Martín del Mar is not the sort of man who cares for physical confrontation, or at least that’s what most people would think about him. But, most people don’t know what Mars is actually like beneath the façade that is Martín del Mar, so they could never guess things like the fact that he had once been trained to fight, or that back when he was a teenager this resulted in one too many of his classmates getting hurt because he used to have issues with controlling his anger.

He may act as if those things are beneath him now and he may think it too, but drunk as he is, floating in a strange mixture of amusement and annoyance, when the punch-like slap comes, it triggers something in him. Maybe blame the cheap beer. Maybe blame the ren-faire. Maybe blame angelo vestri.

”What the fuck, Vestri.” While there’s an obvious hint of annoyance, he doesn’t look or sound particularly offended, especially not with the way that smirk of his turns into a grin just as he regains his stance. Shoulders roll and it is then when the Meowth jumps off him and onto the now empty chair.

”And here I was planning to have some fancy mediaeval duel with you or some shit. It would have been hilarious.”

So much for that.

Instead of wooden blades and an ’en garde’, what Angelo soon gets is a shove; seemingly light and harmless at first, and yet potentially strong enough to push him onto the ever so flimsy wooden table where dice and coins now lay abandoned.

But as his spine hits the edge of the table, dice and coins and empty drinks clattering from the force, all Mars receives is silence and a bewildered – and slightly amused – pinch of his brow.[break][break]

“Did… Did you just push me?” He asks slowly, fingertips hitting the surface of the sticky table to push himself back up to full height. And sneaking a couple of golden disks slyly into his pocket behind his back, while he’s at it. [break][break]

Whatever livewire, tipsy craving for adrenaline and excitement escapes out on a wheeze, followed by a hearty bellow that has Angelo leaning back against the grubby bar table. Supporting his aching ribs from laughter, as opposed to a set of knuckles to the kidney. [break][break]

“That was... Holy shit.” Somehow, a smarmy little smirk still manifests. Tongue always itching for the last word. “Is that the secret art of the Fat Cat? Or are we fuckin’ five years old in the playground, Del Mar?”

What had even started this?

Something about Angelo trying to cheat… Something about coins... Something about pride…

It’s all rather hazy in Mars’ mind, the fog produced by drinking too much cheap beer being all too heavy despite all the other effects alcohol seems to have had. Maybe it could be called ironic. Or, maybe Mars just doesn’t care enough.

Had he been looking for a fight? Had Angelo somehow done something that got on his nerves? Was he just bored and looking for a way to make this whole ren-faire experience at least a little more interesting? It couldn't just have been about the coins, right?

In the end, it’s likely not even Mars would be able to tell, because when the other starts laughing, it’s after trying to hold back for a few seconds that he joins in as well.

”Oh, fuck off! I don’t even wanna imagine how annoying you were at five.” Insults are brushed off as mere jest, a grin illuminating his expression while an arm is soon wrapped around the other’s shoulders – almost a hug, but with a little too much strength to be as much. Probably closer to a playful chokehold, if anything.

”Come on, let’s go grab another drink somewhere else. Looks like we might be getting kicked out of here.”

Judging by the look on the bartender’s face, that’s likely the case, but as should only be expected of Mars, he couldn’t care less. He just smirks at Angelo, speaking those wonderful words that so often solve all of his problem:

”I’ll pay.”
