without greyson around, the apartment feels kind of empty. not that the guy moved out or died or anything — aaron assumes he's probably out laying pipe like a certified plumber for his girlfriend or harassing civilians for standing outside a convenience store for too long — but still. hanging out alone in his room is just so much more enjoyable when greyson is also hanging out alone in his room. just two dudes. in their rooms. separately.

a knock on the door rouses him from his pity party. he rises from bed, picks his way past discarded wrappers and suspicious-smelling clothing, and meanders through the much tidier common area before reaching the door.

"oh," he says as he pulls the door open and not-greyson is standing there on the other side. "uh, hey, man. what's, uh ... what's up?"

noah is almost frightened by the appearance of the stranger unveiled by what should've been greyson's door. he swears he has the right address. the right place— but maybe the guy had moved. hoenn's tumult made such minute to minute migrations common. stability, or what noah knew of it, was ever fleeting, despite his belief in what he has secured for himself.

"oh, uh," noah rubs the back of his neck, fingers finding momentary distraction in the bristles of his hairs, "is this greyson's place?"

he's in his gym uniform: tailor made, breezy and sleeveless, made for athleticism and a carefree spirit. having made some time after an errand, he had followed the briny breeze to this apartment.

"are you his... brother? boyfriend?" noah blurts out answers to fill in space.

the man standing outside their apartment just solidifies aaron's theory. the theory, of course, that greyson's parents are rich as hell, what with all the money they seem to toss at people to pretend to be friends with their boy. his gaze floats up to the top of the doorway as though he expects to see GREYSON'S HOVEL carved in the doorframe, then drops his attention back down on not-greyson.

"yeah," he confirms, the door wavering as he leans against the wall. before he can ask any questions of his own, not-greyson pounces on the silence with the two most offensive observations anyone could attempt to make. brother? boyfriend? fuck this guy for insulting his face and his taste in one fell swoop.

but there is something funny about fucking with greyson that makes him answer the question rather than shut the door in this stranger's face. "yeah, something like that," he says, vague, and opens the door wider. "i think he stepped out but you can come in and wait for him if you want." he stops blocking the doorway, an invitation to step inside.

he asks, incredulously. noah's voice hangs in the air like a mist. like laundry. the thinnest shirt worn down by the wind and heat of skepticism and possible belief? which was it? brother? boyfriend? heaven forbid, both?

with a slight shake, noah crosses the threshold of the apartment and enters as half jane goodman, half laurie strode.

"thanks. so, uh, how long have you known each other?" noah makes a guess. one that may pry further answers from the vague shape accompanying him. "i'm noah by the way."

the thick confusion in the other man's "yeah?" lingers in the beat of silence that follows.

"yeah," aaron reaffirms softly with a nod, smiling to himself. the brothers-or-lovers conversation is left on a worrying cliffhanger as he pivots into inviting this absolute stranger into his home. he steps aside and opens the door wider. absolute stranger crosses the threshold like he's being ushered into a rillaboom enclosure.

"me and greyson?" the front door closes with an absentminded shove of his hand as he follows the other man into the living room. the common areas are pretty clean for two dudes, though the standards have been markedly lowered since aaron moved in. "like ... a month?" his head tilts thoughtfully. "yeah, about a month."

"i'm aaron." the introductions are exchanged as aaron slithers into the kitchen, talking over his shoulder to the newly christened noah. "also i was just fucking with you." the freezer hums as he peels the door open and leans in to look at the contents. "i'm his roommate."

"you must be friends with greyson, huh?" considering earlier inquiries, brother and boyfriend could both be crossed out. the question is punctuated by a rumble, then the sound of cardboard boxes tumbling out of the freezer, then the quiet, "shit" of a man who knows, deep in his core, that he is the one who haphazardly threw these tv dinners into the freezer and left it for the next person to deal with. only — the next person turned out to be himself.

one month. well, that eliminates the possibility of blood-related brotherhood entirely. thirty days and they had moved in with each other already? pretty fast— then again, perhaps noah wasn't one to judge.

but the charade is pulled away like a stunfisk underneath his feet. the skin on his cheeks warm like hot slices of slapped salami.

"oh— yeah! yeah, i am. i think." noah says. "we've bumped into each other a bunch of times." much like the microwave dinners toppling onto the kitchen floor.

the gym leader stumbles toward's the mess, hands eager to help. quickly, he squats to grab a box or two, eyes darting to the cartoon of an enthusiastic elekid dunking on a basketball hoop.

"oh shit, elekid cuisunes?" noah cranes his neck toward aaron, eyes bright. "are these greyson's? or yours?"

jeez, greyson is like a katamari character, sucking up whoever the hell he comes across into his friendship sphere. bumping into each other a bunch of times makes it sound like they've never properly hung out before. noah's attempt to bump into him again looks to be coming up short, but at least he gets to spend some time with the cooler, funnier, smarter, and, most importantly, sexier roommate at [ADDRESS REDACTED].

the conversation is punctuated with an avalanche of cardboard boxes spilling out of the freezer. aaron kneels down and begins collecting his fallen treasures into his arms with the delicate embrace of a father cradling his newborn child. somewhere above him, noah chimes in and aaron snaps his head up, eyes bright. "bro, you know elekid cuisines?!" a box slides off his arm and lands on the tile with a sad thunk. "they're mine — they're cheap as hell so i've been stocking up."

he spreads his hoard out on the kitchen table and stands there, motioning broadly with one arm. he looks like he's showing noah some psa graded pokemon cards, but instead it's just a grand variety of elekid cuisine flavors — including some questionable themed meals for holidays that have already come and gone earlier this year.

"ever have the goldeen sticks one?" he points to the box in question, its packaging nostalgically outdated. "i swore it was discontinued for the longest time but i found a couple a few weeks ago."

noah doesn't realize he's met the cooler roommate until the elekid cuisunes spill out like a druddigon's hoard. on his palette, childhood memories replay textures of breaded snacks. pudding skins.

"goldeen sticks? dude. i haven't had those in ages." rocket invasions had shoved its greedy hand into the pantry of his past too— but noah is thankful to have had this particular michelin experience, regardless. "those things don't expire ever, right? like it's best before."

the gym leader moves to the counter, eyes wide as he catalogues each box like gem and jewel. he brings his gaze, heavy from their insatiable surveying, to aaron.

"you hungry?"
