"dude, that's a big cat."

a large, swole purugly (that might as well be a luxray) enters the lilycove department store. most shoppers back away from it, but those that tried to get their pokemon out to fight it was calmed down by the security, not wanting property damage from any fights.

'rangers are on their way to deal with this,' they say.

kyle watches as a passerby, sunglasses and cap on despite still having his recognizable hairstyle and poochy print shit worn. he keeps looking outside for the first responder, a phone clutched on his hand to film the upcoming fight.

he'd upload it if it would be memorable.

Shopping is supposed to be an enjoyable experience.

To Mars, a relaxing one, because there’s nothing quite like buying some nice clothes or so after a long week of hard work. He deserves it. He has earned it. ’Treat yo self’, isn’t that what they say?

So, needless to say, he’s enjoying his shopping.

He has about… let’s say eight bags marked with the minimalist logos of brands most people usually avoid because of their ludicrous prices, and he’s so preoccupied with paying for the ninth that he doesn’t notice the way people seem to suddenly disappear from the area around him – nor does he pay too much attention to how nervous the cashier seems as he finishes sliding his shiny black POG Bank credit card through the terminal. It may be simply that he had a long week, or it may be that Mars isn’t great about caring for what most people do at places like these. Either way, it really works to his detriment this time, doesn't it?

The moment he turns and starts walking away with his bags is the moment he sees the Purugly only metres away.

As if an angered bull seeing red, the pokémon seems clearly upset, and for whatever reasons beyond Mars’ comprehension, it decides to charge directly at him.

Maybe it wants something in his bags or to play with the bags themselves. Maybe it just hates rich people.

”Woah! Hey!”

With skills akin to those of an expert torero, the charging pokémon is swiftly avoided by taking a step to the side with a half-turn, even adding a little inevitable flair because Mars is dramatic like that.

The Purugly soundly crashes against a t-shirt display behind him, and that’s probably bound to make it even more annoyed now...

brows raise when the pokemon takes its attention to one person in particular. there were a hundred more shoppers in the vicinity, but it decides to take its frustrations on a single one instead.

it's sad.

"i think you need to fight for your life now, man," kyle casually mentions as he watches a man dodge the purugly.

the crowd separate themselves from mars. there's panic in some of them, with the younger populace cheering for joy like some crazed maniacs who came to hoenn for the thrills. at this point, kyle won't be surprised if hat was the case.

kyle comes up to security and takes the megaphone they have for the crowds. a flash of his badge that indicates his position in the police gets them to cooperate with him without question.

"everyone out of the building!" he announces. they won't be targeted anyways so it'll be fine. he turns to mars afterwards. "sir, i wish you luck!"

The mere thought of it is ridiculous, so much so that while the Purugly is busy trying to untangle itself from all the t-shirts it crashed against, Mars allows himself the luxury of sparing five precious seconds to turn to see who is out here trying to throw him to the wolves (or to the cats?).

Imagine his surprise when seeing no other than the poster boy for toxic masculinity himself: Hoenn’s own Champion, kyle lopez. Since, yes, the rattail and Poochyena shirt give it away even when he's wearing sunglasses.

It’s then when an idea comes to mind.

How is it that the expression goes? Two birds, one stone?

The bags are set aside.

”Hey! Wait, mind if I borrow that?” With a confident smile and no time to waste, Mars makes his way over to where Hoenn’s favourite cop (a.k.a one of their only ones) stands. Naturally, he completely ignores the badge, all too casually taking the megaphone straight out of Kyle’s hands and wrapping an arm around his shoulders. ”Don’t worry, man, it’s just a kitty. Bet it just wants pets or something. Let’s check out, yeah?”

Just like that, it’s into the megaphone that that magical sound that’s bound to lure any feline is loudly spoken:

And, sure enough, it works like a charm, but as it charges towards them, the Purugly definitely doesn’t look like it just wants pets or anything of the like.

Oh, guess not…. Well, you got this, officer.”

With a hearty pat on the back, Kyle is pushed forward.

he gets pushed to the front. eyes widen in shock, but otherwise, kyle handles it as calm as he can get. he turns his head and reveals the sad truth about society's exploitable laws.

"i can charge you for assault for that," kyle tells mars. it was unwanted physical touching with intent to harm. checks all the boxes, alongside eye witnesses through the mall's security cams.

still, he takes the stand. he cracks his knuckles as he slowly approaches the feral purugly. he locks his eyes with it, and slowly, they circle each other, neither relenting to make an easily countered first move.

they're just like dogs who don't lunge without any sudden movements, or so he thinks.

kyle does the dance and stalls just enough until the cat's inbetween the two of them. it was then that the cat shifts its head and notices the bag that the pog bank ceo carries and turns around.

Why else would it look at Kyle like it wants to claw his face off? Because he wears the smell of wet dog as if it were cologne? No! It’s obviously because he’s rich! And, that’s also probably why the cat’s attention is once again drawn to those shopping bags that are so very important to Mars…

This time, when the Purugly charges towards the bags, it’s a tackle that stops it in its tracks… One that hurts much more than what Mars would have expected. What the hell is this cat made out of, anyway?!

if there's one thing that kyle doesn't want to do, it was to lead the charge.

the champion title doesn't fit to someone with his mindset, but more often than not, he's forced to do so since there's very little people who know what to do in dangerous missions. there's little at stake this time, so he can afford to fuck around.

"there we go!"

as the cat is thrown to the ground by the tackle, kyle quickly runs up to the fallen animal for a follow up. the hit was supposed to keep it to the ground, and so kyle does his best.

he swings his foot, dragging his leg until his shin gets to the cat's gut and going for a full forced kick that leads the fat feline rolling across the smooth, waxed mall tiles.

"good job," he tells the man named after a bar of chocolate.

It’s with a sigh that he stands, brushing down his clothes to get rid of any unwanted dust or wrinkles that may have come thanks to the tackle. In reality the gesture probably doesn’t do much at all, but he has time to kill while Kyle is busy kicking away the humongous cat like this is an impromptu game of football with a very weird ball.

It rolls comically across the tiled floor, and this could almost be called a skit if Mars weren’t so annoyed.

Still, he doesn’t let it show.

”Thanks for the help there. Nice kick.” There’s a slight smirk, and it sure is a good thing that the mall had been evacuated, because they both could be called animal abusers if someone recorded all of this and uploaded it.

the good thing about being the law is that you get to be pardoned much more easily if you have a good standing within the force, which kyle does. even if it does get leaked, he assumes it won't be too much of a problem for him.

"just doing my job," he casually replies as he takes his phone, not a police radio, out and dials the number of the local chief of police of the city.

"yeah, situation's handled somewhat. no need for the rangers to get involved for now."

a few other points were made throughout the call before he drops it. respondents finally arrive just as the call ends, with most of them now investigating the cause of the wild pokemon managing to make its way to the mall.

"oh, yeah. thanks too! if you need help, go ask that guy over there."

kyle taps mars' shoulder and then points at one of lilycove's police officers. he gives little else to work with as he makes out with haste. if he does get in trouble, at least he can pass it to the officer in charge since he's technically not one anymore.
