Locke hopped off of Gyar-Gyar’s back as they pulled up beside the pier. Sob-Sob hesitated for a moment, only leaping off the Gyarados when their new trainer spread their arms out to catch him. “Thanks for the ride. I’ll get you something good in the city,” Locke promised the sea serpent, who only huffed in response before being returned to his capsule.

With just him and his new friend left, Locke set his bag down on the planks and settled in for a quick break. Sob-Sob watched curiously as he rummaged through his satchel, finally producing half a sandwich and a bag of chips. “I hope you like ham and cheese,” he said as he broke off a piece and offered it to the Sobble.

A rustling beneath the pier caught Locke’s attention before he could even take his first bite. Keeping a firm grip on the planks, he carefully peered over the side.

There, nested among the wooden supports, a Noctowl was furiously trying to remove a plastic six-pack ring from its leg. Upon noticing the human’s presence, however, it fixed a mean glare at Locke and puffed out its feathers. A clear warning not to approach.

Locke righted themselves and weighed their options. Obviously, they couldn’t just leave it like this. But how to get close enough to help? Retrieving a multitool from their pack and saying goodbye to their sandwich, the world was turned upside down again as they draped themselves over the edge of the dock.

Before the Noctowl could make good on its previous threat, Locke tossed the remainder of their lunch into the owl’s nest. The bird’s hunger took over its instincts, likely having been unable to hunt on its own for a while now. The temporary distraction was just enough for them to flick out the scissors and start inching towards the Pokémon. If they could just reach a little farther…

The scissors snapped shut in the same moment the Noctowl decided enough was enough, lashing out at the offending trainer with a terrible screech. Elation was quickly replaced by fear as the shock sent Locke tumbling into the water below, the plastic trap slowly drifting down after him.

It took him only a few seconds to resurface, however, sputtering salt water as he collected himself. Above, the Noctowl seemed to have decided it was entitled to the rest of Locke’s lunch, tearing into the bag of chips left unattended on the dock. It showed no signs of leaving after it had its fill either, claiming his bag as its new nest and leaving the hungry human no choice to but to carry it along the next leg of his journey.

Locke attempted to capture the wild Noctowl!
