matias doesn't cook. he hasn't cooked in years. but it doesn't stop him from offering, perhaps keen on the challenge, or perhaps on something else entirely. it's a thought he chooses not to entertain for now.

he steps out into the bedroom and walks out before she can protest, disappearing towards her kitchen.

Eva doesn’t cook either. It’s just something she never took the time to do. There are always more important things and delivery was so easy now-a-days. Every now and then she would whip up something but that was far and few between her bad takeout habit. She doesn’t protest, only spares a glance behind her as she slips on another large flannel, unbuttoned enough to not rub against her wound. She knows what he’ll find. It’s the thought that counts.

He honestly won’t find much to work with in the kitchen. It’s pretty bare bones, some beer, some water, some left over veggie pasta, a few random fruits and veggies. She’s not far behind him. She pops up onto the counter near the scattered bandaging supplies and begins to bandage her wound again, working from touch, “You don’t have to cook, we can always order something,” she offers without breaking her concentration.

[attr="class","matias"]he finds close to nothing in her kitchen — it's similar to what she'd find in his, and it's for that reason that he's neither surprised nor deterred. he simply closes the fridge, then turns to lean against the sink before watching her work.

"shame. i was looking forward to it."

chuckling, he pushes off, approaching her.

"probably for the best. i can't cook."

he's never had to.

"what are you feeling?"

The ease with which she works make it clear that she really could have bandaged up on her own the first time. Letting him help was a choice, the reason behind that was probably more subconscious than anything but still a choice, nonetheless. She doesn’t look up as he closes the fridge but cracks a smile when he admits he can’t cook, “Yeah, me neither,” she rips off tap, lining the edges of the gauze that is pressed to her chest, “Ohhh~ I don’t know,” she sighs, decisiveness when it comes to food as never been her strong point, “Something easy and quick is fine like . . . pizza or . . . I don’t know,” she glances up from her work to look at him, “What do you want?” Is he a picky eater? She realizes she doesn’t really know. She taps the counter, stirring awake the Rotom Phone, "Show Matias what we've got around here for delivery," she commands, sending the phone floating towards him with a list that hides her surprising number of missed messages. She'll get to those eventually.

it's then that he realizes he's never quite had to take another person's eating habits into consideration. it's always been him on his own, and even when he's not he's never wanted to try this much. his lips part to ask a question only to be silenced by the floating rotom phone.

his eyes glance over the options, skimming.

"pizza? burgers? chinese?"

it's the first three he sees. he taps on the last, then scrolls.

"tell me what you like, eva."

After running over the tape with a gentle finger, she’s satisfied with her work and fastens one more button to partially cover it. He doesn’t seem to want to make a decision either. They’re both navigating unknown waters.

Eva hops off the counter and slides over to stand beside him, peering up at the screen as he scrolls. She knows what’s around, she’s looked at the same list dozens of times. Still, it helps to have a reminder. She glances up at him momentarily when he demands, not questions, to know what she likes. It’s subtle, but she notices. It makes her grin.

Slender fingers tap the counter rhythmically while she thinks, “Well, I’m not a strict vegetarian but I do eat mostly plant based,” she purses her lips, explaining, “I just . . . really like vegetables I guess,” and it makes her a bit uneasy to eat something she treats and is meant to heal. She isn’t picky though, she can always find something she likes on a menu, “Tell me what you like, Matias.”

[attr="class","matias"]something plant based; that's a start, at least. he's already tapping back to the main menu when she demands the same of him. it makes him grin, too.

"i'm good with most things, really."

he taps into the first vegan place he finds; it's likely somewhere she's ordered from before. he hands the phone over to her, then turns to lean against the counter.

"but i like soup. we used to have it often, partly because it was so cheap."

“Soup, huh?” she takes the phone back and glances at the place he’s pulled up. Yes, she has ordered from here before, several times, “So do you like ramen?” she asks as her fingers tap against the screen quickly. She pulls up a ramen place she’s ordered from before. They have a delicious veggie ramen that they actually make spicy for her, they don’t just say they will and then don’t. They also make pretty good regular ramen, or so she’s told. She lets the phone float out of her hand to show him the menu, “So far, this place has been pretty good. It always gets delivered piping hot,” she’s already picked what she likes with “extra spicy” bolded in the comments.

he leans against her, peering down as her fingers tap quickly against the screen. it's apparent she's ordered from this place before; he trusts her enough to not second-guess.

"i trust you."

he raises a finger to the floating phone, scrolls through, and picks whatever one looks like their best seller. another tap, and their order's placed.

"but if it's bad, it's on you."

She laughs lightly, shooting him a grin as he picks out his order, “Well, I hope they don’t disappoint then,” she sighs, suddenly very self-conscious about the choice she’s made. The Rotom phone drifts back to her hand. She places it back on the counter upside down to keep it from bothering her. She knows it’s itching to. This particular Rotom hated having unread messages.

“If it’s bad, I’ll just have to make up for it somehow, I guess,” she teases with a smile. Their whiskey and water from earlier is still half finished on the counter. She grabs hers and moves towards the couch, expecting him to follow with a look back. She sinks into it, not realizing how tired her body feels until just now.

[attr="class","matias"]he doesn't miss how she seems to be ignoring her phone, perhaps in favor of his company. he's doing the same, too, as evident by the multitide of missed texts and calls on his phone. it remains in the pocket of his pants, lost somewhere in her house.

smiling at her tease, he reaches over for his discarded drink from earlier and follows her over to the couch. he also sinks into it, placing the glass on his thigh before leaning back, finding comfort with ease.

his head tilts over to the side, peering out to notice the dwindling sun. is it that late already?

"so that's why i'm staving."

She watches him settle on the couch, half expecting him to scoot closer, embrace her. When he doesn’t, she finds herself disappointed. Dangerous feelings. She sips her whiskey, letting the familiar burn wash them away. This didn’t mean anything, it couldn’t. She lies to herself to make it easier.

Her gaze follows his over to the window, she smirks, “Honestly, I thought it was later,” time must have moved slower for some reason. Eva half expected it to be pitch black outside. She curls her legs beneath her, settling into the corner and resting her drink on the armrest.

[attr="class","matias"]he loses himself in the view for moments, in how the orange of the sun reflects off the ocean, cascading across the horizon. even now, he can faintly hear the crashing of the waterfall.

it's peaceful, he decides.

"sort of lost track of time for a while."

he chuckles, then raises the glass to sip. it would've been ruined if not for the foresight to not throw ice in it. the realization has him smiling as he sets the glass down on the coffee table.

deciding only then, he moves closer to her, perhaps seeking a familiar warmth.
