The problem with mountains was trying to search every nook and cranny. What that meant was getting on top of steep cliffs and cliff faces that seemed to have caves against their surface. As a ranger, Derek was being trained to scale treacherous terrains. It was a hard job, but it had it's merits. Like knowing where to find certain kinds of pokemon.

He'd been climbing part of Mt. Pyre for no other reason. He'd almost made it to the top, but decided to stop a level or two below. Placing an incense between some stones, he hid back to see what it would attract...

The Kadabra that happened upon the incense was tempting, but not the squatter Derek had been hoping for. Even if it would end up as a net loss, there were always more Abra and the like to be found out in the wild. It was the Unown that eluded him so.

Allowing the wild psychic to roam freely and eventually pass, Derek continued to stake out the incense some distance away. His figure was well hidden, though considering he was attracting psychics...maybe hiding wasn't really an advantage. Either way, Derek demonstrated commitment to his post as he patiently awaited the next pokemon.

Watching a wild Bronzor float around the area for a small time, it eventually left in search of other means of entertainment. Unbeknownst to Derek, it was looking for other psychics to play with.

Flipping open the mysterious device, a few more entries had been made. Reading them over while he waited, Derek's mind tried to piece together the puzzle. The one at the end it was made him wonder. Why Palkia...?

Resting eyes on a little bell pokemon, Derek figured he wouldn't be getting any answers here. Picking up the incense as opposed to harboring guilt for littering, the ranger summons a Garchomp to quickly fly him back to Slateport City.
