In theory, it was supposed to be a fairly simple mission, and of course it was, since it had been assigned to no more than a pair of trainees. Surely the Rangers would have never sent them anywhere too dangerous when they were not completely prepared for whatever challenges awaited them, would they?

Help at a honey farm. Use Fire type moves to smoke out the Combee and collect their honey.

Easy enough.

By having her Talonflame blow winds upon the flames created by her Alolan Marowak’s it was soon that the smoke necessary to keep the Combee at bay was created. As they worked, it danced through the air as if fog, blurring their vision while they worked on collecting honey.

”I really can’t imagine doing this all the time… It’s kind of relaxing, though.”

Relaxing, until a sudden loud buzzing made her pause.

Chimney when Groudon was acting up, the surge of rangers racing to the top was nothing short of thrill and purpose. Those were the moments Derek signed up for. But also to be of service to the community, pokemon and civilians alike. They were all residents of Hoenn, after all.

The sound of buzzing from their flank and Amelia's words broke his line of thought, prompting him to turn about with a pokeball at the ready. "C'mon out, Randal." Lobbing it forward to cut off the Vespiquen's advance, the Machamp flexes and lets out a battle call to assure it meant business.

Though he really wanted to test out the battle prowess of his Claydol, their foe had immunity to ground-type pokemon. It was unfortunate, but at the very least Derek knew he could count on the Machamp. "Use the move we went over last week!" Ripping rocks from the earth, Randal sent out a flurry of rocks that would surely deal a hefty blow to the queen bee.

Lia had not signed up to be a ranger for the thrill of it, nor had she signed up for simple things like these. She had signed up because as chaotic as Hoenn is, the region needs competent rangers, and apparently there’s only a handful of them. Why had civilians been infinitely more useful than them during Groudon’s rampage?

Still, all these simpler things had grown on her ever since first becoming a ranger, and they too could come with their own excitements as well…

Excitements like a very angry Vespiquen, a pokémon that by no means should be underestimated. Which, to be fair, Lia didn’t, because how could she when its PRESSURE could be felt even when they could barely see it through the smoke?

”Mana!” With a spin of the Marowak’s bone, WILL-O-WISPS danced through the air, likely to hit the Vespiquen no matter where it moved to when trying to avoid the flurry of rocks. Meanwhile, the Talonflame took care of dispersing the smoke.

"Inferno!" As the large mass of flames came raging forth from the lizard's maw, it took note of the Talonflame's efforts and sought to do the same. Simply because it could, or perhaps to compete with the fellow avian.

"Again, Randal!"

Doing what he could to help keep the Vespiquen at bay, something had him concerned. What with all the smoke now being made, there were likely more bees that would be flushed out soon enough. Hopefully not a lot...

Not one to be outdone, it’s with a FLARE BLITZ that the Talonflame comes rushing down towards the Vespiquen, the Marowak instead staying close to Lia. Weakened by flames, the anger of the queen bee seems to only intensify itself, her buzzing growing louder and louder as she retreats back to the treeline.

But, it’s not over just yet.

”Derek…”

With the smoke now dispersed, the hive answers the call of their queen, soon rising from where they had been hiding among bushes and up in the treetops and coming to her aid. Dozens upon dozens of Combee. Far too many for them to deal with.

Grabbing one of the buckets of honey they have collected, Lia calls back her Marowak, then reaching for the pokéball of her ever-trusted Pidgeot.

The Corviknight is quick to meet it's adversaries head on, regardless of what any of the other trained pokemon are doing.

A mega stone accessory on Derek' wrist synergizes with the one placed around his pokemon's ankle, causing it to hum and glow before the pokemon evolved mid-flight. This brave bird, given it's new stature, met them with equal force. Perhaps greater.

"Alright!" With a majority dealt with already, the ranger turns to the Charizard circling overhead. "Apollo, follow up with your smokescreen!" Given direction, another billowing plume of smoke erupted, further dissuading the bees from hanging out where the rangers had hopes of harvesting even more of their delicious honey.

Is this what rangers are? Trigger-happy assholes who are desperate for a fight? To be fair, Lia has always cared more about protecting people from pokémon than protecting pokémon themselves, but that’s still part of a ranger’s duty, and is it really right for them to be fighting all these Combee when they’re the ones invading their territory? What happened to conservation? To caring for all pokémon’s well-being?

Sure, they would probably end up getting more honey, but at what cost?

A few Combee drop from the skies after the Corviknight’s overwhelming attack, fainted or perhaps even worse.

”Dammit, Derek!” Clicking her tongue in annoyance, Lia calls Otto out of his pokéball, the Pidgeot extending his golden wings. A Mega Stone attached to a leather jess shines, matched by the light emitted by the keystone on Lia’s own archery glove.

The mega evolved Pidgeot flies high, an incredibly powerful WHIRLWIND soon causing many of the Combee to flee the scene, while also spreading the SMOKESCREEN.

"What?!" At this point, Lia's tone suggests she's scared or something else. Whatever that was, it wouldn't be revealed. Not yet, at least. "First you say run, then you curse me for dealing with the problem? We've got a job to do, y'know?"

Although that job can wait, as Derek allows his pokemon to linger for a moment. The combined efforts of their two teams cause the Combee to flee, and even the Vespiquen is having second thoughts...

"Being a ranger is a lot of things, some of which I may not be all too familiar with. But me? I don't run. Ever."

Light-coloured eyebrows furrow, and walking towards him, she reaches up – the golden hues of her gaze now as if molten by raging flame. At first, it looks like she’ll slap him, but her hand closes into a fist in the middle of the trajectory; the punch being one that carries just about all the force that Lia can possibly muster.
