The last time Mars and Cian had properly talked about his job as a trainer, a small eternity ago back a Mars’ own office at the POG Bank headquarters, Cian had mentioned how he disliked battling – how he hated it, even. A lot had been different back then, and even at the time it had been obvious that there were other reasons that lead to those words, but still, in his mind, Mars can’t help but wonder if this is really what Cian wants.

The answer comes in the way he chuckles.

In the way he says he’s looking forward to it, even if he’s dismissive about it.

”Babe, minor league or not, this is huge. You should be proud, I bet it wasn’t easy to do.”

He smiles, and even when he lets go, he still holds his hand.

”I can’t believe you didn’t tell me sooner, you’re paying for that one.”

Obviously, he’s joking, but the smile still shifts into a playful smirk.

it wasn't all that easy to achieve, honestly, but a part of him continues to wonder if it's only because of his connection to alex that secured him the position. it sure helped with securing the gym.

at the joke, he chuckles, shrugging as he continues to tease.

he nods after.

then takes a step away from mars, approaching the space around them.

in all honesty, mars could wipe cian's SANDSTORM team with ease, which is part of the reason why he had decided to challenge him now instead of later.

less chances to get countered, even if mars is likely carrying his strongest on him.

All teasing aside, his words are somewhat true: there’s no way Mars could be prepared to have a proper double battle. Not in the way he would like when it comes to challenging gyms, at least, since Mars will always be the sort of person to meticulously prepare for such things. And yet, a battle may just be exactly what he needs, and there’s no denying that there’s something exciting about the idea of battling against Cian.

After choosing two pokéballs, the pokémon Mars calls onto the arena are two that could easily be considered staples in his team: Blastoise and Starmie. Of course, Cian has probably never actually seen them in a proper battle, so once again, his words are no lie… There may just be some surprises.

as soon as politoed emerges from his pokeball, clouds start to gather overhead, and thunder soon cracks, summoning the rain from his DRIZZLE.

Loving talk, of course. He even blows Cian a kiss. Yet, encouraging as the comment may indeed be, it does also pose a challenge, because the moment Cian’s pokémon are called out onto the arena, it becomes all too obvious that he came prepared for this – that he wanted to catch him by surprise and thus at a disadvantage. Adorable.

A chuckle, for it’s not like Mars minds a little rain. After all, how many times has he battled under raindrops produced by his own pokémon? It sure beats battling in a SANDSTORM, even if being in one right now would have sure made things look much better for him.

At least it’s pokémon he’s familiar with, and as per usual, Mars’ confidence doesn’t waver that easily.

Just like that, targets are calmly assigned, and his pokémon are quick to act. The cannons at the Blastoise’s back charge up with pale light, and while they do, the Starmie jumps, spinning in the air. A powerful ICE BEAM is aimed at the EleFish Pokémon, while the periwinkle body of the starfish releases a wave of electricity in the Politoed’s direction – a THUNDER WAVE that is sure to PARALYZE anything it touches.

and so, the battle commences.

eelektross' typing made her relatively indifferent to the ICE BEAM that strikes her. she shudders, feeling cold all of a sudden. but as rain continues to pour overhead, it allows for a simple THUNDER to strike right down at the starmie.

ew, look at that stinky THUNDER WAVE! politoed does a 'yuck' expression before clapping his hands together in an EARTH POWER, which causes a heavy clump of dirt to rise to take the electric-attack for him. he pokes his head around, smiling widely.

However, aren’t there many ways to express things like those? Mars has doubts that have led him to stop himself from saying those words out loud, but even things as simple as these show him that Cian does actually care for him. Out of all people, he’s the first to challenge him, even if it all comes with silly attempts at provoking him...

”Aren’t gym leaders supposed to be all nice and encouraging to their challengers, babe? Come on, I want the full minor gym experience here. Take it as practice.”

He winks, a hand running through increasingly wet brunette hair. And, as they have this conversation, the battle ensues among the pokémon. Starmie may not be the fastest pokémon out there, but she is smart, and in order to avoid the THUNDER coming her way, a highly pressurized jet of SCALDING hot water is used to propel herself away. The Blastoise, on the other hand, seems to retreat into her shell, and when she emerges a few seconds later, it’s the glow of SHELL SMASH that surrounds her.

For a moment, Mars watches without saying a word, wondering if maybe he should just let his pokémon take it easy with this battle. They’re both competitive, and he knows as much, so won’t someone’s feelings inevitably be hurt if they both try hard? Cian already set all this up for him to lose, so wouldn't he be pissed if Mars won?

mars could likely take on any of the major league circuit and come out victorious. the minor league is meant to be a stepping stone for trainers to help them move onto the major league, so it's likely he'll end up facing weaker trainers.

which is why it doesn't make sense for him to take it easy on mars.

While his words come with a smirk, the question is an honest one, because Mars has never been one to have much interest in battling. His pokémon are well trained and can hold their ground in a fight, but not once did he consider actually going out there and challenging gyms. Not until the tournament, that is. Not until he considered that there might be other benefits to it other than a shiny badge.

In this case, the benefit is doing something Cian loves, and getting to see him enjoying himself as the proud leader of his minor gym. It makes Mars smile… Even if at the same time his Starmie takes a painful THUNDER.

”Alright, if that’s what you want.”

It’s at this point that Mars takes off his jacket, reaching for the necklace he always seems to wear; from it hang two mismatched rings as if pendants, and this time, also the key stone that is usually worn in a much more obvious fashion. The smile remains when meeting Cian’s gaze, and the key stone glows as if to indicate what’s obviously coming next.

Distracted by the glow of its own mega stone and thus completely ignoring the Politoed’s attempt at a SWAGGER, the Blastoise roars, and MEGA EVOLUTION doesn’t come in its usual form. For as good of an actor as Cian can be sometimes, he really sucks at it when he’s mad. Mars does no more than stare at him, an eyebrow inevitably raising at the attempt at faking indifference. Isn’t that rather unfair? Cian had set this up so he would lose, he had told him to try his best, and now he’s annoyed that Mars is actually putting an effort? Did Cian expect to wipe the floor with his team? To humiliate him? Is that what he wanted? How is that supposed to make Mars feel?

it really is unfair and selfish, but cian doesn't realize it in the moment.

the ICE BEAM flies only to find politoed instead of the eelektross. the little frog leaps in front of the way, striking a pose as he holds up two fingers before yelping at the pain from the attack.

and in return, eelektross slithers in front of the POWER GEM, tanking it with her slimey body before she snarls another THUNDER at the blastoise.

rain continues to pour, dampening their moods.
