"-and here's the goods," Zac said, dropping the crate onto the cooling sand. It was well past dark, and the Slateport police were busy with something on the other side of the city. A 'reputable source' had given them a 'hot tip', and had also 'bribed' them with 'a shitload of Charja-Cola Kyle Krush'. 

The redheaded giant pulled the cover off the crate, revealing a gunpowder cornucopia that stunk of well-spent childhood summers. "We've got poppers, snaps, parachutes, spindas, fountains, Kalos candles, Sevipers, and strobes," Zac said, pointing at each of brightly colored packets as he named them. "And this," he said, hefting the largest of the fireworks onto his shoulder like a bazooka, "is the GROUDON CANNON! Apparently it's what killed !"

A 'weapon of mass destruction' that had apparently been enough to kill . He'd read the tabloids, heard the rumors, but to know that somebody within the league thought the same thing made him wonder if it was all a hoax.

Ever the realistic pessimist.

"So," Sam began gathering up his fireworks as needed. Though most of the work was being done by his gardevoir with a gentle psychic. "The goal is to fire off as many of your fireworks as possible, right?"

He wondered if a single fire spin from his chimchar would do the trick-- but that felt a little bit like cheating...

"That's the core, yeah," Zac said, grabbing up some of the Kalos candles before Sam could take them all. "Two second cooldown between hits, if you're hit you're out, and if the police catch us we say these are from . Deal?"

Zac sprinted off into the darkness, Groudon Cannon on his shoulder and Sam's assumed agreement firmly fixed in his mind. Zappa's broad feet slapped the sand, and once they got to a safe distance he handed out the artillery. "Isaac, attack from above. Barker, lay down cover fire. Big Hanabero, you dual-wielding son of a Dodrio, you're the strike team. Get in there and cause some havoc. Zappa, you're with me!"

With their roles set, the group scattered. Barker's tongue flicked out, igniting a handful of fireworks and sending them soaring towards Sam's team. The exploding barrage lit the night and painted the beach in brilliant, multicolored sparks.

Sam's team, overall, was rather ... well, small. As in, short--save his gardevoir of course.

A chimchar which he used to light fireworks. Oh how precarious that must have looked, lighting fireworks with her butt-fire. All while conjuring up a fire spin and eyeing the gathering of fireworks that Sam had just finished placing.

Vulpix and gardevoir were on the defensive. As fireworks came flying toward them, gardevoir waved a hand toward them and stopped them all mid-air, using psychic energy to control them.

A gust of cold wind, due to vulpix' blizzard, causing most of the fireworks to either stop short, or fly back toward Zac and his pokémon.

Now, the sneaky one that everybody had to watch out for was Sam's toxel. That little thing was real good at sneaking around the sand and around the opposing side nuzzle against other pokémon, creating enough light for gardevoir or vulpix to send out an attack and knock them down.

Big Habanero was a seasoned battler. He was used to fighting fire with flying. Granted, maybe he wasn't used to fighting with fireworks, but with all the fire flying around it was basically the same thing. 

HMMMMMMK! River said, his war cry muffled by the huge candle in his mouth. Beside him, his twin brother Mario nodded bobble-headedly in agreement. The wicks of the fireworks fizzed in their beaks, shortening by the second. In moments the attack would begin.

Like feathered assassins, they approached Sam's team, only to be repelled by a blast of Icy Wind that put out their fireworks! River started to sweat. This was bad. Bad bad bad. They needed to find a way to relight their weapons or else they were just sitting Duckletts!

Overhead, Isaac the Aerodactyl beat the smoky air with his ancient wings. Zac had managed to take fireworks all along the creature's wings, and he bit at one of the packs with a Fire Fang, unleashing a salvo of fireworks on Sam's team from above. They whizzed and spiraled, breaking off into little, fizzing lines of gold and purple.

The fireworks from above caught Sam off guard. He quickly threw his hands up, trying to block it, but found that his gardevoir was quick to move in front of him.

Sam's eyes, laced with confusion, settled on his gardevoir in panic.

"Gardevoir, you'll..."

Her eyes showed she was at peace with her decision. As the fireworks rained down on her, blocking Sam, she could slowly feel her health bar depleting. Each hit, more hit points were dropped. The yellow, then the red. That throbbing of a dinging noise radiating in her head before finally, she found the firework show over and her body falling limp onto the sand.

GARDEVOIR has FAINTED

Sam gripped the fireworks in his hands and looked to his chimchar, who made a face at him curiously, eyes brimming with tears at her fallen comrade.

Admittedly, Gardevoir was a bit squishy anyway. A direct attack like that? She didn't stand a chance. But chimchar? The little spitfire was taking the firework sort of bomber jacket that Sam offered and quickly bouncing off of various pokémon using her acrobatics. She held in her grasp bundles of fireworks fixed onto a vest, taking them over toward their spy of a toxel. Once with the toxel, she placed the kamikaze jacket on the toxel and gave a solemn nod.

Toxel couldn't care less about the game or the fallen comrade, but Sam promised poffins so she found it in herself to actually take the vest of death and started to waddle her way toward the big guy, Zac himself.

Facing off against the two headed bird with no fireworks lit, vulpix smirked as if to say, 'Gotcha bitches.' A twist of reality around them, along with the help of some psychic energy, an extrasensory was given. Her hope was to make them flinch, keep them stalled.

Because Sam seemed to be working on placing hidden fireworks within the sand.

Big Habanero flinched as Vulpix's mental assault prodded at old wounds in their psyche. Mario, especially, as he had suffered the full extent of 's Skitty's power during their Dream Battle. 

The pair pulled back, unsure of their next move. Facing down a furious fox in the dark without any firepower was a nightmare for most birds. Where was their backup? Where was Isaac?


Isaac bit at his other wing, igniting the fireworks and unleashing another salvo, this time a sputtering shower of two-stage blues and green-yellow poppers with delayed fuses. They lit up Sam's side of the beach in ocean tones.

He controlled the skies, alone and unchallenged. Millions of years of evolution and he was still the dominant aerial force. If only there were someone who could face up against his unparalleled-

The whirling twister of bloody gold light streaked up from the sands, bursting against Aerodactyl's russet skin.

Isaac's screeched his defeat. It was an avalanche of pain and frustration, it was the rumble of falling stone, and the quick-cut shout of a life cut short.

Dim sparks fell from his scorched hide, tumbling like heart's blood through the salty air, only to be extinguished in the cold, lonely sand. The dimming ash lit a dull runway for Isaac's final landing.

Isaac wings gave out. They crumpling like paper, and he tumbled downward into the waiting earth, carving himself a shallow grave in the wet sand. Seawater fill the crater around Aerodactyl's fallen body, as his wing fizzled out. The crooked membranes would forever carry the un-lit fireworks. Soaked and abandoned, liked dreams in the waves.




Big Habanero heard the cry from Isaac. He felt the shudder run through the sand, and he watched a single, jittering firework, (Isaac's soul?) Streak across the battlefield towards Sam's team. The shot had gone wide. An imperfect final act. A single blemish on the record of such a perfect, rocky angel.

Doduo saw their chance. They turned, frantic footfalls carving up the sand as they hurtled away from the cold winds of the fight. PLAP PLAP PLAP! With a deep, muffled honk Big Habanero sprang from the sand with vigor, powerful legs propelling them up towards the stars, and into the path of Isaac's final spark!

Isaac's shot streaked past, igniting the dull candles of River and Mario. The twins landed, wicks lit, and pelted back towards Sam, beaks blazing.

"They're on the offensive! Toxel! Engage!"

Sam called, quickly avoiding the attack for himself and encouraging chimchar to do the same. Her little body bounced and danced amidst the fireworks. She felt so alive. As she landed beside Sam, they both took a moment to close their eyes, a moment of respect for toxel.

Why? Because the kamikaze baby pokémon was on her way in a rolling fashion through the sand and headed straight for that big huge durant-eater of a pokémon. The biggest one had to go, and as she rolled toward him she hit a bump and flew into the air. Her limbs flew out to make her look a bit like a diaper wearing starfish.

As she collided with the big guy, she rubbed her cheek in a nuzzle against it. Along with the evilest of chuckles. Because that electricity was the trigger that her kamikaze vest of fireworks needed.

The explosion was intense. Unreal. Firecrackers, bottle rockets, the whole nine yards! An array of colors exploded on the face of that durant-eater without a second thought.

Or else, that's what she'd been aiming to do-- roll permitted, it wouldn't be in vain.


And while all of that mess was being taken care of, the vulpix that had given a mental shock to the dual headed bird bounced around in an attempt to avoid the fireworks.

A beautiful twist.

Then a gorgeous flip.

Lastly, he landed in the utmost of elegance atop a rather heft bit of fireworks and the grin he gave was so cocky and evil it dared the dual headed bird to come at him.

As he awaited the bird's next move, he shifted his posture. If he managed to hit just right, then he could blow that fucking bird sky high next opportunity.

Zac shed a single tear as Barker was absolutely obliterated by Sam's child soldier. But in a way, it was what the 4th of July was truly about. 

"There's another star in the sky tonight," Zac said solemnly. He looked up at the sky, temporarily blind from the simply ludicrous amount of fireworks that just vaporized his Pokemon. It was also very likely that Barker was paralyzed right before he died.

Meanwhile, Big Habanero struck forward at the Vulpix. His heads worked in tandem, shooting back and forth like the beaked fists of a professional boxer. Left, right, left, right, red, blue, yellow, silver, again and again sending jabs of fire at the enemy. HOOOOOOOONK!!

It was a rookie mistake, but could he be blamed?

Vulpix had been on top, ready to take out this damned bird no matter what! But then he'd gotten distracted by the light show. His eyes softened, pupils reflecting each blast like glossy mirrors.

By the time he realized that the bird was attacking him, and with fireworks, his weakness no doubt, he was already feeling faint. With one final coo, he looked to Sam and his chimchar, brow furrowed, apology in his eyes. Then, finally, his body fell limp on the sand.

Sam's eyes were wide with terror. Was he really about to lose a fireworks battle?!

Not if chimchar could help it! She gave a wild amazon call, flipping in the air with a FLAME WHEEL and twisting her body and taking off along the beach. The way her burning flame wheel caused the sand to come up looked like a firework all it's own. But this, this was the grand slam, the finale.

Her body began lighting fireworks, first the preliminary round that Sam had set up. If she survived long enough, she could set off the second volley.

Big Habanero leapt over Chimchar's first volley. They vaulted the fireworks like an Olympic runner vaults a flaming, high-velocity hurdles. They didn't know, birds don't watch sports. "Woo!" Zac called, cheering on his team and waving sparklers from far enough away that he still felt safe. 



And there would be no chance for a second volley. Not if Zappa had anything to say about it. "Now!" Zac called, and the lizard popped out of his hiding place in the sand. He opened his frill, projecting a gleaming LIGHT SCREEN right in front of Chimchar, reflecting the blinding glare of the fireworks and its own flames right back at it. At the same time, the lizard spat a lit row of whirling crackers. Dance monkey dance!

The moment she was blinded by that LIGHT SCREEN, the chimchar found herself derailed. Her aim was off, her body twisted, and suddenly she was flipping and flopping in the sand until she hit a hump, flew into the air, and--

"ZAC DUCK!"

Sam called out, ducking behind one of the rocks along the beach and covering his head.

The chimchar had landed right into a box of fireworks. Seemed the finale was going to go off even as the chimchar landed within the box. Good thing they were all the ones that either shot out toward the pokémon or up into the sky.

As they exploded, Sam watched for a moment. The shapes of their pokémon lit up the sky. Along with some favorite name-brand sodas, and some cute little Mt. Pyre designs Sam has been working on for merch. This whole battle is sponsored by Charja-Cola and Mt. Pyre -- charge up so you don't end up dead! Or something...

After a few minutes he was collecting his pokémon and heading over to Zac with a smile. He held out his hand, a congratulations was in order.

"Congratulations on your win. That was one of the better battle's I've had today."

What a way to end the night. All he needed now was something to drink.

CHIMCHAR has FAINTED!

"They're not ducks, they're a Dod-" Zac never got to finish the thought, as a final burst of fireworks painted the sky behind him with charming designs, and workshopped slogans. "You should have gone with 'The taste is to die for'," Zac suggested. "Or '6-feet of flavor!'. Actually that doesn't make any sense."

Zac juggled the Groudon Cannon as he went to shake Sam's hand. "Yeah, uh, great match," he said, shifting the huge weapon from shoulder, to armpit, then back to his shoulder. "We should do this again-" Zac dropped the cannon, and the last remnants of Chimchar's fire lit the wick.

WHOOOOOOSH!...........

KRA-KOOOM!



Zac stared, open-mouthed, as the fireworks broke over the bay. They went on for a good few minutes, turning the sky crimson, disrupting air traffic, and no doubt scaring the shit out of some local Wingull. 

As the insanity wore itself out, Zac turned to Sam. "I've got it. Our slogan. 'Bailey Cooper approved.'"

"It made sense to me. But perhaps, reword it?" Sam cleared his throat.

"The taste is so bold you could cherish it six feet under."



But his wit was completely forgotten when he saw how Zac could handle a cannon. He watched the display, a smile forming. It's a big deal Zac, I mean he's only smiled like four times so far out of all fifty-thousand threads he's in.

"I like it... but how do you mean, 'our' slogan?"

"Oooo, that's a good one!" Zac said, slapping his knee. He pulled two ice-cold Charja-Colas from his Rotom Fridge, tossing one to Sam and pressing the other against his sweaty neck. "I figure it's a no brainer! Charja-Cola and Mt. Pyre. A match made in heaven! Or hell. I don't judge. Either way we'd be crazy not to partner up!" 

Zac's logic was foolproof. After all, they were already bursting with slogans. Just like Charja-Cola is bursting with refreshing flavor! "The only thing is that we need some sort of signature ingredient for our new flavor. Passho Plus+ has, well, Passho berries. After Dark has Alolan dark rum. Kyle Krush has coconut and dog hair. We need a little something special. Got any ideas?"
