It could have been bad.

As it glared down at its opponent, the Hitmonchan went to work at freeing itself. Even as the Crabominable reeled back...

’Hit..hit..hit..hit..hit..hit!’

CLOSE COMBAT on its own frozen leg broke it free in sheer desperation—just in time to dodge the DYNAMIC PUNCH in full. Hitmonchan leapt away, leaving behind only blocks of ice in the sand. Lulu grinned.

“Good! BULLET PUNCH!”

From the side, the pokemon’s glove sailed at twice the speed of sound towards the spot right behind the crab’s closest arm.

The sound of shattering ice was unmistakable, and it came just as Crab swung. Hideo’s heart nearly stopped as he waited for the sound of an impact.

And what he heard was the sound of a fist whiffing through the air. Then his opponent ordered her Pokemon to attack.

Dammit.

The hit came in too fast for Hideo to speak; Crab was reeling before he even heard the impact. The exhausted Crabominable tried to keep his foot, tried to raise his arms to keep fighting, but that hit just took the fight right out of him. He stumbled around for a moment before a making a dramatic twirl - and falling to the ground.

“Aaaaaaand Crab’s downnnnnn,” the Rotomdex said, “I’d do a countdown, but I think we all know it’s over.”

Hideo sighed, retrieving Crab’s Pokeball and pulling him back in. It was his second match, and it was his second loss. Not the best start, but he wouldn’t let it deter him.

He looked towards his opponent, and smiled. “Guess it’s your win!” he said, “Congrats!”

Crabominable was hit by Bullet Punch

Victory. Over a child, but still.

Hitmonchan pounded its gloves together and raised them up, stamping in the ground a bit. Lulu smiled, impressed with its performance. The match was called, and a red beam returned the pokemon to its capsule.

“Thanks! Gave it a good go, kid. Good luck in the rest of this thing.”

A thought lingered on the way out. Since her memories had begun to return, she’d finally begun to question: how had she regained her eyesight? Had FERNANDO SILPH repaired it somehow? It was the only conclusion to be drawn from what she could put together of her still fragmented timeline.

One way or another: in this world, it was possible.

She noted Hideo’s name, before it disappeared into the staggering bracket.
