Rapidash has many open wounds, all of them painful and inflamed.[break][break]

Stormy's hands are all over his head, blocking his vision so that he won't struggle against her. He's tense, his muscles taut with rage and defiance. He wants to fight, even though he can't stand up.[break][break]

The Charizard lets up as Stormy knocks him aside. Her focus is on her fallen companion, her best friend. [break][break]

"You shouldn't allow your Pokemon to become so enraged in battle. This was practice, not a war."[break][break]

Her voice is thick with fury and emotion. She tries to choke it down, but the tear stains on her face suggest its too late for that. Rapidash breaths slowly, his chest rising and falling with small shudders.[break][break]

Fernando releases a Slowking around the same time she releases her Chansey. Both Pokemon spring to action, tackling the Rapidash in comforting waves of HEAL PULSE. Slowly but surely the combined efforts seem to be stitching together the worst of his wounds.[break][break]

Stormy looks up at Fernando as the man approaches. He's indifferent, uncaring. Why had she thought he would ever change? [break][break]

Her hands are shaking, and no amount of energy can stop that. Her own breathing is rapid and shallow as waves of panic and stress take control. She's sobbing, staring down at her hands, at the blood on her hands from Rapidash's wounds. The stains seep into her jacket but she doesn't move. She's locked in her own nightmare of terror, recounting the horrors of the war she'd endured. The war she's facing now.[break][break]

the slowking doesn't let up but it's an arduous process. the greater the exposure the more effective the treatment. thankfully, their bickering will grant the slowking an ample opportunity to play doctor. it works in tandem with her chansey to alleviate whatever pain the rapidash may face. the wounds start to close.

"you're a trainer and responsible for your pokemon. you should know when to tell it to stand down. that's what pokeballs are for. pokemon fight on our behalf and we provide them the safety of being able to be recalled at a moment's notice."

his eyes narrow. he scolds her like a kid and she's reduced to tears. how pathetic. she truly is a child.

"this is only a fraction of the difficulties a gym leader must face and overcome. when war comes at our doorstep there will be no pause. the enemy will not halt and offer to heal your pokemon. they will not relent, as we saw in slateport, and that is why we must be ready."

It's the fact that everything Fernando is saying makes sense that stops her from lashing out again. It's not his fault directly that she's afraid. It's her own.[break][break]

She hadn't even thought about returning Rapidash, she had assumed that he would stop on his own, or that the Charizard would let up. She had been gravely mistaken, and her Rapidash was the victim of her own stupidity and naivety.[break][break]

Chansey barely looks at Slowking, simply focusing her abilities on easing the pain of her friend. It causes a bead of sweat to appear on her plush pink form, the mental strain of this task becoming clear.[break][break]

With a thumb, Stormy wipes away her tears angrily. How dare she succumb to her emotions in front of a man as ruthless as he. She was only proving his point that she was a child, incapable of accomplishing meager tasks.[break][break]

Once the majority of Rapidash's wounds have closed and healed, she returns him to his capsule. She soon returns Chansey as well, clicking both balls back onto her side.[break][break]

Another swipe under her eyes get rid of the remaining tears, and she sighs.[break][break]

"You're right. You're always right."[break][break]

She bites her lip, hard. Her hands haven't stopped shaking, her breathing hasn't steadied. She looks down at the blood on her clothes, the blood on the battlefield. [break][break]

"I'm afraid."[break][break]

he doesn't discount her assessment even if it comes off as patronizing. so far, between their various encounters, he's yet to be wrong. that's the type of precision he imposes on himself - never answer, never speak without knowing with absolute certainty.

"that's ok. that's who you are. there's nothing wrong with that."

his words are not spoken with a gentle tone that conveys comfort. no, fernando never breaks from his impartialness. they're stated as facts and should be treated as such. to hold herself to a higher standard will do nothing but damage herself. he won't advise her toward getting stronger. that's something she has to come to on her own.

"but a gym leader is one who faces their fears and reacts accordingly. i cannot succeed the position to someone who clams up when they make a critical mistake."

her pokemon return and fernando does the same. only his charizard remains, frowning, awkwardly observing the tension that settles between both humans. it seems remorseful but only because it doesn't know any better.

"you are not capable of being lavaridge's gym leader. not as you are now. not in my opinion. you can try and sway the others but until you rectify this behavior then my answer will be the same as before."

Had those words come out of anyone else's mouth, they would have been seen as comforting. For some reason, Stormy doesn't get that sort of vibe. The way he laces his words together almost sounds like contempt, like an insult. That it was okay for her to be weak, but then to stay the fuck out of his way and stop trying to be better because it wouldn't work - she was useless.[break][break]

Stormy doesn't look at him, she can't bring herself to. It isn't really him that she's furious with this time, but his presence just doesn't help. He's patronizing, malicious, cruel. He displays no emotion other than an irritation for her presence, and she can't stand that.[break][break]

"I.. I understand. Please excuse me."[break][break]

She'd had enough. She needs space to breathe, to control her emotions, to get a clear head. It's impossible to do that under the scrutiny of her brother. She needs time to think, to plan. He's right. At this stage, she is absolutely incapable of being a gym leader. [break][break]

The sight of blood makes her knees fall out from under her, makes her heart pound with terror. She hasn't been able to shake the nightmares, she hasn't been able to conquer her fear. Losing Kanto broke her.[break][break]

Her gaze shifts to the Charizard. His remorse is not missed, but Stormy doesn't know how to respond. This is the first time she's encountered a Pokemon so violent, specifically a Pokemon she considered capable of kindness.[break][break]

The war had shown her terror and hatred. She had seen many Pokemon die. But this instance was vastly different to her. She hadn't expected the animosity she had just seen from Charizard.[break][break]

Stormy dips her head respectfully toward Fernando before she takes her leave. There's nothing more she has to say to him, and she will make her way to the infirmary as quickly as she can.[break][break]

fernando allows her to leave unhindered. she's an adult in age but a child at heart - not his responsibility. with her gone, he can return his pokemon without consequence.

"cila, open up my schedule again."

the beep boop that follows confirms that his artificial assistant registers the command. a meeting with cait alfric is looming on his online calendar and he heads off in the direction to meet her. like he thought, the battle hadn't lasted more then a few minutes. perhaps this will finally put her in her place.
