Hideo sat in a dingy white plastic chair, waiting for everyone else to show up. He'd managed to be the first one here, so it was just a matter of waiting for his opponents and his tag partner to show up. Beside him sat his shiny Gardevoir - the Pokemon he'd chosen for this tag battle - who'd claimed another dingy white plastic chair for herself, slumped in her seat while she waited to do something.

Hideo heard each person arrive, though relied on his Gardevoir's Telepathy to tell who he'd battle and who he'd work with. She was limited to telling him who she recognized and who she didn't know, but it would work for him. Two times, he heard someone enter the arena and was met with a sense of indifference.

But the third one? Of course his Gardevoir recognized Andy immediately, seeing as they'd met earlier at the Pokemon Center. That sudden sense of familiarity hit Hideo, and he knew it was time.

"And here I thought we were gonna battle each other," Hideo laughed, standing up and making his way to his side of the arena, "But this works too! Ain't even the first time we've worked together."

Every other time had been against wild Pokemon, but he had a pretty good feel for how Andy did things. And he was confident Andy knew the same about him by now.

Surely it wasn't that bad, but the Galarian would have risked sand in his butt crack before he had planted himself in that chair. A judgmental glance was cast at the gardevoir. Wasn't it supposed to dissuade their blind trainer from such poor decisions?

While he certainly possessed the ability, he couldn't spew banter all day. They had a fight to win. ''Anyway, lets get this party started.'' Chocolate eyes narrowed with determination as he turned towards their opponents. ''Let's rock, Taph.'' With a smokey shimmer, the gengar appeared from the folds of his clothes.

Hideo smirked. “Maybe someday we’ll get that match,” he said, guided to his spot in the arena, “Even if it isn’t today.” They didn’t need something fancy like a tournament guiding them into a battle; they could just battle in an arena any day they were open. “Helps to get practice doing tag battles too! Champions gotta work with a lot of people, after all.”

As for his chair source?

He just shrugged. “Just the chair they had here,” he said, “I’m not picky about my seats. Better than just sitting on the ground.” It felt fine to him, and his Gardevoir didn’t object to it at all. And he didn’t plan to get picky about his seats once he was Champion.

But this wasn’t the time to mull over seating arrangements; they had a battle to win. “Good to hear you’re bringing Taph for this,” Hideo said, “Dancer’s telling me our opponents are pretty big, so we gotta go big too.”

Their opponents had already let their Pokemon out. Dancer was able to recognize one - a Samurott - since Hideo had one of his own. The other one, a Manectric, she didn’t recognize, but it was a fairly large Pokemon.

With everyone in their positions, it was just a matter of waiting for the judge to announce their match start.

“Ready-”

Dancer was already getting ready; without waiting for an order, her shadow was already touching the shade, so it was easy to sneak it around.

“-Set-”

It got nice and close.

“-Go!”

Just as the Samurott’s trainer ordered it to blast her with water, Dancer’s shadow extended towards it - her Shadow Sneak striking it and knocking the aim of its Hydro Pump off.

Hideo assumed Epitaph had done that, and was just about to order Dancer to attack - until she informed him she already did. It left the boy confused for a moment, his mouth slightly open.

''I've kept him back for much of this,'' he answered in response to Epitaph's presence. ''It's given me mixed results, so I letting him stretch his stubby legs this time.'' As the announcer prepped them for their combat, Andy and his gengar both noted the shadow under the gardevoir. A ghost type move, shadow strike was well known to them.

The Galarian couldn't help but feel responsible for the other boy's choice, just was he would have seen John Sullivan's influence had Hideo been using bug type moves. It was a dirty trick on the gardevoir's part, but such was the nature of many ghost types and their moves. Darkness ebbed and swirled around the gengar as well as 'go' came close to being spoken.

''Shadow ball, Taph!'' Bringing his tri-fignered hands up, the dark orb swirled into existence between them from his ghostly aura. The manectric was crackling and sparking with a thunder fang when the shadow ball barreled into it. The electric pokemon was quick, but the gengar was just a little bit faster in this instance.

Staggered, the manectric shook his head as if it could shake off the damage and glanced back with rage before blasting off with his own attack. Electricity flashed across the soaked sand to stab at the gengar, sparks dancing around the ghost pokemon before flickering out of existence into his shadows. A clear wince painted Epitaph's face but Andy knew it wasn't without purpose.

It wasn't as if Hideo was shocked that Dancer used that attack - he was planning to order her to use it. The confusion lied with her using it before he said so. Even Elga, his only other Pokemon with Telepathy, waited until he ordered an attack before acting.

Did she staight-up read his mind, or was that something she independently chose to do?

But as Andy said, he didn't have the time to get distracted. They had a battle to win. "Right, sorry," Hideo quickly said, reorienting himself.

As he Gardevoir informed him, the opposing Samurott was preparing another Hydro Pump, this time standing further away from the shade. No sneak attack this time.

Once he heard the water spew out, Hideo made the order. "Teleport away!" he said, and his Gardevoir obeyed, disappearing just as the Hydro Pump was about to hit her.

But Hideo hadn't specified where she should teleport to, do she made the choice herself, appearing right next to the Samurott. Hideo was only aware the moment she rematerialized. "Get'em, Dancer!" he shouted.

She got nice and close, the Samurott only aware of her presence the moment its trainer told it - but by then, she'd already planted a Draining Kiss on its side, the bright-pink energy flowing towards her.

This kiss wouldn't last long, though; the Samurott's tail was surrounded by a spiral of water, and a single swipe of its Aqua Tail was enough to dislodge Dancer, sending her back.

Dancer landed on her feet, brushing her mouth with an arm, grinning at her target.

While little more than a glance could be spared, least he not be following his own advice, he noted that his partner's pokemon seemed more aggressive than his own, a notion that seemed counter intuitive. Briefly his mind recalled all the times he had been concerned about the boy's lycanroc. Perhaps Hideo's pokemon picked up something he just didn't see from his trainer.

Meanwhile, the manectric sparked for another thunder fang. As the static quickly reached its zenith, the pokemon seemed confused when it quickly died away and nothing happened soon after. Epitaph's cursed body had done its job. His grin only widened, as did his trainer's. The damage suffered hadn't been for nothing.

''Looks like it's tired, Taph. Let him have a nap.'' The gengar's eyes flashed a dazzling array of colors as it cast hypnosis on the sparky canine. Its eyes grew heavy under the effects of spell, and it soon drifted off to sleep. Not that such slumber would last if its opponents had anything to say about it. It was time for recompense.

''Enjoy his nightmares.'' Floating across the ground, the gengar pursed his lips and a violet aura surrounded the slumbering manectric. Dream eater seemed to mystify its subconscious machinations and allowed them be inhaled by the ghost type, nurturing the damage caused by the previous hit.

Where Andy may have seen overly-aggressive behavior, Hideo was seeing proactivity. It was a battle, after all, and Hideo knew her abilities favored a more aggressive approach in battle compared to his Beheeyem. And to be fair, he did give her a lot of room to interpret his orders. He trusted her to be able to act on her own - how could she help him if she only ever did what he told her to?

Though Hideo could guess what Andy had Taph do, Dancer confirmed it; the other opposing Pokemon was put to sleep, and was having its dreams eaten. The thought popped in Hideo’s head: why not do the same to the Samurott? Disabling both opponents like that was an easy path to victory.

And he could hear the opposing trainers trying to get the Samurott to save them, so he thought to get on it right away. “You too, Dancer!” Hideo shouted, “They can take a nap too!”

Just as the Gengar did, the Gardevoir sent out colorful rings of light at the Samurott. Though the Samurott tried to fight it off long enough to save its partner, it wasn’t fast enough, its eyes growing heavy as the accumulated water in its mouth spilled out, until it was fast asleep standing up.

Not the most exciting way to take control of a battle, but hey, if it worked, it worked.

With that done, Dancer approached the Samurott, kneeling besides it and patting it on the head. Bright purple energy began to flow from the Samurott to her, her Dream Eater draining its energy, all while she had a small smile on her face.

“Kinda weird she knows that, huh?” Hideo asked aloud, grinning. “She knew that stuff ever since I got her. Wouldn’t expect it from a Kirlia, and I didn’t realize it ‘till she was eating a nightmare I had.”

''A nightmare? Been a while since I had one of those.'' Of course having always had Epitaph around, they were being consumed. Ghost types could demand much from humans, even if just by their presence. Either unknown to him or unbothered by it, Andy didn't connect the two together as to why he was so thin and frail.

''Anyway, Taph give him the old coup de grace.'' The trainer across from him looked worried with the Galarian's wordage, even if it was forbidden to actually kill a pokemon in a tournament such as this. The gengar knew what his own trainer meant however, using hex on the sleeping manectric.

Afflicted as it was, the attack was twice as powerful as it might be otherwise. Already savaged by his the earlier attack, the pokemon fainted, beaming back to his mortified trainer's pokeball. It was a simple strategy, but likely not one that would have worked on anyone else he faced in this tournament. Planning rarely seemed to work out in his favor.

“Really?” For a moment, Hideo thought Andy was either messing with him or was extremely lucky, until his Gardevoir Telepathically made the connection for him; of course he wouldn’t have nightmares with a nightmare-eating Gengar around. Especially one so close to him. “Well, I can’t even remember what the nightmare I had was. I felt kinda tired after it happened though. And not like ‘sleepy’ tired, like ‘I don’t have the energy’ tired.”

Did he really have to describe it? Andy probably dealt with the same more than once.

Regardless, it seemed Taph hit his opponent pretty hard - enough that he was already knocked out. “Nice one!” Hideo said, shooting Andy a thumbs-up. Now all that was left was for Dancer to produce similar results. However, she seemed content on lounging around, gradually draining more of the Samurott’s energy with her Dream Eater.

Unfortunately, sloth proved to be her mistake; the Samurott’s trainer’s shouts got through to it, and Dancer was struck back by another Aqua Tail. The Samurott looked tired, but it wasn’t out of the fight yet.

''You need to drink more tea, mate.'' The Galarian found the drink energizing enough to fight off the lack of energy. It was definitely relatable. Often did he feel drained, so long in fact that he took it to be his default state. His youth sustained him however, that and copious amounts of sugar filled treats. There were more pressing concerns than his frail body however.

Underhanded as he was, was it uncouth for him to team up on the remaining pokemon? It looked as if Hideo had the situation well in toe before his opponent woke up and slapped the gardevoir. While he was unsure what the blind boy's pokemon had in its repertoire, he didn't want to steal his friend's thunder. So something more supportive was needed.

''Taph, show him what it's like to actually be toxic.'' Floating closer, the gengar's mouth parted to blast the samurott with a poisoned mist. The distance was measured to keep Hideo's own pokemon out of the cloud. Epitaph was that experienced, especially given that he typically fought in tandem. Problems in Hoenn were rarely a one pokemon job.

“I don’t really like caffeine,” Hideo said, shrugging. “I don’t like that kind of bitter. All the teas I drink are decaf or herbal.” It was part of why he completely avoided coffee; no amount of sugar or cream was enough to get rid of that bitter undercurrent. “Not like she does it to me all that often anyways.”

And if she did - kind of like it sounded like Taph did to Andy - he’d probably want something other than caffeine to deal with it.

His Gardevoir furrowed her brow, annoyed. Her opponent didn’t have the decency to just lie there and get knocked out...it was time to bring out the big guns. She Telepathically urged Hideo on, to let her go full power. “O-oh, you sure?” the boy asked, only to receive another insistence. “Alright...”

Hideo took the mega bracelet out of his pocket, placing it on his arm. In short order, light flew from the bracelet over to the Gardevoir, enveloping her in light. Once the light went away, it was clear to everyone (that could see) that she had mega evolved; there were two horns(?) sticking from her chest when there was just one, and the fabric-like skin covering her legs now presented like a ballroom dress.

And all the white of her body had turned black.

She knew to keep herself outside of that toxic gas, instead extending her shadow towards the Samurott once again, striking at it again with another Shadow Sneak.

''And the herbal tea don't help?'' There was an obvious air of incredulity in the question. Tea was the lifeblood of Galarians, well any proper Galarian. The thought that the concoction did nothing for Hideo was worrisome and while he wouldn't say it out loud... frustrating. Was there something wrong with the people of Hoenn?

They all live off of sunshine or some shit, he thought bitterly to himself. Andy almost responded to Hideo's question if he was sure about what when he noted the bracelet, and while his own megastone was far more gaudy, the function was no less the same. Knowing what was coming, he wondered why it was necessary to mega evolve on the samurott.

''It's not taking the piss out of you that much is it?'' Both he and his gengar drank in the impressive sight. While he had seen other megaed pokemon before, none had been a garevoir, and it cut a threatening visage, like a vengeful widow. After the awe of the experience, he wondered when his friend had picked up his mega stone...

Hideo shrugged. “I mean it helps a little. I just take a nap if I’m that kind of tired. It more than makes up for it.” Plus, he didn’t want to end up a caffeine-addict like his eldest brother; he understood that these days, Rangers were running themselves bare, but one of the few things he didn’t like about the days his brother could come home was the scent of coffee dominating the morning.

The Samurott tried to struggle its way out of its predicament, but the Toxic fog made it hard to orient itself, and the Gardevoir took full advantage of the situation and her burst of power by striking at the Samurott from all directions with her Shadow Sneak. The Samurott did try to Hydro Pump wildly in a chance to hit something, but Dancer was sure to keep it off-target; not a single blast would be pointed near her or Taph.

“She doesn’t eat my dreams every night. I don’t have nightmares a lot, and I don’t have her in my room every night either.” He had to rotate which Pokemon could stay with him overnight - there was only so much space in his room for them to share. Maybe that would change later…

“So nah, still got plenty of piss in me.” He said that before thinking it through, not realizing how silly that sounded.

Probably helped that he could hear the Samurott fall down, defeated by the combination of poison and shadows, closely followed by the sound of a Pokeball drawing its Pokemon back in.
