In the shadier side of Slateport, where the lanterns still creaked, the wind still whispered, and the roads were still upturned still lay his apartment. When one turned away from the twinkling lights of Upper Slateport, and instead towards the twisting, puzzling roads of their lower, trashier sibling, they would find Jayden Cross' appointment hidden been the plethora of houses that all looked alike.

From the outside, it looked unassuming — maybe even questionable.
[break][break]
Dmitri had many properties, none of them quite like this, but they'd had to sell all the more established real estate venues to pay for the lawsuits. They'd been claimed by the bank, or so the paperwork wrote. Either way, Jayden preferred this over the lavish style of any of the better apartments on the higher side of Slateport. This ... in it's own way, was comforting.

Jayden was sitting at the edge of his bed, laptop balanced on his knees as he browsed through the internet. Or at least what appeared to the untrained eye to be browsing through the internet, but was actually him checking up on the status of his father's lawsuits, of Team ROcket's movements since his hospitalization, and the existence of any remaining business contacts that Gavin had not helped him already be rid of. He was half-way througgh the email of a moving a pharmaceutical shipment when the doorbell rang.

[break][break] The boy blinked. Who could it be?

[break][break] He did not have... friends.

[break][break] Either way, he rose to answer it, placing his laptop on the bed and shuffling over to the door, throwing on a jacket to hide his bandaged arms and waist. The hallway light flickered on as he slipped on his shoes and answered the door.

Finally he arrived at the door of Jayden’s apartment. it was a journey to get here, Asriel made the mistake of going to other apartments thinking it was the correct one, not that it was his fault - the cheaper apartments of slateport didn’t display addresses effectively. Asriel had always disliked slateport, but he disliked the part where Jayden lived even more. Checking one last time to make sure he was at the right place, he sighed and knocked on the door.

Tapping his foot impatiently as he waited for it to be opened. Asriel hadn’t seen Jayden for awhile, he had been wondering why he was MIA - and was partly surprised when he found out that he had been poisoned.
once the door creaked open, Asriel would let himself in, placing some flowers he bought from a street seller into the mans hands. “hey, how you feeling?” Asriel asked removing his shoes before stepping inside.

Fingers curling over the handle, he twisted the door knob and it opened, revealing a face that was surprising — yet familiar.

[break][break] "Asriel?" the twenty-four year old said, blinking with soft surprise, as a potted plant was thrust into his arms. He hadn't seen the other Rocket member in what had felt like ages — before his hospitalization, surely, and maybe sometime before that. His memory was still foggy from the events before the poisoning. It was quite possible that he hadn't even caught up with the other since his return back to Hoenn.

[break][break] Either way, he stepped to the side and allowed the white-haired man to enter his apartment, watching him as he took off his shoes. Nothing seem to strike Jayden as unusual until there was a soft, nearly inaudible click. It was not the click of a door — no, it was —

[break][break] Suddenly, popping on from the wall, was a compartment that released. A dagger, sharp as the edge of a Druddigon's fangs sailed through the air and made to carve out Asriel's face.

[break][break] Fortunately, Jayden was just as quick. Dropping the pot from his arms with a clatter, he leaped forward and grabbed the dagger's hilt just before it made a permanant mark in his friend's face, the point of it clearing just enough to make a pinprick in the other's cheek — at least, if Asriel didn't move away himself. With his other hand, his palm pressed against a hidden screen against the opposite wall, his fingertips registering with the house's security system and turning the rest of the traps off swiftly.

[break][break] At least, Jayden had the audacity to look somewhat abashed. "Sorry. I wasn't expecting anyone."

[break][break] Between their feet, the crumbled remains of Asriel's housewarming gift lay — an unfortunate mess.

"Haven't seen you for a long while, jay." Asriel responds to Jayden's startled reaction with soft laughter, trying to recall when it was they last met,back in kanto...?" He asks out loud, unsure if he was remembering things correctly.

Asriel was not paying attention to his surroundings. He didn't think that Jayden would be the type of person to booby trap their home either, so when the man reacts in what seems like a second to stop a kunai from decapitating he is lost for words. He remains speechless, gaze dropping towards the mess and the kunai.

"it's fine.." he forces a smile, giving him a small nod. "so wheres the broom?"

[break][break] The old nickname struck a cord in Jayden, bringing forth a lifetime of memories. Some bad: His brother's piercing smile and bloodshot gaze. Teeth snagged into skin. Others just as good: hanging out after mission details, sharing a scone beneath the roof of a red building, standing back-to-back-to-back with Razz Kingsman and Suzume Amemiya and Asriel Pryde all together.

[break][break] His body, instinctively, froze — and then unfroze.

[break][break] Moments later, as he stared in the other's eyes, a dagger mere inches from his face, Jayden pulled back. With a breath, the boy pockets the dagger and disables the booby traps. As is normal, Jayden apologizes and Asriel accepts, and the dark-haired boy turns his gaze towards the kitchen, where a broom is propped up against the island counter. "Over there," he gestures. He lets Asriel pass him, if he wants to, to get to the broom and instead pick up from their earlier conversation.

[break][break] Hand rubbing anxiously against his neck, he responds. "Kanto, probably. When did you get to Hoenn?" The last few years seem to be a blur — the recent months, even moreso. Hadn't it seemed like a lifetime ago that his father had taken them all on a trip from Galar to Kanto, then Kanto to Hoenn, to kick-start Team Rocket's new life here?

[break][break] How things had changed. Or perhaps , he thinks, looking at Asriel now, haven't changed.

He moves towards the kitchen, eyes locating the broom leaning on the wall. Asriel grabs the broom and dustpan, returning back to Jay's side afterwards. It was a bummer that the gift was ruined, but it couldn't be helped he could always get another one if needed. "ya, most likely." He nods, so much time has passed since then.

Asriel begins to sweep away the glass and dirt carefully, looking up at Jayden once he swept it all up. "how you feeling now?" He finds it a little difficult to converse with an old friend, time has created a drift.

Asriel gives him a non-answer, which is pretty par for the course when it concerns the Pryde brothers. Even as a child, Asriel had not been much of a talker, which was saying something, since it wasn't like Jayden had been either.

[break][break] Either way, even if Asriel didn't want to answer him, Jayden figured he would be able to get the information one way or another. He had heard murmurings of older Rockets — Kanto Rockets — re-joining their ranks, but he hadn't known the exact details. Much of it was simply rumor — ones that he could no longer dismiss, with Asriel Pryde standing in his living room.

[break][break] As the younger Rocket sweeps up the remain of the plant, Jayden steps over him and to the kitchen proper, turning on the gas and boiling some water. It is then that the older Pryde speaks, which causes Jayden to tense. Then, he reminds himself that it is just Asriel — they are friends. Or at least, they were friends and that should at least count for something.

[break][break] As the water comes to a boil, he takes it off the stove and then pours it into two nearby mugs — one for him, and one for Asriel. "The doctors told me that I needed to rest for a few more weeks," he says instead, untwisting a small jar of looseleaf tea — it comes in tiny little stars, which Jayden prepares in a small bag, before dropping it into his own mug. He slides over the small trey, which has a selection of tea and coffee for Asriel to choose from, before looking up at him.

[break][break] His smile is wry. "Is it stupid that I don't feel like listening?"

It's something Asriel is rather comfortable with. Even though he can hold a conversation with little problems, he prefers to not speak. He glances towards Jayden as the older man moves past him towards the kitchen, Asriel continues to clean up the mess - finishing the sweeping quickly and dumping it into the nearest trash can.

He also steps into the kitchen, taking a seat at one of the chairs by the dining table watching as Jayden pours him a beverage.
Eyes narrow when Jayden speaks of not being completely healed, a frown appearing and vanishing quickly.

"Very" Asriel replies in a blunt manner, a hand randomly selecting a teabag when Jayden presents the trey to him. He drops the bag into the mug, giving it a light swirl before lifting the mug and sipping down the hot tea.

"You haven't changed at all."

The bluntness of the other's comment makes him let out a soft laugh, a surprised puff of breath. He should have expected it — after all, even more than him, Asriel was good at following the rules. It was why he was Raphael Pryde 's remaining son, and why he made such a good member of Rocket.

[break][break] Jayden thinks of how Cillian Quinn had told him to rest. The boy knows it too — that it is foolish to expect anything quicker, that he is only human even after his father's attempts to make him something more. Yet, there is still that dull ache in his chest as he remembers how much of a failure he had been to get caught in the first place. Regret.

[break][break] He swirls the contents of Asriel Pryde 's tea together, before pushing the steaming mug towards the other.

[break][break] "Did you think I would?"

[break][break] Jayden looks up at his childhood friend, expression patiently expectant.

He nods in gratitude. Gently blowing to cool down the shimmering beverage before indulging in his first sip. The tea was ordinary, nothing unique about the taste. Regardless Asriel still drinks it, intent on finishing the beverage.

Asriel glances up at Jayden with the question, exhaling gently. "No" He stated plainly, taking another sip of the tea. Truthfully he was glad that Jayden didn't change, but he wouldn't let him know.

The quiet that settles inbetween them is a comforting one. Where as Razz Kingsman had always been a child of quiet calculation, always curious, always searching, always wanting — Jayden and Asriel at least share one other thing in common. Acceptance. Maybe it is for that reason the two of them found themselves in this spot, even years later, as if age and time and other-worldly plot devices had not already torn them apart.

[break][break] To the other's question, Jayden shakes his head.

[break][break] "Not quite. The poison on the dagger is still being investigated by the lab," he says, which isn't false. These things - protocol - take time. He fingers his own tea bag, watching as the steam rises to the air. "... It's probably one of my father's contacts, though."

[break][break] It should have come as no surprise that, even after all of this, Dmitri's influence still remained. The loan sharks would still persist. Some of them had paid for it.

"Still?" Asriel questions when Jayden explains it further. Eyebrows scrunching with concern and confusion. He knew that the labs needed time to process results but the wait seemed to be a little to long for Jayden's case.

He releases a sigh, irritated, disappointed. Taking another sip of the tea, he glances back towards Jayden. "Explains the delay for the labs." He speaks with a grunt, shaking head in a disapproving manner.
