HER ANSWER IS LAUGHABLE. Fernando remains conscious of his volume but he answers her accordingly. Those eyes start to soften, unwinding as he settles on the fact that this conversation isn’t worth entertaining.

“Sure,” he shrugs. “You know what I didn’t feel? That you would get it on your first guess.”

Because that wasn’t an answer. But maybe that’s all she takes him for.

The man’s bait game was as strong as his stroke.

Lulu didn’t like not ‘getting’ things. She had to know. Fernando was very good at dangling the right mystery. It had already nearly killed her once. As she peered down into the hole of her judgment, it took a godly power, perhaps in defense of Walsh himself, to pry the shovel from her hands. Stop digging.

“Mm.” she sipped her drink, unsure. Just generally, about everything. “So…”

“I feel you’re messing with me.” Shovel up. “I’m serious. Can you? Feel it?”

FEELINGS. Fickle instinct caused by synapses of the brain. To hold them as the truth is a human trait. One expected of most but one just as fallible. For someone as certain as Fernando, feelings mean little. Either she is an Avatar or she is not.

THERE ARE LESSONS IN STORIES. Some are extensive. Epic tales held within the spine of well worn tomes. Fernando’s is simpler. It all starts with a question and ends with a lesson learned. The only issue is that most lose interest well before the final conclusion.

What does he have to tell her? He pauses, straightening up.

He was right, and she didn’t argue; partly because she was bound into agreeance by his power over her, but also because Lulu was working on a time machine. Patience? Fuck the whole construct that had invented its necessity.

She wanted answers now, not at the end of whatever psychological maze he was attempting to lead her through with a final punchline. She at least knew that much, psychic fuckery be damned.

Alas, she derailed herself in desperation.

Sorry for what?

If he knew, she hoped it would be clear in her eyes. She didn’t attempt to hide the truth, despite not speaking it. She couldn’t.

I can't.

“For not telling you sooner—regardless of whether you knew.” She lied—maybe.

“I want you to trust me.” A truth.

Fernando laughs inwardly, reclining for a moment as he draws into himself. A quick inhale, then exhale, steadies himself to place his finger against her forehead. Perfect place for a bullet.

“I do, to an extent.”

He moves it upward and against her hairline, brushing a few strands away.

“All I want is what’s best for you.” A phantom smile surfaces. Is it his or Tapu Fini’s?

“Because I care about you.”
