That is, of course, until Tapu Fini shows up.

If we’re talking about interesting twists, that sure is one!

Still, he does no more than ever so slightly raise an eyebrow, holding the legendary’s gaze as it stares directly at him.. ”Cool.” The word comes with nonchalance. For, even though all the monsters and horrors Mars has had to face throughout his life have been of the human kind, his time spent with them has taught him a valuable lesson: how not to flinch or falter when staring down someone that could easily end his life. He may be a narcissist, but he’s not one of the delusional kind.

He hadn’t come to the beach with the intention of trying to beat up legendaries, but if that’s what he had to do, then he would do it alright.
[break][break]
”Terpsichore.” Unlike her trainer, the Sharpedo does have some delusions, and it is fearlessly and aggressively that she charges towards the legendary, only her dorsal fin being visible above the surface. When close, her jaws open, attempting to use a POISON FANG.

On the bright side, the Blastoise is slightly smarter about things. Using IRON DEFENSE and waiting patiently.

Nature’s Madness is, to no exaggeration, devastating in power.

The water swirls and waves rise, crashing against each other as if a storm has suddenly risen from what little depth there is this close to the shallows. Tapu Fini’s influence over the ocean current is unquestionable, and its effect inescapable. The Blastoise’s Iron Defense does nothing to protect her from the attack, and the Sharpedo, who was right next to the legendary a second ago, is thrown backwards by the impact.

Mars watches, silently, his gaze fixed on both the waters and the legendary, and although it is faint from behind sunglasses, there is a spark of admiration shimmering beneath perfect composure. How could there not be, when witnessing such a display of power? Even if such a display of power came from an opponent.

”Ah, I bet some people must find that soul crushing, huh? Can’t say I blame them,” he laughs lightly, as if he finds this entertaining. And honestly, he does, even if he’s aware of how small the chances are that his pokémon will come out victorious in this fight. That part annoys him, but for now, he chooses to ignore it. ”Switch.”

This time, the Sharpedo charges towards the Marill, ready to THRASH the Aqua Mouse Pokémon. While, from where she is, the solemn Blastoise watches Tapu Fini, aiming a FLASH CANNON in her direction.

How to put this kindly…

Mr. Silph’s social skills really could use some honing, huh? Who knows, maybe he’s just the kind of person who only feels chatty under certain circumstances and with certain people, but to someone like Mars, that’s just weird.

Still, he smiles. ”Oh, I can imagine as much. Although that just makes me curious as to what you think it says about me.” Things like those are always fun, but the words come easily and casually – both his tone and expression lacking any signs of pressuring for an answer. He would like one, sure, but Fernando doesn’t really seem like he is here to talk…

He sure is here to try to kick some ass though.

Superpower is a good idea, since the moment the Sharpedo begins THRASHING it becomes obvious that she won’t stop at just one strike. The attack hits at full force and startles the already injured pokémon, yet still, she continues onwards, willing to fight until the last speck of health leaves her body and she faints on the spot. How long will that take? Who knows, it’s not like we have health bars here...

The Blastoise has other problems to deal with, and when faced with Tapu Fini’s frozen lances, she almost instinctively choses to retreat into her shell, using RAPID SPIN to try counter the attack that, while not likely to cause significant damage, could potentially freeze her. And it did. Or, well, at least part of her; the top of her shell being FROZEN OVER and covered in ice by the time she came back out again.

Fernando is onto something here, but of course Mars isn’t about to share the reasons why he may be right. Adversity happens to be a recurring theme in his life, and whatever damage the legendary pokémon is about to cause, it surely won’t even come close to the kind of things people have made him face in the past.

If witnessing the power of a pokémon like Tapu Fini had been enough to make him falter, then Mars would have considered himself a weak person who deserved everything that had happened to him. This is not who he is, and he will never be this.
[break][break]
”Hmm… I think I’ll take that as a compliment, thanks.” The man smirks, since he does appreciate the words. ”This sure would be a bit anticlimactic if I had shaken in fear when seeing it though.” Are there actually people like that out there? Probably.
[break][break]
While their short conversation happens, the Sharpedo continues THRASHING the Marill around, AQUA TAIL thankfully not being nearly as effective or powerful as her previous attack. She could shake that off easily even when being this tired and weakened, and she did, although things were likely to not look so good for her when coming out of her rampage.

Things also didn’t look too good for the Blastoise, who roared in pain when being hit by the MOONBLAST. But, she stood her ground (or more like she continued to swim in place?), ready to attack...

Or not?

In a small miscalculation, her cannons had also been FROZEN, leaving her unable to retaliate for now.

Honestly, Mars finds it kind of shocking that the little Marill can even BELLY DRUM under these conditions, but the tiny blue mouse is resilient as heck, huh? ’Note to self: get one of those.’ It’s half water type, after all, and he sure can vibe with that.

Putting those thoughts aside though…

If this somehow hadn’t been a losing battle before, it sure is now.
[break][break]
The THRASHING ends suddenly and unexpectedly. The Sharpedo stops swimming and opens her jaws, shaking her head wildly (or her whole body, I suppose?) as if she suddenly has a really bad headache. She’s CONFUSED, and this is her own fault, because it comes as the inevitable result of her rampage. It leaves her an easy target.

Mars stares at her, not surprised, but disappointed in her stupid choices. Almost as if saying: ’You did this to yourself, stop whining.’
[break][break]
If there’s any silver lining, maybe it is that NATURE’S MADNESS isn’t quite as devastating as before. But of course, this in itself is deceiving, as it just means the Blastoise’s health may be falling way too low. At least her cannons work this time though, and she shoots another bright FLASH CANNON at her mighty opponent. Not like that will do much, but what else is she supposed to do?

Talk about overkill.

Mars knows what facing overwhelming power is like, but as he watches Tapu Fini go on what could only be called a ‘single punch bloody rampage’, he understands why some people would shiver and cower at such a sight. But he’s not one of those people, and stubbornly, the man holds his ground, his composure never betraying him even if the oceans around him are turning into a bloodbath.

Why? Perhaps it’s because he refuses to give into fear like he did for so many years when he was a child. Perhaps, it’s simply his narcissism playing its part, telling him that a man like him should cower before no one.

He sees the Marill floating idly, unconscious, just as his pokémon are.
[break][break]
No mercy even for teammates, huh?
[break][break]
Bringing out two pokéballs, he calls back his Blastoise and Sharpedo.
[break][break]
”That was… enlightening. Thank you for the battle.” He smirks, because enlightening it sure was, even if his pokémon were completely overwhelmed by the power of the Alolan Guardian... or, perhaps precisely because they were.

It could be said that a man who names himself after a god of war surely must know the importance of understanding the strength of his opponent, no?
