“Slow down!” Locke called out as he chased his Skiddo up the mountain.

Taking the goat along the scenic route had seemed like a good idea at first, especially since this path would be less viable as the weather grew colder. But the abundance of climbing material had Go-Go in a tizzy, racing ahead to higher and higher ledges, while his poor trainer stumbled behind.

They were half-tempted to forgo the exercise and have Ji-Ji carry them the rest of the way.

Locke finally crested the last stretch of the climb behind Go-Go, huffing and puffing, just in time to see the Skiddo charging towards a nest of Exeggcute with a playful Tackle. They reached the goat Pokémon seconds before disaster, wrapping their arms around him and dragging him to a stop while the fragile eggs scattered.

After holding the squirming Skiddo down for a few more seconds for good measure, they both collapsed on one another, exhausted. ”Why don’t we take a break…” Locke wheezed, and Go-Go responded with a reluctant bleat.

Locke parked themselves on a flat-enough rock with a deep sigh.

Twilight wrapped itself around them like a warm blanket, painting the mountain in gold and purple hues. The half-moon was just starting to crest above the horizon, bringing the first few stars of the night with it. They wouldn’t be able to rest for very long if they wanted to be out of the mountains before it got dark, but five minutes wouldn’t kill them.

It was nice. Pleasant even. God, how long had it been since he’d just sat down breathed like this? Even Go-Go seemed to have finally settled down enough to enjoy the sight, while a few wild Chimeco punctuated the scene with gentle bells.

The sunset was so enrapturing, Locke didn’t even notice the Pokémon’s approach until he was face-to-face with a singular, unblinking eye.

He fell back with a yelp, tumbling ass over teakettle into the dirt. He tried to push himself away from the creature, but the Unown slowly followed, rotating back and forth curiously. Locke’s back soon met stone, trapped and helpless as it floated closer and closer.

Until Go-Go charged at it with his Horn Leech, knocking the poor thing back about twenty feet to smack against the cliff face and drop to the ground, unconscious.

A wave of guilt washed over them. It hadn’t actually done anything to earn their fear, had it? If they left it alone now, it was likely to get picked off by some predator. Locke nervously glanced around for any more lurking in the growing shadows, and, on finding nothing, pulled an empty Pokéball from their bag to toss at the Unown.

They looked at the sky as they retrieved the capsule. Nearly-dark. ”…We should hurry up.”
