Dumped at the battlefield

In the end, they barely made it before the match was called against them.

The dream was over, leaving him disoriented and dulled.

Had he done something wrong? Perhaps he had... the fact that he even needed to ask was surely such a sign.

Time passed but he didn't seem to notice; before he knew it, an alarm was ringing loudly in his ear. Not from his phone, but from Raki. His phone had long since given up on him.

He had ran for the Battle Tent in a blur of motion he now couldn't quite recall; several times had to be pulled back onto the proper path by an irritated Raki.

Now, they stood surrounded by spectators, and the man's long history with such settings reared in its ugly head. He really didn't want to be here anymore.

Not in the stadium. Not in Slateport. Not in Hoenn.

His lip pulled taut as his hands squeezed into fists, his gaze falling away from the roaring crowd to his opponent.

The true reason so many people were present, clearly.

As beautiful as she was surely capable, the Elite 4 member Stormy Silph stood on the other side of the field.

He felt too tired to think of how amazing an opportunity for growth this would have been for Raki.

The Riolu didn't need to be told, however. Despite his trainer's despondent attitude, the canine stepped forth with unshakeable confidence.

At that, the man sighed, rolling his neck and shoulders before pulling his face into a blank mask.

"It's an honor to face one of this region's top 5 trainers." The man intoned, folding his arm over his chest and bowing. "We'll be learning much from this match. Thank you."

A dead man would've had more inflection than the blonde at that very moment, but he was doing his honest best.

The crowd is cheering, Stormy's arms are in the air and she's laughing. It's a beautiful day, one full of promise and energy and cheerful spirit.[break][break]

When her opponent steps up to the bat, Stormy's attention draws downward to the young Riolu at his side. It reminds her fondly of her own Lucario she'd trained once.[break][break]

"Oh pshhh! No need for formalities, and don't bow! Out here, I'm just Stormy! Now how about we have some fun, yeah?"[break][break]

What sense of heartbreak or disinterest the man projected was otherwise ignored or overlooked by the exuberant young woman. Perhaps he had had more than a few bad rounds. Nothing to keep down about, this was, after all, just for fun![break][break]

"Shall we give 'em a show, Oricorio?"[break][break]

The black baille-style Oricorio begins to twirl in the air, but the faster it turns, the hotter it seems to burn. Black feathers turn red, igniting with flames as the little bit performs a REVELATION DANCE to start the battle.

Gwyar blinked at Stormy.

"I can't just not bow." He was a knight! They bowed.

But clearly, she was having none of it, prompting the man to rub at the back of his neck, his gaze drifting to the floor and away from the battlefield.

"I'm afraid fun feels a bit beyond me right now. Apologies."

While the man protests weakly in defense of his way of subservient life, fiery feathers fill the battlefield as the Oricorio twirled elegantly, causing Raki to yelp as he leapt back, the swirl of flames that burst around the bird threatening to sear off his fur.

There was not a whole lot he could do against this, he realized... not from his own limited pool of skills.

His gaze snapped back at his opponent, his face setting on a determined expression-

Before he raised his arm in the air and crossed a foot over the other, mirroring the Oricorio's stance.

With a howl, he began to twirl around much like her, waves of vacuum wind gathering around him like a tornado as he spun counter clockwise to her, his winds slamming against her fiery vortex and grinding almost audibly against them!

Raki is using Copycat!

Stormy grins, shaking her head and waving her hands. Formalities could be left at the door, here.[break][break]

And his continued attempts to be listless and unhappy are ignored. Her good mood is spritely enough to keep them both afloat, surely. At the very least, she is unperturbed by it all. She was ready for a battle![break][break]

Oricorio coos in surprise as the Riolu mimics her. Fiery flames fan out from the little tyke, brushing up against her own feathers. Curious, curious indeed![break][break]

With a squeal, the bird retaliates, melting seamlessly into a TEETER DANCE thanks to her DANCER ability. It is meant to confuse and disorient, with too many feathers in too many formations. Dance, puppy, dance!

Gwyar's depression stands steadfast against Stormy Silph's sunny disposition, willing to fight the 'good fight'. It can almost feel this woman is in a happy relationship, the nerve.

Raki quickly realizes that trying to out-dance a dancer might have been a terrible idea as he gets swept into the Oricorio's rhythm, clumsily following along to her steps like a student on his first lesson.

Before long, he's both feeling sick and seeing double, his little paws slapping atop its maw to stop himself from ejecting his lunch just a little too solidly!

Raki is confused! He hurt himself in confusion!

It is a brave face he sees. Beneath her sunny disposition and exuberant warmth is a lonely woman. Her relationship with Miles Sharp, while sweet, was nothing but stressful. It didn't help that he had been unavailable and unreachable for a long time now.[break][break]

But worrying about it helped no one.[break][break]

Riolu spills his guts all over the battlefield, and Oricorio makes a point to never land for fear of getting unecessarily dirty. Yuck![break][break]

"Keep it up!"[break][break]

She pushes backward, sending sharp AIR SLASHES to rattle the confused Riolu.

Quite tragic for poor stormy. Guess no one present was truly happy in these trying times.

As it turned out, michiko maeda's choice for 'Raki's' name was appropriate.

Confused, dizzy and still dancing, the little puppy somehow managed to drunkenly stumble in and out of the Oricorio's aim, blades of wind cleaving into the dirt below him and just barely missing him as he dizzily swiped at the air in a futile attempt to attack.

With one final swing, his entire body toppled over, the last of the air cutters swiping over his head harmlessly as he face planted on the floor.

Raki hurt himself in confusion!

Stormy purses her lips, surprised, genuinely, by the clumsy display. In fact, it prompts her to chuckle, covering her mouth with one hand.[break][break]

Oricorio pulls back in surprise as well, watching in dismay as the little puppy face-plants in the sand. She sets down beside the fallen puppy, using her wings to DOUBLE-SLAP some sense into him.

Raki was not feeling well.

SLAP-SMACK!

The puppy leapt back to its feet following two solid smacks across the face, shaking his head wildly as he stumbled back, glaring at the Oricorio before barking angrily.

That didn't help, damn it!

Oh wait... It did...

... The Riolu suddenly blurred forward, covering the distace between itself and the Oricorio and attempting to slam it with its shoulder and back.

He appreciated the help and all, but they were still opponents here!

Raki (was) snapped out of confusion! Raki used Quick Attack!

One, two... three is not necessary. Each wing slaps back and forth across the pups face, jarring it awake. Not that it had been asleep, mind, but.. you know what I mean.[break][break]

Oricorio jumps back when Riolu does, taken aback by the angry reaction. It covers her face with her wing, and is therefore susceptible to the QUICK ATTACK that barrels her over. Trampled in the dirt, she squawks in alarm, tossing wild AIR SLASHES in return.

Flying type moves were what we call a massive pain in the ass for poor little fighting-types- of which Raki was one.

Loud yelps left the puppy as he was blasted off the Oricorio, bouncing off the ground once, twice, then thrice before finally managing to grind to a halt, his arms pin wheeling wildly as he nearly went for a fourth bonk before barely managing to find his balance.

The little puppy panted tiredly as he glared at the bird. None of its moves were really effective against it, and it had type advantage... How was it supposed to handle this...?

Normally, this was the part were the trainer interferred, but Gwyar was zoning out thinking about doctors- and his approach to pokemon training was teaching the pokemon to fight on its own anyway. Raki was supposed to handle himself in these battles, win or lose.
Raki's getting his ass beat!

"I know this is supposed to be a 'for-fun' battle and all, but you still need to be present and attentive to your Pokemon! He's lost without your guidance, man! Pay attention to him, give him some help!"[break][break]

Especially with a Pokemon like that, who relied on a powerful bond with their trainer in order to get stronger. He would never evolve if he didn't know this man had his full faith in him.[break][break]

The bird performs another REVELATION DANCE, twirling as it rises back into the air, fanning itself in flames.

Gwyar blinked, snapping out of his stupor as his opponent shouted at him from the other side of the field. He glanced at her, then at Raki...

And found that he almost didn't care, really.

He hadn't felt this detached from his pokemon or a battle since his first burnt out, well over 12 years ago. Had he always felt this tired and old? He had thought himself in the best shape of his life a mere few weeks back...

There was no point in putting in any further effort now that things had gotten to this point; Raki didn't have anything that could truly hurt the Oricorio enough to make up for everything.

But a knight had to at least make an effort.

Stupid knight rules.

"... You are quite right, Ms. Bronwen." The man said as he swept back the hair off his face, pulling his bangs back into a semblance of order. "Raki, on your feet."

The little puppy glanced over his shoulders in askance, tired and panting.

"I'll not be making this a regular thing. I don't make a point to micromanage, so commit this to memory and study it in the future." He said, before speaking. "Now, let us begin... Rock Smash; create a barrier."

The little puppy nodded sharply, its paw gleaming white as he lifted it high in the air, before bringing it crashing down upon the arena below it.

Spiderweb cracks spread all over the floors and quickly turned to fissures as the Riolu grabbed at the earth and upheaved a broken boulder with a grunt, lifting it high before slamming it back down in front of himself as the dancing flames beared upon him, the scorching heat slamming against the rocks.

"Be ready. You'll need to be quick for your next instructions." The man droned out blankly.

-Raki used Rock Smash to create a barrier!

Stormy, satisfied, reclines on her heels. That was more like it - now they were facing a real challenge as opposed to an overwhelmed, listless pup.[break][break]

Oricorio's flames slam against the rocks but don't touch the Riolu behind. He might feel a bit uncomfortable, but it was bearable. Curious, the little blackbird flies overtop, hovering above to crane her head.[break][break]

"Wanna copy that, Oricorio?"[break][break]

With a shrill, musical cry, the bird eagerly uses MIRROR MOVE to shuffle the boulders. With a kick of her talon, she pushes the rocks back and into the Riolu!
