The rock cracks under the strength of her kick, and Skyler leans forward to study what's left of it. Dust is blown away to reveal the barest sketch of a millenia-old creature, preserved in stone. If she squinted enough, the captain thinks, she might even be able to see what could've passed for a fin.

Good enough.

Lodged precariously into a large crevice a few feet off the ground, Skyler shifts position and hisses when a sharp rock digs into her back.

Holding back a curse, she nods at Libra to continue cutting past the layers of rock, bladed arms whistling sharply through the stagnant air.

Beneath her is her diving equipment, its oxygen tank still at full capacity. Svernos stands guard at the foot on the crevice, amber eyes roaming the darkness for any intruders. And below her, under the craggy surface of rock and dust, ghostly tendrils reach out.

Diving.

Out of all hobbies people might expect a rich businessman to enjoy, diving probably ranks very low on the list, and yet it is the one Mars is most fond of – the one he enjoys the most, and also the one he finds most relaxing of all.

These days, when so many concerns haunt his thoughts and steal away his time, diving down to a cave deep beneath the waves may be exactly what he needs. A relaxing little excursion of his own. One to a place where he obviously expects to be alone.

Except that he’s not, and he doesn’t need to walk all that far through the cavern to realize as much. At the sight of the pokémon and their trainer, he pauses at a safe distance, setting down a partially-empty oxygen tank.

”Huh… Well, this is an interesting coincidence.”
[break][break]
Naturally, as can only be expected of Mars, he smiles, all of his suspicions as well hidden as his own motives to be here. Ever so casual despite being in an underwater cave, of all places.

Svernos' growl is a low, rumbling thing that draws Skyler's attention away from the carvings in the rock. Unlike Mars' more composed reaction, the captain doesn't bother hiding the tensing of her muscles, nor the way her head whips to the approaching figure, silver eyes flashing hostility.

The knife strapped to her leg would do her no good, and is by far less intimidating than either the Garchomp or the Kabutops by her side - but her fingers instinctually drift to hover over its blade nevertheless.

She doesn't recognize the voice at first, having only heard it once during a late night conversation at the Lavaridge Hot Springs. Only when the nearby lamp illuminates Mars' features does Sky relax somewhat.

"Stand down, Svernos."

A lashing tail ceases its restless movement at the command, though Svernos' glare remains focused on what she perceives to be an intruder. Skyler, on the other hand, tilts her head curiously.

"Are you stalking me, rich boy?"

In the depths of the cave, reaching tendrils creep up on an unsuspecting victim. Deprived of sustenance due to Mars' friendly status, Dhelmise finds another outlet for its hunger: wrapping the Octillery in its ghostly embrace until it stops struggling. Later, it would present the fainted octopus to Skyler, should its trainer want to keep it.

The hostility of the captain and her pokémon is not missed, but if there’s any tension or discomfort that arises because of it, it all remains well-hidden behind that perfect smile of his. The truth is that he’s alert, that his guard has been up from the very beginning, but life has taught Mars to be good at hiding such things.

”Ha! Why would I do that? Relax, Captain, I was just going for a dive, it’s a hobby of mine.”
[break][break]
Chuckling, he lifts his hands just so slightly as if to indicate he means no harm, and just as he does this, his attention is stolen away by the pokémon that hurriedly emerges from the depths of the cavern as if terrified (probably of Skyler’s own Dhelmise, if we’re being honest here). Pebbles shift loudly under its careless waddling, and in its distressed state, it manages to trip and end up crashing right against the shell of the Blastoise that stands near Mars.

Calliope turns to look at it, displeased, and watching the scene, Mars can’t help but sigh. ”Relax, Calliope, it’s just a Psyduck.” His smile remains in a faint manner, and approaching, he crouches down by the wild pokémon’s side.

”You really should watch your step there.”
[break][break]
A pokéball is pressed against the Psyduck’s forehead – never one to miss a chance.

Loose rocks tumble down as Skyler makes her way out of the crevice she'd wedged herself into.

Mars' casual cheer is met with a quirked eyebrow and a brief flash of teeth too sharp to be an attempt at politeness. Nevertheless her approach is amiccable enough, wide steps boldly eating up the space between the two of them.

"Sorry about earlier. Didn't think I'd find anyone down here." No one except for the occasional cutthroat treasure hunter, that is. "And last time I did I was nearly stabbed in the leg. Fun times."

The pocket of light they're standing in flickers briefly, prompting Skyler to glance over her shoulder. Between one blink and the next, darkness takes the shape of a colossal anchor. It stands utterly silent and unmoving except for a small stretch of seaweed that wraps itself around Skyler's leg.

Dhelmise drops the unconscious bodies of a Lapras and an Octillery at the captain's feet, as if it were making an offering.

She wastes no time before catching them both.

”Stabbed, huh? Sounds like quite the story.” For some reason, hearing that someone would want to stab skyler dross isn’t all that surprising, just how he wouldn’t be surprised to hear she made them pay for it in full for daring to even try it. In fact, Mars would almost be willing to bet that that’s exactly what happened.

Light flickers and her Dhelmise appears with offerings for her; an Octillery and a Lapras that had no doubt been swiftly dealt with by the ghostly anchor. Is that what the Psyduck had been running from?
[break][break]
An eyebrow is raised, but despite being alert, Mars doesn’t seem to mind the anchor’s presence – perhaps thanks to being all too familiar with his own. ”Nice Dhelmise. Also, to be fair, I really didn’t expect to run into anyone here… It’s not exactly the most well known tourist spot, is it?”

While they talk, his Blastoise is distracted by the sight of a much similar yet much different pokémon, the Carracosta seeming to size up its fellow turtle. To its detriment, of course, because as soon as it shoots a HYDRO PUMP, this is matched by a much more powerful HYDRO CANNON on part of the Blastoise, making the Carracosta stumble back against the rock.

It’s then when Mars throws a pokéball.

"It's the perfect spot to get away from people, if you don't mind running into trouble." The sheated blade strapped to her leg seems to tell its own tale, along with a wry grin of her own.

"Then again, what would the fun be otherwise?"

Skyler had come to this place multiple times before, so she's fairly familiar with its dangers - which makes Mars' presence here all the more curious. When Skyler had met him she'd lazily pinned him as one of 'em rich boys who strutted around the place as if they owned it, which - he probably does, let's be real.

But now she's forced to reevaluate him. She doesn't even bother to hide this fact, peering at the contours of his face as if her stare could peel back the layers to what hid beneath. Fortunately for the banker, Skyler's also intrisically bad at this.

And her curiously only lingers so long on the surface before something else calls her attention.

She won't forget it though.

Deeper into the complex system of underwater caves, Libra and a wild Kingler seem to be facing off. The crab had probably wandered too close to their location, and Libra had taken upon herself to defend their territory. A swift piercing blade ends the battle, and Skyler seizes the opportunity to catch the Kingler.

"So, is this hobby one of you rich folk things or just a Mars thing?"

Mars would argue that he’s no thrill seeker, but he knows well that that’s a blatant lie. He may prefer to act calm and composed, but the truth is that trouble finds him almost just as often as he makes his own. Things like those can be exciting, and so it’s with a grin that almost perfectly mirrors that of the captain that he gives his response:

Perfect if someone were to do tours of the cavern.

Too bad that with the amount of apparently aggressive wild pokémon running around, that would make for a risky business opportunity and potentially one too many liability lawsuits – something which almost seems proven by the way Skyler’s pokémon fight against a Kingler.

”Rich folk things, huh? Nah, most of my rich friends would hate a place like this.” It’s said with complete honesty, chuckling at his own words because the idea of people like those hanging out at an underwater cave is ever too amusing. ”I learned to dive when I was a kid. I guess you could call it a lifelong passion or something.”

Not even diving itself, but the sea. Too bad the details of that are way too personal.

"Or something." Her voice was dry, accompanied by eyebrows raised in a disbelieving arch. It was one thing to dive into the crystalline Hoennian shallows where sunlight-dappled corals and colorful water pokemon made their home. It was a whole other matter to dive into the lightless depths, alone, as a way to unwind from everyday stresses.

But it wasn't Skyler who was going to tell Mars what he could or couldn't do. His Blastoise certainly seemed capable enough - and, honestly, it was no skin off her back if trouble found him.

She might rethink this later once she learned of Mars and Angelo's business deals, however.

"You grew up by the sea, then?" Skyler could relate, having found her passion for the ocean early in her childhood, amid shallow waves and an awestruck gaze that had never looked back since.

Behind her, Libra and Svernos started packing most of the equipment she'd brought at a small motion of her fingers, though her silver gaze remained steadfast on the young man.

While places like these can come with their fair share of dangers, they also do come with certain benefits. Solitude is generally one of them (although apparently not in this case), and so are enjoyable moments that would perhaps be rare anywhere else…

Out of the water comes a Wartortle, approaching with swagger and pride. It stares up at the Blastoise, huffing as if it were certain it could beat her up in a fight. In contrast, Calliope gives it a stern look, almost as if saying “don’t you try it”, but of course the Wartortle does…

It charges with AQUA TAIL, and it soon finds itself being grabbed by said tail and hanging upside down.
[break][break]
Mars chuckles at the sight, his attention soon returning to Skyler despite the smaller turtle’s struggles to get free. ”Yeah, I did. My dad used to take me sailing all the time… I’m guessing you did too?”

She must really love the sea in order to be captain of a ship, no? It's the obvious assumption.
