Tight-lipped, Roman followed his father down the streets of Fallarbor Town to Route 114. His emerald eyes fixated on the man's back like it had a kick me sign stapled to it. Dad hadn't said what they'd be doing, and Roman didn't bother to ask. [break][break]

Frankly, he didn't care. He didn't want to be doing anything in the first place. If Roman had it his way, he'd be in his bedroom with the door shut, ignoring the world and trying to erase what he'd done to Jayden from his memory. "Jayden..." a sharp pang stabbed at his chest, and Roman winced. [break][break]

A distraction, he needed a distraction. [break][break]

"Mom's making me work the garden now." muttered Roman lowly. "I hate it." he added a moment later.

he walked ahead, but his kubfu stayed behind a little bit—for a reason.

bo had willed the incident with jayden to the back of his mind. after roman’s running away; all the worry and pain he’d seen in willow atkins … it had been a lot, but he was still on a mission to break through. every day, he was making an effort. today would be especially special. he only hoped that roman might appreciate it. so far, the way he trailed behind out of sight was both nerve-wracking and slightly discouraging, but his smile remained. since roman had been back, his optimism had returned.
he smirked at the mention of the garden.

“ah, c'mon. working in the garden’s not so bad.” he’d been doing it for two years, and he’d been knocked unconscious several times now. sometimes, it wasn’t fun at all. but, usually, it was nice—mainly because he got to spend time with her. “ya been sprayed by a gloom yet?”

"It's horrible." he affirmed. Roman had neither the gentle touch nor the patience needed for gardening. "All I wanna do is throw that shovel." and hit one of those Gloom in their faces.[break][break]

Looking over his shoulder, he stared at the Kubfu. A frown that might as well have been his natural state at this point formed.[break][break]

"He's here to make sure I don't run away again, isn't he?" Roman's eyes made their way back to his father's shoulder.

bo shook his head, but grinned and chuckled behind the cover of his own back. hard work built character right? or maybe that was just something they told poor people… either way, he felt that in this case, it fit.

the kubfu’s default, tough looking scowl met the boy’s frown briefly before breaking eye contact and looking off ahead again, as though he was unconcerned.

when roman asked about the bear’s presence, bo's grin faltered.

fuck yeah, he is, stabby mcshortstack.

“nah. kubfu’s here because we’re catching pokémon today.”

he didn’t look down when roman strode up to his side, only smirking at his success. he reached into his pocket and pulled out an empty pokeball before holding it towards roman.

“here. hold on to this.”

as if on que, there was a rustling in the tall grass off to their side.

“you got po with you, right? i want you to use him. kubfu’s back-up.” actually, he probably should’ve checked before they’d left. oops.

He took the Poke Ball and held it tightly in his hand. This was strange. Roman's sure that the other shoe is going to drop at some point. Until then, he'll play along. [break][break]

"Um, yeah." [break][break]

Roman reached for the puppy's ball and released him. A hyperactive bundle of joy, Po barked and bound to Boruta's side. His tiny paws pressed against the older male's leg. [break][break]

"Po." spoke Roman firmly. Reluctantly, the puppy moved back to Roman's side. Roman then glanced to the grass and the Pokemon that came tumbling out. [break][break]

“hey po,” he greeted with a smile, and bent to put a hand into the puppy’s fur when he stood against his leg.

his smile only grew at the commanding tone in his son’s voice. gold eyes watched the dog run over to position. had they been practicing?

the grapploct showed itself out of a leaf pile on the grass, and he looked up. kubfu got into stance protectively, but he put out a hand to stop the combative little bear.

bo spoke softly, so as not to startle to grapploct.

“this is gonna be a hard battle. grapploct are resistant to rock-type moves, but you have the element of surprise on your side. does po know any other type of moves yet? something that’ll hit it?”

Shit, they were going to do this. Roman can hardly believe his ears the more dad explained. He'd been sure a last-minute gotcha was waiting for him. The cap on his excitement slowly lifted, and for a moment, Roman almost felt like smiling. He doesn't mind you, but it's clear something's changed as he stepped forward.[break][break]

"Gapploct? I've never seen one of those before." but dad spoke like he knew all about them. Roman shouldn't be surprised - he was a ranger. Bo probably met a ton of Pokemon Roman hadn't seen.[break][break]

That's honestly kinda cool. [break][break]

Roman looked from Po to the Grapploct. "Of course he does. After we trounced those old bastards at the beach, I taught em an awesome attack." Invoking the spirit of every smug anime kid that came before him, he swiped his finger underneath his nose and grinned. [break][break]

"Po, show my dad your power and hit em with Hyper Voice." [break][break]

Rockruff growled, the low rumble of his throat rising in decibels as he opened his mouth and unleashed a powerful blast of sonic energy outward. [break][break]

Still distracted by the Zigzagoon, Grapploct wouldn't know what hit em.

he glanced over from the grapploct, to his son and beamed. though roman wasn’t smiling outwardly, bo could see the confidence increase in him. the will to engage, and not shrug off his attempt at bonding. it was exciting.

”they’re pretty cool. they call ‘em the jujutsu pokémon. they’ve given me a run for my money before.”

’trounced those old bastards.’ for once, bo said nothing, because he realized he was not going to win this battle. ever. he merely shook his head, resigning to the fact that his son was an asshole, and there was little he could do about it.

when roman commanded the attack, bo covered his ears. when they fell again, he was grinning.

”nice! stay on it!”

his kubfu stood by still, with attention razor-sharp and looking ready to step in if need be.

Jujutsu Pokemon? Roman didn't know what jujutsu meant, but it sounded hella awesome. He definitely wanted to catch it now. [break][break]

Between Po's attack landing and the praise from his dad, Roman couldn't help but smile. He wasn't sure where the feeling came from, but he wanted to impress his dad.[break][break]

Grapploct spun around to face his assailants. A puppy and a little boy? The nerve of the pair to interrupt a fight against a more challenging opponent. He'd deal with them quickly. The Grapploct's tentacles swelled, Bulking-Up.[break][break]

"Hit em again, Po!"[break][break]

Another Hyper Voice, but this one expected. Grapploct leaped to the right, avoiding the attack. Roman frowned.[break][break]

"Hey! That's not fucking fair."
