It’s not often that Mars finds a reason to travel all the way down to the distant island of Ever Grande City, but news of the art museum opening nearby are enough to spark his interest. An art museum and a gym. Not a combination most people would think of, and yet also one that brings back memories of a conversation he once had with Melody Miro about his interest in art and her own abstract pieces. It makes him wonder if any of them are on display here.

He would ask, but it’s soon enough that he finds himself stepping into the Challenger’s Gala, his gaze calmly inspecting the large murals that are supposed to represent all the different arenas. There’s no need to rush. One shouldn’t rush when appreciating art.

There’s something relaxing about being in this place, something that makes him smile, but perhaps that is because Mars has always been fond of visiting art galleries and museums alike.

Relaxing. Enjoyable. That is, at least, until he finds himself stopping before one particular mural.

”These are all impressively detailed... Beautiful brushwork. Did you paint all of them?”

A Ninetales before a tombstone.
[break][break]
Despite Mars’ confident and ever amiable tone, there’s too much about the painting that reminds him of painful times in his life – some recent and some that are supposed to be all too distant. Still, his expression never betrays him, his smile worn as if a perfect mask.

”So, how does the challenge work exactly? Mind walking me through it?”

Not much made Xander smile, but the appreciation of his art always would. It's involuntary, honestly, the way the corner of his lips turned up at Mars's praise. [break][break]

"I did." [break][break]

There's confidence and a hint of pride in his declaration. There'd been many long nights working tirelessly to ensure each mural captured the precise emotion he needed. Body and mind, heart and soul - Xander poured it all into these paintings. [break][break]

"For this one, you need to convince Ninetales to leave the cemetery and move on from her grief. If you can, you'll then guide her to the exit." [break][break]

Xander reached out and pressed the painting's nameplate. The mechanism that kept the wall in place churned to life, and it swung open like a door to reveal a staircase leading down. [break][break]

"You can only bring one Pokemon to help you. Aside from that, you're free to do whatever."

”Ha…” Mars hadn’t made his way to Ever Grande City’s gym with a specific challenge in mind, he hadn’t really had expectations of how this would go or really looked into the gym side of the art museum. He had simply chosen the mural because he had felt drawn to it, and now the reasons for that seem to be even clearer than what they had previously been.

Is it fate or is it just cruel irony?
[break][break]
”Tricky subject, isn’t it? Moving on from grief… Good thing I’m not really one to ever back down from a challenge.”
[break][break]
A slight smirk tugs at his lips while watching the wall shift thanks to hidden mechanisms, a door being revealed before them. It should probably inspire wonder and awe, but all the banker can really think of is the challenge that awaits him and what pokémon he should bring with him when facing it.

The choice seems obvious, and yet, before stepping onto the staircase, Mars stares at the Love Ball in his hand – so uncharacteristically pink and cute, so different from the Luxury Balls that belong to most of his pokémon.

”Alright, let’s do this.”

There’s a sigh, and it’s only then when he steps forward, walking down the staircase.

Xander only offered Mars a nod. But there's a pain that only those who truly understood grief could bear behind his eyes. The pain carried to his lips that struggled to keep themselves from frowning. [break][break]

"I'll be waiting up here for you."[break][break]

Darkness covered Martín like a blanket as he descended the staircase. Each step he took would echo, drum a beat around him in another wise silent void. The black expanse continued for so long he might think it wouldn't end. Until, after several flights, orange light crested the stairs from below. [break][break]

Walking through the archway at the bottom would reveal the scene: a Ninetales sitting alone beneath an otherworldly tree with ember-bright leaves. The world around her, aged and withered. [break][break]

Though her ears twitched at Mars's arrival, she didn't look away from the grave before her. Layered thick with vines and moss, the tombstone she stared at looked older than the others. Deep cracks ran through its stone-grey surface. [break][break]

She sighed, head lowering to her paws.

It’s with a deep breath that he faces the darkness, but in its presence there’s no discomfort at all. It’s familiar, and perhaps at these moments, even welcomed and comforting too

The scene from the painting, on the other hand…

The Ninetales. The tombstone. The tree of Autumnal leaves. A beautiful scene and yet one of loss; of death, of grief, of the merciless way in which time passes. It’s a scene that causes him to tighten his grip onto the Love Balls he holds.

Once, Mars had read that a Ninetales can live for a thousand years. How much grief can a pokémon like that carry within itself? Can pokémon even feel things like those?
[break][break]
He knows the answer all too well, for he can clearly see it within the Sylveon that’s called to his side in a flash of light.
[break][break]
”Be cautious.” Mars warns, putting the Love Ball away while watching Achelous quietly and slowly approach both the Ninetales and the tombstone.

Yet from the corner of her eye, she watched the pair. The worry that they might disturb the sanctuary's peace danced faintly in her thoughts.

In the end, he’s not here to sympathise with the Ninetales, no matter how many memories all this brings; no matter the fact that it makes him think of all he has lost, and of all the times he has visited graves much like this one.

”Convince her to move on from her grief…” Musing out loud, Mars repeats Xander Belmont’s own words as he considers the challenge and a sigh leaves him. ”Grief is not something you just move on from in an instant. When you lose someone important to you, that grief always dwells within your heart.”

Is the Ninetales’ grief even real to begin with or is it all just an act?
[break][break]
”But… Things like attraction can momentarily distract you from those feelings and you can even find happiness despite them.”
[break][break]
That’s something Mars himself knows well. Something he has had to repeat to himself over and over in the past. That he can be happy.
[break][break]
In this case, though… In this case a moment may be just what they need.
[break][break]
Heading his words, the Sylveon acts, calling to the Ninetales’ attention with his ever-enchanting ability to ATTRACT any pokémon of the opposite gender. It’s a cheap trick, sure, but no one said they couldn’t trick the Ninetales.

This time, Mars even addresses the pokémone even if it seems strange to him, still looking at her just as the Sylveon by his side does as well.

”Wouldn’t those you lose want you to be happy?”

ATTRACT failed to captivate Ninetales, but her head lifts from her paws, full attention now on the pair. Interesting. She'd expected them to try something different. [break][break]

Ears twitch at the question. Would her master be happy if she left? Dawn can't know that, and neither can Mars. The canine whimpers in reply. Almost as if to trying to voice that very sentiment. [break][break]

What did he know of a loss anyway? One dressed so primly and proper, a fine-furred Pokemon at his side. There's only grief without her master. Only the endless tides of sadness and despair that have chained her heart for half a millennium. [break][break]

"Nii." two of her tails swayed and curled, eyes narrowing. [break][break]

Leave her be Martín del Mar. Let her remain until age turns orange fur grey, and she sleeps her last.

Grief comes in many forms, and apparently, pokémon can feel grief too. This is something Mars knew all too well before even meeting Xander’s Ninetales, for the Sylveon by his side has felt the pain of losing a loved one just as deeply as its master…

Once, when they were much younger and had just begun dating, Cosima had bought two eggs for his birthday: one for him. one for heR – two eevees to be raised together. Hers was Achelous, his was Melpomene. Matching names for matching pokémon who adored each other as much as their owners did. But while Melpomene had evolved when finding an ice rock on a trip to Snowpoint City, Achelous evolved because of the friendship Cosima showed him.

The love.
[break][break]
The affection.
[break][break]
He was her favourite pokémon in the whole world.
[break][break]
And then, she died. He couldn’t protect her. He couldn’t save her from those who caused her harm.
[break][break]
A Sylveon whose grief is as deep as his guilt A Sylveon who, when faced with a Ninetales that also seems to be grieving, chooses to approach her.

Mars simply watches, allowing Achelous to take charge, and when the Sylveon extends one of his ribbon-like feelers towards the fox, he wonders what the real intention is there.

Beckoning her to come with? Offering her a helping hand?

Tiny wisps of flame curling out from the sides of closed lips accompany a cautious stare. Dawn's sight lowered on the feeler. From it to Sylveon, her attention flickered. An olive branch extended or a trick to drop her guard? Pushing the lethargy of grief down, Dawn rose, shaking loose the ember-leafs gathered on her fur. [break][break]

Since they were so stubborn, she'd give them a chance. One opportunity to prove they understood. She reached for the Sylveon's ribbon, her paw brushing warily against it. [break][break]

If they tricked her, they'd regret it. [break][break]

Rarely does Mars trust in his pokémon enough to blindly rely on their judgement when it comes to most things, but out of the hundreds in his possession, Achelous may just be one of the only ones he’d trust with just about anything.

As if holding her hand through a difficult situation. A short moment passes, Achelous perhaps wishing to show he means no harm, and then, there’s a soft tug, as if attempting to indicate that she should come with them.

She tensed as the feeler wrapped around her paw. In warning, Dawn raised her upper lip, flashing fang and flaring smoke from her nose. [break][break]

There's a moment of nothing, a short pause where Dawn and the Sylveon stand motionless, locked paw-in-ribbon. It's here in the silence that understanding finds her. [break][break]

Sylveon knew loss. He'd trodded the pitch-blackness of grief, and it hadn't consumed him. Somehow, someway, Sylveon found a light in the darkness. A light he attempted to guide her toward, but Ninetales hesitated. [break][break]

Dawn looked back at the gravestone sullenly. "Niee." her head shook, then drooped low. She tugged her hand free from Sylveon's feeler and approached the tomb. Her forehead pressed against the cool, moss-covered stone. [break][break]

"Niee." [break][break]

Tears flooded from her eyes and down onto the tombstone. A final goodbye.[break][break]

She turned, ready to leave. [break][break]

But as Mars will soon see, the path back may not be so easy to find. While Ninetales said her goodbye, a purple mist slithered between gravestones like a snake through the grass. Thick, unnatural, the haze rose and smothered all in its embrace.

Guide Ninetales through the fog and to the exit. [break][break]

Be wary. You may no longer be alone.

There’s nothing easy about living with grief, about carrying those feelings within oneself and doing everything in one's power not to crumple under their weight.

The Ninetales does what she can, she gathers all of her strength in order to say goodbye to the grave of the one she lost and get out of this place. But, as if palpable proof of the difficult existence of those who are left behind, it’s mist that rolls in then…

Pink mist.
[break][break]
A haze of rose and violet.
[break][break]
The sight is met with a visceral reaction: eyes of amber widening as Mars recalls all the horrors he once faced within mist that didn’t look all that different from this one. All his dreams, all his deepest fears – all of them shown to him by an accursed and corrupted Interdream Zone.

That can’t be it, right?
[break][break]
Not here. Not now.
[break][break]
It’s just a test, and that’s what he reminds himself of as he takes a breath.

”Achelous, light the way forward with MOONBLAST.”

The Sylveon that had remained close to the Ninetales all this time twitches his ears when hearing the command, eyes of blue glowing to summon a moon that shines its pale light upon the misty room.

While cautious and still uneasy, Mars steps forward then, going down the path he remembers to be the way towards the exit given that the mist obscures their vision and hides everything within its rosy depths.

And Achelous? He turns towards the Ninetales, urging her to come along with them.

Moonblast dispersed the fog to the four corners of the graveyard like a gale of wind scattering dandelions. But Mars wouldn't make it far before the colorful haze rolled back in. A magnet pulling metal, it drew toward him and his dolorous companion, covering them like a blanket.[break][break]

Much like moving on from the loss of love escaping would not be easy.[break][break]

The crunch and rustle of leaves underfoot disturbed the silent air. Circling the trio, it paused, sounding closest to Martín's left. [break][break]

"Why?" spoke a haunting, masculine voice.[break][break]

Ninetales halted, her head thrown to the left as a flame erupted into view. Producing no heat and surrounded in a blue glow, the ember bobbed up and down in the air. [break][break]

Again, the crunch of leaves sounded as something moved unseen around them. [break][break]

"Why, Dawn?" [break][break]

Another flame flickered to life behind the trio. Whatever lay in the fog continued to circle. [break][break]

"You promised." [break][break]

A third ember burned into existence on Martín's right. For a final time, leaves crunched, and a fire ignited. The fourth azure flame bobbed like the others before Mars, blocking the way.[break][break]

"You promised that you'd never leave me."[break][break]

Ninetales whimpered and lowered to the ground. Two of her nine tails moved to cover her ears, desperate to block out the voice. Something cackled at the sight of Dawn's cowering form. If only she'd heard. Perhaps then, she wouldn't think the wrath of the spirits was upon her.[break][break]

The fire began a wild ballet around them, spinning as it moved. Harmless until one of the fireballs suddenly shot at Sylveon and Mars. The Will-o-Wisps inflected no damage, but it would burn their souls with the tragic memories of loss.

Deal with the creature in the mist.
