Rhyhorn got her fill and slumped on the table, belching loudly. Bo held up a pokeball and returned her, as attempting to lift her off the table would be a useful effort.

Bo’s Pidgey was next. Maybe not the greatest for such a competition, but it was ready.

“You can do it, Pidgey!”

It chirped and pecked at the fruit flesh, not nearly as efficient as Tyranitar’s whole-melon insertion technique.

Pidgey didn't seem very hungry, so Zac let out a sigh of relief. "Looks like we've got this one in the bag, guys," he said, seriously overoptimistic about their chances. "Nyx, you're up mate!"

Hypno looked down upon his watermelon and started to swing his metronome. "No mate, you can just eat it-" Zac started to say, before he was drowned out by the sudden droning of a thousand tiny insects. Nyx's visage became blurry, as if the fuzzy creature's shape was instead the product of a dense swarm of crawling locusts. 

Before Nyx could consume the whole venue, Kingler Mega Evolved, pulling great chunks out of the swarm as he sought to disrupt the vicious Bug Bite of the Nyx Locust.

Pidgey got its fill and unexpectedly toppled over, FAINTED from too much watermelon—even though it had only taken a few bites.

Alarmed, Bo went to scoop it up off the ground. “Anyone got a revive?”

One was thrown from somewhere behind the judge’s table. Apparently they’d been prepared for this. Bo caught it, and went to work administering.

But the team kept eating.

“We got this guys!”

Binacle was next. Its face hands chopped at the melon wildly, tossing bits of it messily and frantically gobbling what remained in front of it.

Zac's team rallied weakly, as they rounded on the swarming Hypno. Blastoise was still recovering from the watermelon,. and watched the battle from a distance. Bulu mooed, annoyed by the sound of the thousands of insects. Pale, milky rain began to fall along the beach. One of the referees stared at the battle, wide-eyed.

Focus Zac, we're almost there! Zac said, forcing his eyes down to the whole watermelon in front of him. He picked it up with both hands, and brought it down on the table, smashing it like a precious geode to reveal the bounty inside.

"Woooo!" Zac shouted, grabbing a large chunk and stuffing it into his mouth. "Now that's the taste of Summer!"

Bo eyed the Hypno nervously just as the Pidgey was revived in the palms of his hands. The pink psychic-type was unpredictable, as Zac had said before. Even idea of participating in a watermelon eating competition with it seemed a little sketchy.

Actually, being in the vicinity of it at all at this point was perhaps reason for discomfort.

He watched, waiting to see if it would hold it down before the win was announced. It seemed that they had lost, either way.

“Woo!”

Bo stuffed a piece of watermelon into his gob happily anyways. Binacle's claws fell face-first onto the table in defeat, tapping out. Everyone waited to see how everyone else fared in the final moments, while judges tallied scores.

As the judges called the end of the match, and Zac quickly excused himself to go and be noisily sick behind the tents. Summer didn't taste quite so good on the way back up.

He arrived, barely late for the final tally, and just in time for his disqualification. 
"-Ramsay has been unfortunately eliminated due to unlicensed Mega Evolution in a public venue-"
"What?" Zac asked, standing up too fast. He sat back down, head spinning a little. "I didn't- oh yeah actually. Yeah that's right. Sorry judge, carry on."
"Which means that is the winner! With 178 points!"

Zac clapped fervently as his friend was called up on stage to receive his medal and complementary watermelons. "Let's go Bo!" he shouted.

Bo watched with raised brow and concern as the gym leader went around the tent. Too much fun. Too much melon. Uh-oh.

His jaw hung open a little at the judge’s disqualification. “What—no, it’s fine—”

But he was silenced, and the winnings were offered to him anyways. He raised the fists of his nearest eaters and they basked in the praise and the awful feelings in their stomachs.

He grinned, then, receiving the medal around his neck, and holding the two melons up for the cameras to capture his moment of summery triumph.

In the end, he’d go to check on Zac.

“Hey, that disqualification stuff was bullshit, but whatever man.” He narrowed eyes mischievously and then held one out. “Want a melon?”
