The lull of the ocean comes in the company of the purr of a motor and of countless Wingull’s cries, the waters before them being ever too dark despite flowing so near to land. Out here, in Route 126, the waters feel as if eternally deep, and in the calm of slack tide, it’s the perfect time to dive down to the entrance to Sootopolis City.

Aid.

Relief efforts.

Supplies for the people who were affected by the terrible events that took place when Sootopolis was occupied.

Just as he had once promised amaryllis karneva, this is what some of the cargo is meant to hold, although Mars’ own reasons to be out here himself may be much different. After all, given his role in Team Rocket, there’s importance in being personally familiar with the few transport routes in and out of the city (they can’t just move the submarine for everything, can they?) and in knowing just how viable they are, but of course, this is not something those who volunteered to help with the relief efforts need to know.

There wasn’t many things the scarred man feared in life. He was, theoretically, a fearless man. After all, he survived many things in his lifetime so far. A house fire, mine cave ins, legendary’s destructive paths, and many many more. The only exceptions to this ruling was two things. One, was his pokemon life. Despite his rough and tough exterior, the man cared deeply for his creature’s and the feared them losing their life for him was something he always tried to avoid. Even to this day, guilt pained him for Avias who died fighting the necrozma last year. He would never forgive himself for forcing her to fight a battle she couldn’t win. The other, was one he has always tried to over come but seems to never go away.

The man swallowed hard, attempting to get rid of the thump that formed in his throat. Despite his cool and calm presents, anxiety filled him. Even as the boat came to a rest and be began to prepare for the dive, he couldn’t shake the feeling of death coming to take him. His mind was racing, heart throbbing to match his tension. Maverick constantly tried to remind himself that there was nothing to fear, but it wasn’t working. Warm gaze lifted to the man who was his dive partner, his gaze hard despite the very faint smile in return to his. “I do, but not much.”

His gaze shifted down to the deep ocean water, spotting the school of Wishiwashi before he spotted his own diving pokemon’s shadow. “Not gunna lie, man,” he started, swallowing hard once again but still hiding his ever growing panic, “I’m a little nervous.” A little, was an understatement. Of course, the trainer did his best to hide this behind very little expression cues and deep dark flat tone. The shardepo broke the surface of the water, meeting his trainer gaze. Luckily, the man was smart enough to bring more than one water type in case things do arise. The man tugged at his pendant around his neck, moving it to be shoved into his shirt before his gaze returned to his. “The name is Maverick by the way.”

A fear of the deep.

Of water. Of diving. Of what mysteries lurk in the ocean. Of whatever it is that pushes certain people to be afraid when it comes to such things. Mars has never understood it, nor has he ever tried to understand, for in his mind there’s no conceivable world where the sea would be something to fear. On the contrary, it brings comfort and a cherished sense of familiarity. It’s a place that he adores, and diving will always be an activity he finds both relaxing and enjoyable.

These are the reasons why the pokémon he chose to bring with him for this task are not ones he intends on relying on for safety, but ones he always loves to swim next to when he dives. And, these are also the reasons why he smiles so very easily when the other man expresses his concern, even going as far as giving him a pat on the back.

”Hey, don’t worry about it. You’ll have your pokémon down there to help you, and if anything, I’ll be down there too.” Not like Mars cares for the safety of a stranger or for actually helping them at all, but it’s what a nice person would say, and Martín del Mar is supposed to be a nice person, no? At least according to that public image he endlessly works towards building.

”Nice to meet you, Maverick. I’m Martín, but feel free to call me M–.”

It’s when he introduces himself to his diving companion that he finally gets a proper look at him, and the moment he does there’s an immediate pause, for from his neck hangs a pendant with a charm that seems all too familiar for reasons Mars can’t quite put a finger on – as if he has seen it somewhere before.

"Oh. Can I ask where you got that pendant? It's nice."

THE COUNTDOWN BEGINS

NOTHING HAPPENS. When Maverick shoves the neckless into his shirt, Mars catches a quick gleam. It appears to be a plain charm, unmarked, fitting in the palm of his gaze. Their memories of their previous encounters remain suppressed.

What Maverick sees is the same letter he’s always seen. Unfortunately, he’s unable to remember how he found it. A forgotten paradox…

The pat on the back wasn’t very reassuring for a moment. In fact, it only put him on edge more. It was only because for a very brief moment, he thought this stranger was about to push him into the water like ‘get over it’ type a joke. Luckily, he didn’t though. He felt bad for judging the man so quickly, but it vanished just as quickly as it came to mind. He gulped, trying to force the lump in his throat away with no success. Instead, he let out a strange and uncomfortable stiff chuckle escape him in reaction to the man’s attempt to ease his tension. A very obvious uneasy small grin danced on his lips.

Warm gaze glared at the water as this man spoke, attempting to mentally prepare himself for not only to face his fears but the chill of the water. His mind was so focused on this, it took Maverick a second to realized that Martín just asked him a question. His gaze shifted back to the man to see if he was ready to dive, only notice he appeared to be waiting for a response. The scarred man blinked as if the man spoke a different language before his thoughts came too.

“Oh,” the man replied surprised, reaching to pull out the charm to show to the man, “This thing?” He let his own gaze fall to the charm in his hand, brows twisted in confusion at it. He still didn’t understand what it was or why he had found it. This whole thing was strange to him. “I found it in my garden one day,” he admitted, gaze lifted to Martin only to realizing that he probably didn’t seem like that type to own a garden and felt the need to explain, “I partnered with these others in hopes to get some rare resources from it.” Honestly, Maverick really wasn’t the Gardner type so that was true. “And one day, I got a notification that a wild pokemon was in there so I went to investigate it.” He paused again, letting his gaze flickered to the charm for a moment. “Instead, I found this thing.” Warm orbs shifted back to his dive partner, head gave a slight tilt. “Do you know what it is or what it does?”

Why is that feeling so prevalent in his life as of late?

Has he been here before? Has he done this before? Has he looked at a charm like this one? Has he met maverick noah ryder? All those memories from the first time he encountered these charms remain locked away in a dark and distant part of his mind, causing Mars to frown just so slightly as he attempts to remember something that doesn’t even seem to exist in the first place. But, something else does come…

The thought of Eris Halla asking him if he sees something in a charm not quite like this one.

The thought of Hideo Kino asking him a similar question while showing him a charm much alike the one hanging from Maverick’s pendant.

There’s no such thing as a coincidence.

”No, but I’ve met a couple of kids who have charms similar to that one.” Is it some sort of new fashion trend or something? But, both Maverick and Hideo mentioned just finding the charm out of nowhere…

Eris had been sure she saw an Unown letter, and Hideo had mentioned he heard something strange coming from his charm, yet to Mars this one looks as plain as the other two had. Still, why is there that feeling that he can’t shake off? Why does he keep looking at it as if something were just going to appear before them?

”Out of curiosity… Do you see something weird in it? The kids mentioned something like that, but you know… kids.” He shrugs as he looks at Maverick once more, acting like it’s no big deal, even if he actually means the question.

Upon asking Mars about his own charm, it would appear that Maverick wasn’t the only one who had or found this mysterious charm. Although he had spoken with Amor Rose about said charm, it was nice to know he wasn’t the only one who had one. How it got there or why it was there was still a complete mystery to the man. The same question still remained in his mind. Why him? Maverick had heard that some believe that this charms are relation to the trio of emotion, knowledge, and willpower. But, it was still a speculation and nothing has been proven.

A brow rose, warm gaze fell upon the charm once more. He examined it, trying to find what ever Mars wanted him to find. Yet after a minute or two of examining it, there was nothing new from when he first found it. Maverick’s gaze lifted, shoulders shrugging. “It has some kind of fancy hieroglyphic on it. That’s about it. I don’t know what it is or what it means.” The trainer then paused, suddenly realizing that Mars too must not see it this fancy engraving on the charm. Confusion took over his expression, offering to let him get a closer look without taking it off his neck. “Do you not see it?” Another question popped up. "Who are these other kids?"

To Mars’ knowledge, maverick noah ryder is the fifth person that he has encountered who happens to have one of those strange charms. There’s no way this is happening just by chance, right? All their stories seem to be the same: they found the charm one day at some unexpected place (usually a garden, apparently) and can see or hear something in it that nobody else seems capable of perceiving. Weird.

Why is this happening?

And, more importantly, why does he keep running into these people? How is he connected to all of this?

”Yeah, that sounds like what they said… I still don’t see anything.” No matter how hard he looks. So, it’s with a sigh that Mars looks away, turning towards the water and then looking past it – watching the crater within which rests Sootopolis City.

He knows Eris Halla has been looking for other people who may possess charms similar to hers, but would he direct a stranger to meet the small girl? Maybe only if he’s there as well, since he knows all too well that Eris wouldn’t be cautious about such encounters (no matter how often he warns her about them).

”Tell you what… One of them should be in Sootopolis, I could try to contact her once we dive to the city and deliver all this.”

Mars couldn’t see it either?!

This was all so confusing. Apparently, Maverick was the only one who could see these fancy designs other than others whom possessed them as well. So strange. How many charms and individuals whom have them were out there? And more importantly, why? Was it fate?

And honestly, the burnt scarred man was rather thankful that Mars caught a glimpse of his charm. Maybe with his help and the others he has came across with the same charms, they as a group could figure out what all this is about. A small smile tugged the edge of his lips, giving him a firm nod. “Okay. Sounds good.”

All this talk about the charm made Maverick completely forget about the job he was about to do. Warm gaze shifted to the waters surface, the hard lump in his throat returning once again. He took in a deep breath, moving to place the special diving mouth pieces that would give him oxygen to breath underwater in place. He moved to the edge of the boat, casting one last look at Mars before he leaped off the side of the boat.

Splash.

Despite the suit he wore that was suppose to keep him from getting too cold in the water, a chill ran down his spine as he submerged under water. His heart raced, gaze flickered when a shadow moved in his peripheral. Thankfully, it was just his sharpedo who moved closer so that his master could hold onto his fins. Maverick sighed a breath of relief mentally, using the flippers attacked to his feet to move closer and hang onto his shark. He turned his head, giving Mars a nod that he was ready when he was to get this dive done and over with.

One by one, each piece of gear is inspected to make sure it's working properly, motions flowing easily in what has become a routine after one too many diving trips. Mars sits on the boat’s gunwale, his back to the sea, and when finally hearing the splashing that indicates that maverick noah ryder has jumped in, a regulator is raised to meet his lips.

He allows himself to fall back, doing a small somersault into the water. There’s the familiar and welcomed feeling of it surrounding him, and if only for a few seconds, he closes his eyes, telling himself to forget all about charms and mysteries for now. All that matters is the here and now; the water, diving, and the task at hand.

It’s then when he signals for their cargo to be lowered as well, golden-scaled Wishiwashi aiding with the task of transporting it underwater.

From here to Sootopolis.
[break][break]
Easy enough.
[break][break]
So, is there really a need for more help?
[break][break]
Perhaps there hadn’t been, but as Mars turns to look at Maverick, he knows it’s for the best; that maybe, just maybe, fate led them to meet on that boat, that there has to be a reason why he keeps meeting people like him all over Hoenn.

What could that reason be?
[break][break]
Well, that’s a question Mars can’t answer just yet.

For now, what matters more is making it to the city.
