matias has not lost hope. his overconfidence is what assures him that the four knocks on her door will be answered, but more so than that, that it will be met with open arms. when the door finally opens, a wide smile is already plastered on his face.

There are four knocks at the door that prompt Stormy to glance over her shoulder to the calendar on her fridge. She's forgotten to cross off a couple of days so it takes her a moment longer to squint and come to the conclusion that she wasn't expecting anyone - nor did she have anywhere important to be. Which meant that she wasn't expecting anyone.[break][break]

And yet the presence at her front door does not simply go away, and she sets down whatever it was she'd been holding to approach the door. When she opens it, she's met with a smiling face. Her name falls from his lips and she blinks, brows quickly furrowing into surprise and confusion.[break][break]

The door swings away from her fingertips and her hand falls to her side.[break][break]

there is no hesitation in the way matias closes the distance. how his arms fall around her, how he shifts closer to embrace her — it all feels natural. second nature. as if they were still tethered. he doesn't even register the possibility of it being awkward or overbearing, so when he pulls away, an even wider smile breaks on his face.

"it's been too long, hasn't it? oh, i got you something—" he raises his hand that had been carrying a plush toy of a castform. "i remember it was your first pokemon. can't quite remember what you called him, though. cast? casty?"

She can feel her heartbeat quicken and her arms slacken when he steps close to pull her in. Although his hug is warm, she finds it difficult to respond, unable to come up with something to say. Her returning hug is meek in comparison to his enthusiasm. [break][break]

All at once, emotions hit the forefront of her thought and she freezes. In his hand is a Castform plush. Her breath hitches, a choked noise that she doesn't catch in time. Her composure, while already lost given the suddenness of his visit, crumbles entirely.[break][break]

Her voice breaks and the shimmer of tears gives away the pain she's holding back. Memories flood to the surface that she can't control and she blanks, unable to respond further.[break][break]

too caught up in the joy of a reunion, matias almost misses the shimmer of tears. it's only then that he realizes the gravity of the situation, that there's something else that's veiled behind her expression. instincts kick in, and he raises a hand to cup her cheek; thumb wiping away stray tears.

His voice sounds far away and muffled. She can only hear the thunder in her chest and feel the lump in her throat, too painful to swallow, impossible to ignore. It leaves her breathless, and it is fear that roots her. She doesn't see Matias in front of her anymore, she's seeing the darkness, the monster that exists in her dreams.[break][break]

Stormy blinks, jolted from the memory as the skin of his palm brushes her cheek. She flinches, exhaling sharply before realizing that the gesture is familiar. His thumb wipes away what tears fell and she breathes in shakily to steady herself.[break][break]

"He's gone. He-- he died during the blackout of Slateport. I lost him."[break][break]

it sounds like an admission of guilt, that somehow it was his fault that she lost him. in a way, there is guilt within him; guilt from not being here, in hoenn, where his family are, where his family have been fighting and struggling and surviving. his expression levels for a moment, and he finds himself clearing his throat to help ease the words.

"i lost mine, too, in kanto. it's painful, i know, and it was more painful that i had no one to turn to. i imagine you must have felt the same way."

It is as if a dam breaks and she can no longer hold onto the lump in her throat. Her teeth grind together and she glances down to avoid looking at him, to prevent him seeing. In doing so, she breaks away from his touch, a quiet sob making her shoulders shudder.[break][break]

I almost lost Moltres, too.[break][break]

Her guilt and grief squeezes painfully in her chest and she clenches her fists. Whatever effect Moltres has on her emotions is silent, as if even the legendary bird has nothing to say or do to comfort her. Perhaps even it was still displeased with her actions during that fight.[break][break]

"I didn't tell anyone."[break][break]

Everyone had lost people, Pokemon. She wasn't special.[break][break]

With her own thumb, she wipes away remaining tears with a sigh. She glances at the man briefly, her eyes sharp despite her earlier admission of frailty. It seems that she's composed herself, and she even goes so far as to reach for the plush he had originally offered and she'd been struck silent by.[break][break]

Once again, however, his words strike a chord in her she isn't expecting. Just as her fingers brush the fabric of the Castform look-a-like, they falter. Her eyes return to his face in a mix of surprise and relief, maybe. [break][break]

Back then she had made a point to turn her nose up at her adopted family, to turn the other cheek and effectively disown herself. She'd never fit in and never wanted to. What an un-Silph-like thing to say. Her scoff is barely masked, the click of her tongue slipping through before she could catch it. She starts for the kitchen, back to her cup of coffee and the barely touched coffee pot. [break][break]

"How do you take your coffee?"[break][break]

Whether or not he accepts her offer, she refills her own mug at the very least. And, with both hands clasped around the warmth it offers and the lip of the cup pressed to her bottom lip, she peers over the edge to watch her brother.[break][break]
