they watched from the trees, listening to ultrasonic frequencies radiating out in waves through the kilohertz range. others bats would hear it clearly for miles. however, to most ears, it was utterly silent in the dark except for the crunch of lulu’s boots on the path.

she hardly noticed company, never expecting anyone out this late. the metal contraption vibrated lightly in her hand, and her eyes remained on the sky, where several of her cauldron circled above.

it's not matias that makes an appearance first, sadly.

a wild pangoro jumps out of the bushes, throwing an ARM THRUST at the unsuspecting Lulu Flint. thankfully, virizion's there to save her with a PROTECT.

they show up a second after, and marowak springs into action with a BONE RUSH that knocks the pangoro down to a knee. virizion's there to end the battle with MAGICAL LEAVES that surround the dark-type.

a pokeball follows.

"oh. hello there."

lulu caught the shape of the bear across the ground under moonlight, and ducked. a few of the bats dove for the pangoro, and a shadow from a nearby tree shifted across the ground. however, it returned to normal when lulu was shielded by another force.

from the cover of night, darkrai watched virizion carefully.

she looked up, surprised to see it there as well. and... one of the elite four?

she blinked.

"hello, matias silph."

matias silph: elite four and military captain.

he blinks, recognition never coming to him even if she looks familiar.

"have we met before?"

a small dedenne scrambles out of the bush and rushes towards matias, keen to PLAY ROUGH with him. it tackles his leg, but matias is quick to scoop it up and into his arms which seem massive compared to it.

had they met before? unfortunately. poor solrock. it hadn’t seen another battle since.

“maybe.”

a woobat descended to perch atop her head and smile with pointy teeth, and they both watched as matias went full ranger, scooping an aggressive rat right out of its charge and into his arms.

oh. he seemed likable, didn’t he?

“that's a cute trick.”

"thanks. isn't he cute?"

with dedenne still in his arms, he tilts it over towards her so she could get a better look. the electric-type nuzzles closer against matias' chest, settling comfortably into his arms.

"what would you name him?"

lulu regarded the dedenne with a neutral expression.

”adorable.”

she didn’t typically name her pokemon, and shrugged at the question. ”i dunno.” then, an idea popped into her head. ”temp.” for Tempest Quinn , who had named his umbreon after her.

the smell of a weezing drew her attention. how had she ever put up with that before? she turned it in its direction, the sight drawing a pang of memories which she had not experienced in some time. she stared a moment, along with the woobat still perched on her head, but turning her attention back to matias and his dedenne.

though he's never met Tempest Quinn in person, the man's reputation has reached him: fishie lover.

something stinks in the near distance, and he turns to meet the sight of a stunky. as adorable as it is, the stench it produces is foul, and it's for that reason that marowak's BONE RUSH knocks it over and into a pokeball.

"stinky. anyways, wanna go for a walk?"

”yeah.” like the gym leader.

her nose wrinkled as a new stench entered her nostrils, unlike that of the weezing. why was route 123 so smelly?

she was glad when the stunky disappeared into his pokéball.

at his offer, she didn’t immediately respond. she didn’t want to, but she didn’t necessarily not want to, either, for whatever reason. curiosity, maybe.
