He should have known Cian would be dismissive, that wouldn’t really care. That he wouldn’t understand, because being in Team Rocket has probably desensitized him to that sort of stuff.

He shouldn’t be dismissive. It’s dangerous that he is, and it makes Mars worry for him.

Still, after a sigh, there is a chuckle and a small smile.

He pulls him into a hug, holding him close while he comfortably rests his forehead on Cian’s shoulder.

but he doesn't know, at least not in the way he should.

the thought both saddens and angers him. to think mars lived any life but the one he's shown him is strange, but to find out that it's possibly a cruel life? no one deserves that, especially not mars.

Team Rocket is one thing, but the things Mars has done? All the suffering he has caused? All the lives that have been lost because of him? The ones he has taken without a second thought?

None of that is on Team Rocket, it’s on him.

Cian sure does, there’s no question about that, no matter what he might have done, and hasn’t Mars himself always fought to be happy despite all the horror and pain the Marzáns have brought upon his life? Fought to be happy even if he has done things of which his past self wouldn’t be proud? Cosima would want him to be happy, he knows as much. His father had given up everything for his happiness, as had his mother. He owes it to them as much as he owes it to himself. He fucking deserves it.

So, Cian’s right, as he usually seems to be about most things between them...

Even if slightly, the thought makes him smile, and a hand is then raised to gently rest on Cian’s cheek, gaze never leaving his.

There’s a lot that still worries him, a lot they still don’t know about each other, and a lot that hasn’t been said, but… it’s a start, and maybe between them it’s okay to take things step by step.

What even are they to each other right now? It’s important, and he should probably ask so they can be on the same page about all that, but instead he chuckles as well, enjoying the moment too much.

Perhaps Mars shouldn’t be optimistic with the way things have gone in his life in the past, perhaps he should hold onto his doubts, but how could he when moments like these are so perfect and so nice? That’s exactly what they deserve: perfection, no more no less. And, if he has to, he will make sure that nothing and no one ruins that for them.

But, for now, all thoughts of protecting the things he cherishes are set aside, because the kiss is sweet and passionate and he smiles into it as Cian pushes him onto his back. In return, he grabs onto Cian’s shirt, pulling him closer as the kiss becomes rougher.

Good thing that the cushion the Zeraora destroyed wasn’t the one right behind him.

Gentle summer breeze blows, and with it down feathers are scattered.

They really shouldn’t be doing all this on the balcony, but Mars really couldn’t care less, his attention being stolen away from that sort of thought by kisses and touch and by chuckling lightly as Cian makes demands. When has Mars ever allowed anyone to give him orders like that?

”Mmm… Fine, but you take yours off too.” He smirks, pulling at Cian’s shirt one last time in order to bring him in for a kiss, perhaps one rougher and deeper than what is needed.

Then, as if in contrast, there is a gentle push, giving himself enough space to pull his shirt off and toss it right onto the discarded cushion. A hand finds Cian’s belt, the same smirk tugging at his lips as he looks up at him.
