As if double battles weren't bad enough, here he was learning that tripple battle was a thing. What was the point? How quickly can one weed through their recovery items??

That's what it felt like to Sam. But at least he was facing somebody who was of note.

It wasn't as if she was the prime star of Hoenn, or anything of the sort. Sam just happened to have read and kept up with the HNN frequently. That toppled with his memory which was borderline eidetic; yeah, he recognized Stormy Silph.

"I feel a bit silly being pinned against somebody who's such a legend." Sam's voice was a cool and mild tone despite being against somebody who could be champion, so some had claimed. He approached the middle of the battlefield to shake her hand as a show of good faith.

"Best of luck either way."

He was mostly talking to himself. Woo boy what had he gotten himself into??

Stormy can't help but smile at his honesty and wink of reluctance. [break][break]

"You can always turn back. But this is just for fun, anyway."[break][break]

He shakes her hand and she returns the gesture, her own hand hot to the touch. She squeezes before letting go, allowing the man to walk back toward his side of the battlfield. The crowd watching them cheers, shouting words of encouragement and anticipation.[break][break]

It wasn't everyday that one of the elite four participated in battle, as disappointing as that might sound. What with the war and uncertainty and rebuilding of the region, carefree battling just wasn't in the agenda.[break][break]

Honestly, this event was a breath of fresh air she relished. This was a chance to practice her skills and perfect details of her battling style- if she even had one. [break][break]

"Best of luck, stranger!"[break][break]

And then she tosses three Pokemon out onto the field: Bulbasaur, Fletchinder and Castform.

A castform, a fletchinder, and a bulbasaur-- as she was known for, she was coming in at full force with her flaming force. If it were him, sunny day, fire form castform, solar beam with one turn bulbasaur, along with its synthesis, and that fletchinder coming in hard with speedy attacks.

But then again, Stormy Silph wasn't him. The castform likely had the weather attacks, so Sam awaited the call for who would go first, and while he did, he tossed out the pokémon he had registered for this particular battle. Larvitar, chimchar, and gastly. Hopefully this would pay off, and he wouldn't be wiped completely...

Yeah, not a chance.

Though he had held his own against kyle lopez's mightyena's. So maybe he'd be able to prove he wasn't completely incompetent.

Bulbasaur was her least familiar Pokemon, in terms of usability. She was, to some degree, a fish out of water- but at least she wasn't using an actual fish. [break][break]

The little green bulb struts forward slowly, yawning itself awake. Stormy breathes in, expression thoughtful, as she sizes up her opponents. With Castform's setup, she would be boosting the potential of two out of three of the guy's Pokemon. Both Chimchar and Larvitar had the potential to take advantage of the sunny day.[break][break]

Which meant she just had to be faster.[break][break]

"Castform, set-up! Sunny day, please!"[break][break]

The little floating cloud takes center-stage, glowing and trembling with power. Somehow, she makes the clouds part and the sun come out, and she transforms into a bright little ray of sunshine on the battlefield. The rest of Stormy's troupe follow suit, warmed by the sun and energized by it's rays.[break][break]

"Speed boost, and begin offense!"[break][break]

With a giddy little chirp, Fletchinder performs a tail wind, gusts of wind aiding the rest of her team. Bulbasaur steps up to the plate, long vines extending from her bulb to vine whip in the direction of the Larvitar.

Luckily enough for Sam, the bulbasaur didn't charge up for a solarbeam that would completely obliterate the larvitar. Just a vine whip that the dense rock type could take thanks to her natural defense. Though, admittedly, it likely wouldn't last long.

"Chimchar, draw their attention. Put that bulbasaur to sleep, gastly. Larvitar show her pokémon how that vine whip made you feel!"

Each call followed with a pokémon leaping into action. His chimchar turned her flaming rump around, giving a whistle and wiggling it to TAUNT the fletchinder and bulbasaur to attack her. Gastly focused on that bulbasaur as well, swirling his gasses around in the air to try and create a hypnotic trance(HYPNOSIS). Lastly came his ever slow but amazingly powerful larvitar, throwing her hands forward to raise the earth behind the opposing team. As the land rose, it caused a ROCK SLIDE, boulders and rocks tumbling down to crash into the team.

This felt like it would turn out well, but she was Stormy Silph and likely had a strategy to combat this. Though with the raised earth, could she really even see the field? It wasn't raised terribly high, but high enough to hit that fire bird as it crumbled.

Bulbasaur's eyes widen in surprise as two of the three first turn to face her. She falls for the taunt immediately, too absorbed in the aggressive chatter to dare turn the other cheek. But it proves to be her downfall, as she catches sight of the hypnotic trance just long enough for it to make her teeter. [break][break]

The poor babes eyes droop and she is unable to hold herself together. She crumbles, face-planting into the dirt just as the earth begins to rumble. [break][break]

Fortunately, somehow, Stormy's Pokemon act on instinct. They're moving before she can even say it out loud:[break][break]

"Protect Bulbasaur!"[break][break]

Fletchinder would be the first to get there, boosted by her tail wind from earlier. She swoops in with a flame charge, barely holstering her flames before attempting to lift the Bulbasaur into the air to avoid the rock slide. Of course, the attempt backfires slightly given the little green bulb Pokemon's unexpected heaviness. They both take the brunt of the damage, although Bulbasaur less so.[break][break]

Castform appears to be the only one unaffected, as the tail wind catches her too off-guard that she spins temporarily out of control. But in doing so, she avoids the rock slide. With a deep breath, the little sunny cloud plummets, attempting to headbutt the Chimchar back into place before falling into formation alongside the Fletchinder.[break][break]

Protect the Bulbasaur. Meanwhile, the green child sleeps soundly, only a few bumps and bruises blemishing her skin.

The headbutt to the chimchar has her giving a grunt, then wincing and preparing herself for another assault. She's ready to take control, and Sam's next command only bolsters her enthusiasm to battle.

"Fire and sand you two! Gastly you got the bulbasaur right where you want it."

With the bulbasaur already asleep, devouring the precious sleeping bulb's dreams wouldn't be hard. But gastly took its time, waiting and lurking, and didn't move until chimchar released a fire spin on the combined too, followed up by the larvitar's sandstorm. The combinations of the moves hopefully gave enough of an opening for his dream eater which was aimed right at the small bulbasaur.

Given their close quarters, it is no surprise that all three of them become caught up in the combination of fire spin and sandstorm. Both whirl around them, devouring the Fletchinder in both fire and brimstone, and the other two in just the effects of hot sand stinging sensitive skin.[break][break]

It disorients enough that the Bulbasaur is wide-open to the effects of the dream eater. She winces and groans, uncomfortable as a result of her private thoughts and lovely dreams being devoured whole and replaced with just emptiness.[break][break]

"Pull it together, everyone!"[break][break]

Fletchinder is the first to pull himself together, slicing through the storm with his razor wind. It aims for the Larvitar again, the powerful strikes of wind ignoring the sandstorm to hopefully strike true.[break][break]

Castform follows up with a weather ball aimed at the Larvitar as well, weather-boosted to become fire-type thanks to the sunny day. [break][break]

Unfortunately, Bulbasaur remains sleeping.

Both attacks pelted the larvitar, but Sam wasn't too worried. He had already held his own more than he originally assumed he would and because of that, he found himself excited to have his gastly and chimchar pick up the slack. Speaking of...

"Chimchar, charge the bulbasaur! Gastly, dark pulse!"

Because he knew his larvitar wouldn't have it in her to survive the wide range that dark pulse was going to give out, he returned her to her pokéball for some much needed rest.

Chimchar on the other hand surrounded her body in flame and with her body sprawled out, she rotated like a flaming wheel directly toward the bulbasaur-- even while it was being held, the fletchinder could be hit by the move as well for all she cared.

And gastly? He prepared himself to hit every single thing around him with a black energy that seeped from his own shadow and radiated out, blasting all of them at once. All but himself.

Flames eat up the ground and Bulbasaur is only just waking up when it begins to eat at her soft green flesh. With a yelp, the little lady is bumped aside where she is promptly returned to prevent further damage. The sandstorm rages on, making it difficult to navigate effectively.[break][break]

Fortunately, with the razor wind cutting through the storm, Fletchinder is able to locate the Gastly.[break][break]

Unfortunately, both Castform and Fletchinder are too close to escape the dark pulse the little ghost utilizes. It blasts everyone around it, dark tendrils cutting through pale sand. It is painful, but not so painful as humiliation.[break][break]

"Push!"[break][break]

Fletchinder, impressively, is the one doing the best given the circumstances. It would be this battle that indicates to Stormy that he would be a perfect opponent for Kazimir Wynter's Buzzwole in the upcoming days.[break][break]

"Castform, switch your attention to the Chimchar!"[break][break]

Like a deadweight piece of iron or something like in the Smash Bros games that Kirby does, Down B?, Castform aims to squash Chimchar with a headbutt. Fletchinder powers through with a flame charge, speed boosting even further than the tailwind. His flames burn hot, super-heating the sand he flies through.

And just like that, the defeat is swift.

He'd known it when he stepped out onto the field and accepted the triple battle. But damn, he hadn't expected to last so long. Between the previous beatings and the sandstorm raging, Sam's chimchar lost her consciousness just after the headbutt. And that flame charge was all that would be needed to send the gastly into a fainted status.

As they both passed out, Sam took in a deep breath and returned them both. Stormy was announced as the winner, and the weather began changing back to its original weather with the help of the staff.

As he crossed the way, he gave Stormy a polite smile.

"Congratulations." Extending a hand, he intends to shake her hands in a congratulatory manner. "Be honest with me, did you take it easy on me?"

When the dust settles, only Stormy's side of the battlefield remains. [break][break]

Fletchinder flies back to Stormy, settling on her shoulder with a sigh of relief. The little bird wilts slightly, evidently exhausted. The sandstorm settles and Castform's sunny-forme melts away(or it had earlier).[break][break]

The crowd inevitably disperses with the end of the battle, leaving the two to simply bask in the aftermath of their heated battle.[break][break]

"Of course not! What sort of figurehead would I be if I did that? You battled well!"[break][break]

She takes his hand and he would find her palm is unnaturally warm. Her handshake is firm and she meets his friendliness with a kind smile.

"Are you ill?"

It's a seemingly random question, but to show his thought process he's turning her hand over and feeling it with the palm of the hand that's not holding hers. Then her wrist, before a mildly worried and furrowed brow finds her face.

"You're body temperature is high. Are you experiencing a heat stroke?"

His own body temperature was raised because of the adrenaline of battle and the heat of the sun. But her temperature was even higher than his, enough for him to have noticed even amidst the heat. Thus, his concern.

He holds onto her hand, flipping it so that her palm faces up. Stormy blinks in surprise, stunned into an awkward silence as Sam gathers her hand in both of his, smoothing his own on top of her flat palm. The gesture is so familiar and intimate that she doesn't know how to respond, other than to open her mouth in shock and stare at him.[break][break]

"Uhh... nope! Not a heat stroke. Just a perk of being an avatar, I guess."[break][break]

Cue an awkward chuckle.

Sam furrows his brows in curious wonder.

"So even as an avatar it physically changes parts of you? That's interesting..."

He wondered if that's why kyle lopez seemed a bit feverish to the touch as well, now that he was thinking about it.

"Is it a burden, being an avatar? Or do you find you enjoy it?"

Now that he's not worried she's dying, or sick, he removes his hands from holding hers and simply gives her a polite smile. He doesn't even realize he's asking an invasive question, like, at all.
