THE MOMENT NATU’S HEAD MAKES CONTACT AGAINST SCEPTILE A DISTORTION FIZZLES. A blur of black is what actual rams against the Pokemon’s scales but so much as a blink will have them miss the sudden change. Was it a part of the FEINT ATTACK? Possibly.

But the lingering static reveals something above the Natu. It’s form is lithe and covered in fur. It’s only a split second reveal, returning to normal as the Natu leaps, swiping its beak horizontally with a NIGHT SLASH.

In the crackling light of Yucca's punch, Zac missed the distortion, but the predator's gaze of his Sceptile didn't. As Natu slashed with its dark beak, Yucca brought up her arm to parry. The attack slashed against her husky scales, slicing, but not deeply.

Yucca's tongue flicked the air, tasting her prey on the wind. It didn't smell right. There was no dust, cloud, or bugs smell, like she should DETECT from a flier. Instead this bird was all musk and fur. A ground walker.

Yucca made a deep, crackling sound in her throat. A pensive sound, like a crow on a wire when its thinking...thinking. Her eyes gleamed as some ancient, seventh sense told her that this thing was not a bird.

Yucca used DETECT to block the attack and to see through the illusion

THE SCEPTILE BLOCKS A BEAK BUT IT FEELS LIKE ANYTHING BUT. Instead of a singular, narrow protrusion, it’ll feel like several are raking against its scales. Blocking proves the optimal choice. A comb of scratching sensations serve as the final clue before the DETECT all but confirms the truth.

The ILLUSION still holds strong. Until it’s forcibly broken, at a visual level, the Natu serves as as the avatar of choice. But now that Sceptile has a general idea of the Pokemon’s true form, being able to battle against it proves much easier. It’s only the eyes that remain deceiving.

The tiny bird suddenly leaps back a much larger distance than it should be able to. From this distance, it opens its beak, expelling a burst of BURNING JEALOUSY at the Sceptile.

Flames roared towards Sceptile, melting sand and roasting the air until it sizzles like a can of cola left out on the pavement.

Zac chuckled.

"Ha. I knew you'd have some tricky, buggery stuff up ya bloody sleeve Fernando, so I prepared a trap of my own!" Zac pushed up his Kyle Krush branded sunglasses. The lenses caught the light of the approaching flames, gleaming with revealed intelligence.

Zac when he sees an new biome

"You see, it was always my intention to come up against a fire attack. It was predictable. Damn near bloody inevitable. So I equipped little Yucca here with a contingency. A Z-Move that makes her impervious to fire. They say the best offense is a strong defense, but I believe the best offense is to know what your opponent is going to do long before they do."

Zac touched the Mega Stone that had been built into his glasses, and Sceptile glowed with furious light. The sunlight overhead tightening, as if the gaze of the sun were narrowing on a single point. A blazing corona built around the reptile, growing in intensity until the light itself shattered, revealing the Mega Sceptile that had formed within. "Ha. Fernando this battle was over before it even began. YUCCA! SHOW 'EM YA BASKILIS-" Zac had taken so long monologuing that even the conveniently slowed flames had been able to cross the two feet of sand between Natu and Yucca. The Burning Jealousy hit Yucca, feeding off Zac's increased intellect and roasting the reptile.

SCEPTILE FAINTED.

WHAT HE SAYS HOLDS FERNANDO’S INTEREST BUT IT TAPERS WITH TIME. The world around them doesn’t freeze just because they become saturated with words. In fact, it seems dead set on continuing without them. Flame grow hungry with impatience, cutting their battle before the other can reveal their plan.

And, in his defense, such a grandeur speech leaves Fernando wishing they could have retracted the attack just to see what he had in store.

But the battle comes to end with his Sceptile fainted. With that, Fernando stares blankly at Zac, surprised that their contest ends with such an anti-climatic cliff hanger. His Natu also refrains from moving, flabbergasted.

It is Tapu Fini who joins in as the three stooges stare at Zac expectantly.

Maybe next time.
