While it doesn’t occur to Cian that this sounds like a promise, Mars definitely notices. It’s the kind of thing anyone could say and it would be meaningless, the kind of polite response that is to be expected in this sort of situation. Yet, even knowing this, he finds himself hoping those words are true, because even though he couldn’t care less for cake, spending his next birthday with Cian sounds… perfect, honestly.

Well, add that to the list of feelings and thoughts Mars tells himself to ignore.

Preparing the salad doesn’t take too long, because even not knowing what the hell he’s doing, it’s no more than a salad, after all. Did he season it without being reminded to? No. Is it the most amazing salad out there? Definitely not. But, it is what it is, and truly Mars couldn’t care much, as his attention returns to Cian the moment he’s done. He watches him, taking in every little movement.

”You’re really good at all this, you know? It’s cute.” Of course he has no apprehensions in sharing his thoughts, a bright smile being shot in Cian’s direction.

while usually he'd deflect, cian accepts the compliment this time, returning a bright smile of his own. he flushes just a little; enough to notice, maybe.

the stove flicks on, heating up the skillet. not long after that, once the pan's nice and hot, cian places the two cuts of steak on them.

it sizzles, smelling really pleasant.

cian turns back to mars then leans on the counter, nearing him.

"it should be ready in about ten minutes."

Or, more like he tells himself he must be imagining things, because it just doesn’t seem possible. Cian blushing? Mars is sure that’s something he has never seen before in all the time he has known him.

Maybe, instead of wasting his time thinking about all that, Mars should do something useful like set the table for them. But, as one can probably expect, this also doesn’t occur to him at all – maybe because he has also never had to set a table before, or maybe because he’s too distracted by the situation.

”Ten minutes, huh? What are we going to do in all that time?” There is a playful smirk, because of course there is, and although he’s mostly joking, he does also move closer. Then again, this may just be because he wants to be close to Cian.

He does, however, hold his breath without even realizing he’s doing as much, his gaze never leaving him no matter how close they are. So close. Close enough that their lips almost touch…

”Mmm… True, but...Fuck that?” Just like that, Mars is the one who leans in this time, placing a quick yet surprisingly gentle kiss just by the corner of his lips. Without even thinking of it, his hand finds Cian’s.

”...We really should go set the table though…” He says this, but he doesn’t move from where he is.

despite his words, he also doesn't move. his hand squeezes mars' right before he leans in to kiss him. it's gentle at first, almost a tease, but it grows rougher, more passionate with every passing second.

the steaks continue to sizzle.

It’s soft, and it’s sweet, and it only takes a moment for it stops being both these things. Or, maybe it doesn’t… Maybe those things always remain, but just take a back seat to all those other more overpowering feelings.

It’s rough, and a hand is placed at Cian’s waist, pulling him even closer while the other still holds on firmly onto his.

The scent coming from the sizzling skillet fills the kitchen, and as delightful as it is, it too becomes of little significance.

all that matters is mars.

cian's pulled closer; his hand slips out and reaches for the belt around mars' waist intead. there's a sense of urgency in how he unbuckles, how he tugs, and his lips snake into a grin before he lowers to dote kisses along the way.

he shrugs, dismissing the blame even though it's definitely on him for starting it. the poor table will remain messy for a little longer, but that's fine, especially so when he's too wrapped up enjoying the warmth mars provides.

"yeah? i guess it's a good thing i prepared more steaks then."

during mars' fiasco of preparing a salad, cian found time to season another pair of steaks just in case something happened. his hunch paid off.

"i can go cook them now, if you'd like."
