his job in trying to ensure the avatars stayed healthy and to help them and the scientists learn what it is they're even capable of. Frankly, it was a win-win. She barely even knew what she was capable of.[break][break]

"Only a little bit busy."[break][break]

She winks, lips curling up into a smile.[break][break]

"Let's get started, shall we?"[break][break]

"alright then, let's get started." and so it was time to work. once Stormy Silph had gotten herself settled into the chair and the contraption had been placed around her forehead. zenji would move into a room upon the other side. in this room the results were being displayed and recorded. as hayden prepared to extract the necessary blood from stormy, elena would begin to speak with a gentle tone.

"let's start with something easy..."

^1. how would you describe your childhood?

^2. how do you see yourself?

^3. what do you like most about yourself?

so far the first three were simple. nothing to strict nor complex. for now they were trying to work their way toward the heavy-hitters gently. "we don't wanna stress the brain out too much," zenji murmured in the other room upon watching from behind a glass window. "nothing too out of the ordinary."

Stormy breathes out slowly as she settles into the chair. Try as she might to get comfortable, the feeling of the headband squeezing her noggin is unsettling and mildly distressing. She forces a smile, though it's unclear if it comes across as such.[break][break]

And then the questions start and it's the previous statement that makes her laugh out loud. It is a sudden, awkward noise, a knee-jerk reaction. None of these were 'easy' in the sense that they should be. Nothing about her childhood was easily describable, and talking about herself in any regard was like pulling teeth.[break][break]

"Umm.. not good? It was hard, high expectations, the responsibility to be the absolute best - better than the best. There was no love, only hard work and punishment if we didn't succeed."[break][break]

Perhaps that wasn't entirely true - but it was for her. [break][break]

"I.. don't know how to answer the second question. I do my best to be a positive person, a role model, but it's hard. I'm not the best person to present optimism, probably. I think 'hothead' has been mentioned a few times."[break][break]

She's rambling, because the truth is, she doesn't see herself in any real spotlight. The third question is harder, it's the one that makes her shift in her seat. [break][break]

"I have nice hair? I don't know, you can continue with the next set of questions."[break][break]

upon the monitor there was no shift in anything that stood out to zenji. there was a small shift here and there, but that seemed to be unrelated and a natural response. especially considering the questions that were being asked. zenji would place his finger upon a button, his voice would emerge throughout the room, "remember to be as truthful as you can be and recall what you can."

the next set of questions were probably simple for her, right? for what zenji thought was simple was probably subjective. especially considering how she responded to the first three. thankfully she was of sound mind and had the inability to do as such. we can rule any possible mental health solutions out of the way.

Stormy breathes out to steady herself, and the next questions are surprisingly a relief. Quietly, she nods, mulling over the questions and drawing on the memories and the feelings. It spurs warmth from the pit of her stomach, a sense of urgency. [break][break]

"I do remember. I remember everything."[break][break]

To better visualize, Stormy closes her eyes and takes a deep breath.[break][break]

"I was anxious, but driven. I had something to prove to myself in climbing Mt. Pyre, in completing the ritual and meeting Moltres- even if it was a waste of time. The journey, the lighting of the lanterns and the pushing myself past my physical limits, the exhaustion I felt was.. what I needed."[break][break]

She remembers the ache of her muscles from the climb, the heat of the torch against her skin and how heavy it had been to lift it over and over again. [break][break]

"I felt strong, like I had a purpose, even if it was something as mundane as lighting two dozen or more lanterns."[break][break]

Her brows come together into a frown, a conflicted expression that represents the difficulty behind her next response.[break][break]

"I.. feel less confident, I suppose. Despite doing everything I believe that I could do for the region, it wasn't enough. I have this power, this blessing from Moltres and I still feel uncertain."[break][break]

[attr="class","light"]elena's orbs softened upon the third answer. zenji, who beheld a neutral look, listened as she spoke. her body began to emanate a slight warmth that caused her vitals to slightly shift. they were abnormal and slightly above the average human's ability to generate such a temperature. but nothing that was out of the ordinary or too noteworthy.

as stormy spoke, zenji listened. his gaze became narrowed. whispering to the individual recording her results. zenji would come to exit the room next door and entered back onto the scene. kneeling beside the bounded avatar in order for the pair to meet eye to eye. he would place himself physically at her level, "stormy," he called out to, "may i ask you a question?"

once she was to give him permission he would say, "tell me..." zenji paused briefly, "...why do you feel uncertain?" elena and hayden watched from the side. wondering as to why zenji diverted from the questionnaire so suddenly. "do you not feel as if you deserve moltres's blessing? or is it by chance something else?"

Discomfort settled in her belly, too warm. It made her nauseous and for a moment she felt guilty, and focusing on it only made it worse. It blossomed, growing beneath the people in the room watching her. Anxiety convinces her that the headband is tightening around her head, suffocating. She steadies her breathing because to show fear is to be weak.[break][break]

Zenji's voice, hollow from this distance-- what distance? Suddenly, she could feel him kneeling at her side. Her lips move, a slight tremble to the way she parts them to respond. [break][break]

"No-- no that isn't-- Moltres is the one thing that I am certain of. I have just fought really hard to stand where I am now, and it doesn't feel like it's enough. I-- still feel like I have to prove myself around every corner."[break][break]

She could feel how selfish and self-centered those words were, how arrogant and small. [break][break]

"I'm sorry."[break][break]

[attr="class","light"]her faced was painted with hesitancy and her words were full of longing. stormy possessed a strong desire to want and shine as bright as the sun. for what she thought was selfish had only been but a simple human trait: growth.

"it's not wrong to want more for yourself."

it was never wrong to want more out of life. "you have nothing to apologize for," zenji responded, "in fact, personally, i think this is a piece of moltres creating a desire within you to grow like a raging fire. longing to burn and grow." to serve as the representative of moltres only made sense for stormy. "is it possible that you may be confusing the need to prove yourself with the desire to grow?" considering who her brother was. it would be a surprise if she didn't have an ambitious nature.

"you're an ambitious young woman with a lot of time to prove to yourself. you're way too ahead of your time to be worried about such trivial matters." he'd place a hand upon his own chest, "you've got a raging fire in that chest of yours. but you have to remember to not be so hard on yourself or you might burnout too early." his face remained straight even though he uttered what he thought to believe words of encouragement.

"i'm rooting for you, kiddo."

a hand would be placed upon her head. "my job is to make sure you're as healthy as can be, and i'll make sure of it that you will be able to become someone you're proud to be." it wasn't zenji's job to fulfill stormy with any form of encouragement. it wasn't like him. but when it came to those who were younger than him, he couldn't help but act as a listening ear for the youth of today. it was annoying, as much as he'd like to admit, but fulfilling in a way.

had she anything to say to him the head scientist would wait before continuing onward with testing.

Stormy falls silent under his careful gaze. Doubt and uncertainty continue to weigh heavily in her chest despite his kind words and his encouragement. What he's saying makes sense and she knows it, wants to believe it. And yet that nugget of self-doubt is like a disease. [break][break]

"It feels wrong, though, to want more than I already have."[break][break]

She sighs, though his hand upon her head is reassuring. It's because of that that she doesn't pull away, and instead looks up at him as a younger sister might her big brother. [break][break]

"But I will do my best not to burn out."[break][break]
