The door chimed as Killian entered the bakery. A cloud of differing smells perfumed the air around him. Strawberry, vanilla, cinnamon, and various other sweet scents. They rumble his stomach, pooling water in his mouth as an often forgotten sweet tooth begged for indulgence. As varied and delicious as the smells were, the number of people able to enjoy them wasn't quite as large.[break][break]

In fact, a brief glance around the small storefront said he was the only customer at the moment. Odd for a Tuesday afternoon, but maybe he'd just missed the rush of hungry patrons.[break][break]

Loveless purred from his shoulder. Her lavender eyes scanned the baked goods on display behind glass. [break][break]

Killian, on the other hand, looked around for the woman he was here to see. amaryllis karneva. His sister. Another bastard child of his fathers. Unlike Viola Chase, she grew up in Hoenn. Neither knew of Killian or each other, but that was about to change.[break][break]

He didn't spot her. Was she in the back? Killian sighed and reached up to scratch underneath Loveless's chin. [break][break]

"Hello? I'm interested in ordering a wedding cake."

Beauty is found in creativity, unbound and limitless as you grasp at the outlines of something you can envision. For Lis, it is through baking that she may define the world - Through rosy lenses, through thorned memories or serenity; There is never a moment in this kitchen where she isn't feeling something as she works.

The sights, the sounds, the smell of sweetness roasting in the oven. Everything about this place is both chaotic and perfectly organised, every piece exactly where they need to be even as her pokemon rush about in the background - Batters mixed, ingredients kept away, bowls stacked upon each other, icing swirling atop chocolate drizzled bases.

It is only when Dianthus pokes her head in that the world seems to stop, azure eyes flickering to the doorway as the Espeon beckons her forth. A new customer, as per the uncontrollable flicking of her ears. Dusting excess flour from her hands, Lis drapes her apron onto the side bench, readjusting her hair if only to seem somewhat presentable to the visitor.

"Well, congratulations to the lucky duo! I assuming you and a special someone?" Her counter is cleared in favour of empty papers, a pencil twirled between her fingers as she eyes the man standing before her. "So, what kind of theme you going for?"

"Heh." peering over the counter, Killian notes the mess sprawled haphazardly about the kitchen. The view through the door is limiting, but he sees enough to know they've something in common. Two things, he corrected, spotting the Espeon on the floor.[break][break]

Loveless tilts her head to peer down at the feline. Eyelids half-open, she stalked Dianthus until the Espeon disappeared into the kitchen.[break][break]

Out pops the sister a few seconds later.[break][break]

"You guessed it." a deep, cheerful smile painted his lips, "And thanks, it's been a long time coming. The wedding's a ways away, but I like to be prepared." overly so, sometimes.[break][break]

"Are you familiar with the Pokemon Jellicent? "Something based around them is what I'm going for." the kings and queens of water. A solid choice for a wedding cake, he thought - better than the obvious one of Alcremie. How many requests for cakes based on it did she get, a dozen or more? [break][break]

"I can't help but notice you're all alone here. Is that normal?"

Ah, so he's one of those people. Well, she can't quite fault him for being so caught up over a momentous occasion.

Dianthus is more than curious when it comes to the other Espeon, more than protective when it comes to her trainer, gracefully leaping onto the table if only to slink herself under Lis' arm. Shifting over to give the Espeon space, Lis can't help but laugh at the blank gaze she gives. "C'mon, gal. Can't work with your butt in the way, unless you're planning to write down the specifics."

The psychic easily garners herself a pat on the head, a soft purr rumbling in her throat as she nudges the pencil. Never one to leave a creation without a trace of her, it's just like every order they've managed before.

"Jellicent, huh? I remember them being a problem when I was a kid. Too many swimming near to coast, parents got afraid that their kids would get snatched, my mom included." She scribbles a note down, passing the pencil to Dianthus and giving her time to sketch a Jellicent with her Psychic abilities. "Pity though, they're really pretty. Got together with a buncha kids to go hunting for them. Would've caught one too if it weren't for rangers crashing the party."

Lis pouts a little at the memory but she had ultimately understood their intentions. Probably wouldn't have been good publicity if anything happened to the kids -

A prod from her partner drags her back to reality, surprise melting into embarrassment as she sheepishly tucks loose strands of hair behind her ear. "Sorry, rambling. Habit and all! Most people that visit are usually locals and the occasional traveller tends to bring some interesting stories. But uhm yeahp! Jellicent themes... I can work with that!"

It is here that she notices how Dianthus has drawn little crowns onto the paper. Maybe she's onto something? They'll have to experiment later!

"It's about as normal as it gets! Mom had me here and decided to settle down, open a shop. Ended up creating this place and taught me the basics. Been in charge ever since I completed my first few orders, so..." It feels almost natural to count the years by hand. "... around the age of 12 maybe? She ended up taking the backseat when I was 15 and decided to start travelling the world when I turned 17. Comes back every once in a while with gifts and new ideas for sure. Last I heard, she was in Galar experiencing the curry spices. Dunno if that could be used in any recipes."

Watching and listening. They're two skills that served Killian well in life. Been honing them into an art form since thirteen. Pulling them out once she starts rambling happens naturally. [break][break]

Like one of her sugary treats glazed in honey, silence coated his tongue. The diamonds of his eyes focused on subtle movements that drag pencil across paper. [break][break]

"I've never seen an Espeon draw before." Loveless certainly couldn't. Perhaps she should learn? It's a talent that be useful in Killian's line of work.[break][break]

Another commonality.[break][break]

"You're fine." Killian spoke up as she apologized, "I don't mind listening to you ramble." especially about herself. [break][break]

"Shame that ranger interrupted your capture, though. They're a real pain the ass sometimes."[break][break]

Razz Kingsman, Kidnapper of Girlfriends comes to mind. Killian suppressed the urge to frown.[break][break]

"You've been doing this on your own that long?" that's four things now that they share. Papa Decker must have a bag full of mostly similar genetics. "That's impressive. No wonder you came so highly recommended." from his grunts. The ones he'd been sending in here the past few weeks to order baked goods.[break][break]

"So, your mom's exploring the world but what about your dad? Is he around?"

"Dianthus kinda picked it up over the years. Has a real talent for it too." Pride shines with the words Lis speaks, a love for the Espeon all too clear with the scratch behind the ear she gives. "She's a real smart girl and an even greater companion."

Though she does agree with the sentiment of troublesome rangers, she does feel as if there's a little more to his thoughts than he lets on. But she isn't quite here to judge him for whatever grudges or secrets he may hold.

"I wouldn't say I'm highly recommended though... This is honestly quite a small bakery around these parts." Sheepishly tapping the back of her wrist, Lis can't help but laugh at the comment. The only real thing that matters is the fact that he's reciprocating her ramblings so effortlessly, willing to hold an actual conversation with her rather than just brush it off.

Ah, but he quickly finds a sore spot and hits it hard. The mere mention of the words 'mom' and 'but' existing in the same sentence is enough to elicit dread, visible in the way her finger twitches as she fixes her gaze to the paper and its writings.

"Don't know much about him to be honest. Never got to meet him. Don't think I'd like him that much if I had the chance to see him now."

"As you can see," he nodded to Loveless, "I'm a big fan of Espeon myself. Loveless here has been with me ever since I was a child." [break][break]

Killian's lips purse for a moment - pressed into a straight line by the memory of his past that stings like a Beedrill. Now more than ever, they're a fresh wound, one he tears open further by opting to share. [break][break]

"She was a gift from my mother." the full details were a story for another time. Best told when Lis knew the truth. That they were connected - linked by blood, and trauma if the way her fingers twitch say anything. [break][break]

Killian nodded. "You're right." he states matter-of-factly, "He's a very disappointing man. Life's much better without him than with him." and just like with Viola Chase, Killian lets the implication hang in the air. [break][break]

There are better ways to do this. Words Killian could choose carefully and weave together like he would when dealing with a client. Far better, he wagers, to rip it off the like a band-aid. And, perhaps somewhat cruelly, he wants to see her reaction. Chase had gotten angry. [break][break]

What would Lis do?

She has no idea what the man intends with the way he's leading the conversation, but his comments are not quite ones that she expects. And perhaps, they're not one she quite likes, considering that his blood runs through her veins.

"That's because I do." but not in the way she'd assume. Killian had never met their father personally, but he'd watched him from a distance. Childish curiosity about the father that never was compelled Killian to search - and obsession forced him to learn everything he could about their dad. [break][break]

The sudden panic catches him off guard. Once his surprise settles, Killian's quick to realize what's going on. A panic attack. Unloading everything on her so suddenly had been more than Lis could handle [break][break]

Lis's Pokemon rush to her aid. The way they move hinted at this being something that happened often. Killian frowned and bent down. [break][break]

"It's okay, Lis. Just take a few deep breaths." his voice is hushed despite the fact they're alone. Killian does his best to make himself sound as soothing as possible. Speaking how he reminded his mother used to do to him whenever he was upset. His instinct muscles urge him to reach out and comfort her, but his arms remain locked at his side. Killian clicked his tongue instead. [break][break]

A dim light filled Loveless's eyes at the sound, and she reached out with her powers. Sending a wave of Calm energy into Lis's Mind to ease her anxiety.
