The dead are challenging, especially with a devilish Marowak manipulating their souls to his whim. Not even Sylveon's DISARMING VOICE is enough to soothe the perturbed spirits. But Martín del Mar is an intelligent man, full of Thievul's cunning and the stubbornness of a Bagon refusing to quit on its dream. Marowak didn't stand a chance with both pointed in his direction. He collapsed at Mars's feet. The spectral flame on the ends of his bone club snuffed out like a birthday candle. With it, the mist vanished in the blink of an eye alongside the voices of the damned. [break][break]

Dawn picked herself up from the ground, shaking dirt from her fur. Appreciation deep enough to drown in flooded her amber orbs as they moved between trainer and Pokemon. She could not thank them enough for what they'd done. [break][break]

All that was left now was to head to the exit.[break][break]

For a second there, as he stares down at the fallen Marowak, Mars wonders if he should poke it or kick it to ensure it’s okay, but surely Xander Belmont wouldn’t come up with a gym challenge that puts his own pokémon at risk, would he? Mars can’t imagine a goody good League official purposefully hurting his own team…

”You okay there, Dawn?” A simple question asked with no apparent ill-intent, the Ninetales that had reminded him of so many painful things being given a faint smile before they continue to walk towards the exit.

Once the trio's footsteps sounded far enough away, a cheeky Marowak lifted his head from the ground. Glancing about, Charon couldn't see Ninetales and the challenger. "Marroo." he cooed, picking himself up and grabbing his bone.[break][break]

Time for lunch. If he wasn't mistaken, today was curry day. Marowak licked his lips, droll spilling onto the dirt as he made off for the secret exit behind the graveyard's tree. [break][break]

Mars encountered no more problems on his way to the exit. When he arrived, Xander stood ready and waiting.[break][break]

"I'm impressed." he said dryly, "Dawn is stubborn. Not many could convince her to leave." Ninetales flicked her tails, casting aside the weak facade of her role in the act. She stood taller and walked to Xander's side with a regal stride.[break][break]

The gym leader rubbed at his neck. "The whole thing was an act, by the way. Ya know, in case that wasn't clear."

Like Mars had thought goody good League officials don’t hurt their own pokémon on purpose, and an ancient gravesite by a tree wouldn’t be indoors in a newly-constructed gym (unless they decide to build around it, but let’s be honest, that’s costly and unlikely).

When he reaches the exit and finds himself standing before Xander Belmont, a slight smirk tugs at his lips, watching the way the Ninetales’ demeanor changes when approaching her trainer. ”Maybe it takes stubborn to deal with stubborn.” Mars jokes, and couching down, he then turns his attention to his Sylveon. He pets the spot between the Fairy type’s large ears as if to reassure it that things are okay, an affectionate gesture he wouldn’t spare for just any pokémon. Achelous actually matters a lot.

”I figured it must have been an act, no worries.” But, the Sylveon probably didn’t, and it’s because he knows this that Mars calls it back to its Love Ball before it decides to grow upset by the whole situation. He stands then, turning his attention towards the gym leader once again.

”It was an interesting challenge… Like going into the painting. You captured it well.”

The grief, that is.

”So, does this mean we pass?”
