An arm is offered and, after a few moments of deliberation, gratefully accepted. Whatever guilt she'd felt about stealing him away from his own function has slowly evaporated, making way for nothing but good cheer and the delight of his company.[break][break]

It feels— dare she say it— almost like a date. A secretive smile dances on cashmere lips as Luka allows herself to drift a little closer, their shoulders nearly touching as they walk side by side.[break][break]

"Uhm...basically, yeah. And a change of scenery, I suppose?" A lie by omission is still a lie, but it slips from her lips with such ease that a mere acquaintance has no reason to doubt it. Luka isn't in the business of spilling her entire dubious backstory to those she barely knows, and is even more reluctant to dampen the mood with the more unpleasant details.[break][break]

"When I was younger, my family moved around a lot. So I guess you could say I missed traveling as well? But I'd never been to Hoenn before now, so it seemed as good a place as any!" With her simplistic explanation out of the way, a verdant gaze shifts towards the horizon and the smudges of orange that begin to dot the landscape.[break][break]

"What about you? Did you have a choice to come to Hoenn, or is it just, like...an embassy thing?"

Escorting a proper lady on one's arm was a habit born of royal custom in Hammerlocke. To Remiel, it was akin to shaking someone's hand. Second-nature, even.

But he'd be lying if he said having Luka in such close proximity wasn't pleasant. What did they look like to passerby's, he wondered. A proper couple, perhaps?

Admittedly, he smiled a little at the thought. She and him? Day and night, really. Surely she wouldn't be interested in that. No doubt she had a line of bright-eyed suitors out her door who could match her optimism.

"Well, this is quite the change of scenery to Kalos, that's for sure." He chuckles, reaching out to delicately catch an orange leaf that gently floated downward. He spins it around with his fingers before offering it to Luka with a smile.

"I came here of my own free will after graduating Hammerlocke University. My mother had other expectations for me..." Like leading the entire country of GALAR, for one. "But I endeavored to pursue a career in archaeology... until my people had need of me as ambassador." Though he omits a few truths of his own.

Like an enamored schoolgirl, Luka can't keep her thoughts from being romantically wistful. But again, she's reminded of their difference in status, of the fact that Remiel is a man she barely knows. He's charming and polite, but still a little distant— she's reminded of the businessmen she knew back in Kalos, all polished smiles and dignified charm.[break][break]

The thought strikes a sour note, though she does her best to dismiss it. Remiel is different, surely. Distant, perhaps, but he could easily have dismissed her today and gotten on with his own affairs. And that's not nothing. Is it selfish of her to want his attention to truly mean something?[break][break]

She takes the offered leaf with a smile and happy blush, their fingers grazing as it passes from palm to palm. Luka sucks in a breath as butterflies erupt in the pit of her stomach— how silly she is to be affected by so small a token. But perhaps the banality is what makes it so charming. Something genuine, rather than gratuitous.[break][break]

"Thank you," she says softly, giggles bubbling to the surface to hide her nerves. With a shy smile she tucks the leaf behind her ear, burnt orange clashing with bubblegum pink.[break][break]

That small spark stays with her for the entire evening. It seeps into their small talk, the constant pink of her cheeks. Even the simple act of choosing pumpkins becomes a thrill. And it's all thanks to him. When they return to their pies later, and Luka's turns out almost as badly as she expected, Remiel's good-natured laughter helps to ease the disappointment. They share his underneath the stars as the festival draws to a close, shoulders barely touching as they sit side-by-side.[break][break] And so, with laughter and good cheer, the first of many nights together draws to an end.
