Honestly, she hadn’t expected to win.

Her gaze crossed over to him with a small smirk, not quite smug but proud, and surprised at herself. She was never all too enthusiastic. Fairly subdued, even… but not in a way that was necessarily awkward.

Some might’ve even said she had resting bitch face. There was nothing to it. She was dry like bitter wine, but friendly nonetheless.

What was her prize?

“Uh…” She pursed her lips a little, and then pointed at what caught her eye. “The Riolu.”

When it was taken down, she handed it over to King with a knowing smile that maybe she was keeping it turned down on purpose.

After then turning from him, she put one hand in her pocket and swung the Phanpy from the other, looking around and beginning to walk down the path again. She expected that he’d be next to her.

“Now you have dinner and a dog. Don’t say I never gave you anything.”

He wanted to keep going.

A small curl crept in her smile.

“Okay, one more. Let’s go.”

Yet again, her eyes wandered across neon lights. A dwindling evening crowd. Teenagers running between, shrieking; baggies of Tynamo; little boxes with Dwebbles in them. An inflatable Wooper passed by.

“Which one do you wanna do next?”

This was his first experience, after all. She didn’t mind letting him call the shots--not in this kind of situation, at least. She was easy.

is it a fools errand, to get his hopes up like this? to enjoy this moment so entirely?

as the brow falls, his grin rises. despite it slowly crawling closer and closer to the end of the night, it's still as alive as ever. he can't help but feel the infectious energy, and smile along with it.

his eyes fall onto a rather large booth. a number of jars laid out in the large circular platform, with quite a few people tossing rings in its direction.

She was getting tired, despite the vibrant energy of the carnival. It didn’t translate to her limbs, or negate the fact that she’d been on her feet all day already—but she went with him, content to be the company he seemed like he needed, for now.

The lights and smells all around, together with the feeling of plush in her hand made her feel like a kid again. Not on the job, despite a lack of fuel, now she could enjoy it.

He led them to the next stall. Plastic rings clinked against glass jars. Something that looked easy was deceptively difficult, and it showed in the faces of those who had spent too much money and could not stand to lose.

“Sure.”

She cast a look over at him, pressed smile containing something knowing and amused.

The carny came over, looking for cash. For the first round, Sage decided she would cover it, handing over a few bills and then rings to him.

“I’ll kick your ass at this, too,” she teased, tapping into an elusive competitive spirit; or maybe it was for his benefit alone. Either way, she flashed a small grin and tossed.

1-90 = fail

Maybe Sage was one of those schmucks, because she didn’t do very well. While King beat her at the game, they’d both done remarkably better than she figured they might.

Sage could have walked away then, not easily sucked into things like this—but, King wanted to keep going, so they’d keep going. Best two out of three.

“Okay. You're on.”

If she got another one, she’d surprise herself.

When her turn was up again, she paid for some more rings, and did her best.

Sage hadn’t expected them to do well, of course, but that hadn’t kept her from handing over cash to put a smile on King’s face—if only because it had been so mopey before. She definitely hadn’t expected to beat him, though.

“Guess so,” she responded with a small smile. Drinks were definitely on him, especially if she had to do extra cooking now.

“Yeah, let’s go. I’m tired.” A yawn proved it, briefly shielded by a palm.
