Sage shrugged. He was going in circles.

“Like I said, it’s cheap. I don’t need a lot. Why are you badgering me about it?”

She’d never had a lot. She’d not been bestowed the same blessings of luxury as Matias likely had in his adolescence. She was most content keeping the extra cash in her pocket.

He was right.

She didn’t know what to say, now that she’d been called out. So, she played with a cuticle for a moment in thought, while idly looking at his face. Something in hers vaguely apologized, although she couldn’t have been sure why.

“I just needed to collect my thoughts, I guess.”

Leaving Delta behind had been too easy in a way, and the guilt was mounting. After his rejection, she’d ran again; this time, placing distance between herself and her daughter simultaneously.

For what felt like once in her life, there was a room to herself—until Matias had come to tell her it wasn’t good enough.

He stood at the wall, clearly uncomfortable. While in the doorway she'd noted how much he looked the same, she began to trace over his age. Differences. Unfamiliar scars.

“And I'm still not done processing things. That's why I came here.”

It implied that she couldn't collect her thoughts around him, maybe, whether it was actually her intention or not.

"i get it. i just thought things would be different, you know? like the way they were before you left."

he takes a step towards her, nearing the bed though not quite fully approaching, perhaps held back by something unseen.

"but i'll be here when you're ready."

As she sat on the bed, looking up at him, she felt a new discomfort herself—out of seemingly nowhere. She brushed it aside.

“I know you will.”

Eyes finally averted again to the floor for a moment.

“Things will go back to normal, okay? I just… wasn’t expecting a lot of this news.”

She felt guilty, but she didn’t tell him.

She couldn’t help but feel, momentarily, like they both should have been dead.

Her face took on a look which he’d likely find unfamiliar. It cracked with pain and regret; something she rarely allowed herself to feel.

“Yeah.”

She agreed, and the tone of her voice held some sort of strange, isolating energy. One which drew away from him internally, for perhaps the first time ever.

“You should’ve.”

a part of him believes he deserves this and what's to come.

“Pushed me away? I was already gone.”

Gone from his life. He’d started a different one, unfamiliar to her. They had grown apart.

“I knew those people, too.”

It was a lot bigger than just the two of them. She shook her head, still in disbelief. She’d spent all week remembering names, and paining herself with memories.

“I should’ve been there to help bury them. To speak to their families.” Sage didn’t often cry—but she’d done it for days, now. Tears welled again. She swallowed it down with a willful sigh. “I feel like you’ve robbed me, Matias. Of duties, and grief…”

Something in her combusted, for just a rare moment. Maybe she didn't consider her words long enough. The hurt got the better of her.

“And quite a bit of my respect for you.”

She looked away again, staring off into somewhere, and took several moments to think. Not about how, but about if.

“I’m not sure that you can.”

She’d needed more than a few days, and he’d come knocking too early. For now, all she could give were unfinished thoughts and uncertainties.

Her head shook again.

“But really, Matias… I just found out that the father of my child is a mass murderer.”

She chewed on the next words briefly before finally looking up at him.

“I’m not really that worried about us right now.”
