"I hope that Locke gets a pretty sleigh, so he and Santa can deliver presents together!" Humming, she tiptoes a little to hang the tiny sled ornament up. A mistletoe, "For people to be happy and find love this winter." Sleigh bells, "To ring in the coming year and wake the pokemon for spring." Guardian angels, "To watch over me and you!"

Even Reiner has fun in putting up a few orbs of his own, looking at his distorted reflection and shaking his head from side to side as he marvels at the strange sight. Ah, but even the usually calm and composed Luxray is caught off guard when Mars holds the most important ornament up to Eris, his tail flicking to mirror the movement of the star.

"A- are you sure?" She stammers, hesitant in taking it as her eyes are drawn to the beautiful shine. The brightest light to guide people through a dark winter, a pretty star that burns through the night. Looking at to the top of the tree, Eris considers if she should honestly just hand the ornament back to Mars.

The tree had been his wish for Eris: his hope that she would get to make the happy holiday memories he never got to make back when he was her age. And, at the same time, it’s as if she fills it with her own wishes when placing ornament after ornament. It’s with a smile that he listens, noting on each one of them:

A mistletoe for people to find love.

Bells to ring in order to wake the pokémon for spring.

Guardian angels to watch over the two of them…

So many wishes. How does a child to whom the world has been so cruel still have room for so much love within her heart? Is it perhaps thanks to people like Chu-e Choi? In many ways, that may just be the greatest miracle of all and one that Mars himself is thankful for, even if one day all that kindness is likely to work to Eris’ own detriment…

The world is merciless to kind people like her, but that is a thought he quickly pushes away.

”Of course I’m sure.” He grins, petting her head affectionately. ”Eris, if you can’t do things alone you can always ask for help, you know? Here...” There’s a wink with those words, and before the girl even has a chance to respond, he moves behind her, picking her up by her sides so she’s high enough to place the star at the very top of the tree.

[attr="class","inner-finally"]The head pat isn't something she expected to receive, so it takes a moment of tensing for her to get used to it. But when she finally does accept it, there's a sort of familiarity and warmth that lingers even after he stops.

For a moment, she remembers how home feels like.

And yet, that feeling is quickly swept away when Mars picks her up, a small squeal escaping her lips when she finds her legs unable to touch the ground. How long has it been since someone has carried her like this? Her legs kick a little as she tries to find any sense of balance but nothing really changes, and she can't deny that there's a sort of refreshment that comes with being able to look at things from a whole new perspective...

Looking at the star in her hands, it takes her a moment to try and remember what it is she should be doing, hands hesitantly reaching out to place the ornament at the very top and working nimbly to straighten it out. When she pulls back to observe her handiwork, she's quiet, as if lost in thought as a strange sensation bubbles up within her chest. It's nothing like the dreadful emptiness that often haunts her; Instead, it's... calming and fuzzy, almost warm even.

A northern star, to keep our dreams lit.

His whispers are carried upon the wind, rising to the surface like bubbles in a shaken bottle of fizz. Reiner purrs in approval of the decorations, pressing against Mars' leg and watching Eris with that dedication he's maintained for years. And with all her thoughts churning and trying to make themselves heard, what comes next is enough to speak for the both of them.

Look to the stars.

Gold shimmers under fluorescent light as small hands place a star ornament at the very top of a Christmas tree. A star once meant to represent a prophecy fulfilled; meant to represent hope for humanity.

The irony of it all is not lost on him, and yet, as he holds Eris up and looks at the ornament, Mars finds himself wondering if such things could be true this time too…

If stars could bring them hope instead of the doom Killian Decker spoke of.
[break][break]
If those who supposedly watch over him from above actually want what’s best for him.
[break][break]
Mars has always been so pragmatic, so grounded in his reality and in facts, but here, holding this little girl who is somehow so strong despite being so young and so fragile, he allows himself to hope for the first time in years. Hope that life will be kinder to her than what it has been to him. Hope that he can become better than what this life has made of him – better than the binds of blood that have defined him. If not for himself, then perhaps for people like Eris Halla; for the people that matter to him.

A pretty wish.

There’s no way that this is what Azelf had meant when it had said such a thing, so why is he thinking so much during a moment that’s supposed to be simple and insignificant? Is it because it’s neither of those things to him?

The smile he wears when finally lowering Eris and letting go is a slight one, however honest it may be.

”There’s one more thing... Call it early Christmas.”

And it’s only then when it illuminates, Mars ever so nonchalantly pointing towards the desk where two presents lay: one larger and rectangular, and one that looks as if a sphere.

Her hesitance prompts Reiner to nudge her gently, taking her hand and guiding her towards the table. Picking the box up, Eris takes a moment to turn it over, then looks to Mars once more.

"Are you sure?" She murmurs, seeming almost ready to place it back down. And yet, she's stopped by the Luxray, a paw placed on her hand as he watches her expectantly. To help things along, he even drags a claw over the corner of the wrapping, leaving a small tear for her to continue with.

Hesitation seems to loom over Eris’ enjoyment of these moments as if a dark cloud that promises to bring storms upon her, and while Mars wishes he could make those feelings completely vanish in an instant, he knows he can not.

What he can do is reassure her, and he does so in the form of a warm smile and a nod, a hand being gently placed on her back as if to encourage her to reach for the presents.

He watches as she opens the first one, which reveals itself to be a book: new, hardcover, of nice illustrations, and rather heavy too.
[break][break]
”It’s a book about the sea, marine pokémon, and all sorts of myths about the oceans… When I was way younger than you, my dad would always take me sailing and tell me about things like those. I think that’s all important to know when you live in a place like Hoenn.”

But, it’s more than just that, is it?
[break][break]
It’s that he knows Eris enjoys learning, and that things like those matter to him.
[break][break]
After all, his fondness for the ocean is just about the last connection he has left to his father. Is it something to be passed down to the future generation, then? Something he would have taught his own son? Something he hopes might one day bring happiness to Eris as well?

Maybe, but for that to happen she might need to learn to swim first.

[attr="class","inner-finally"]The sea is a beauty and a beast all the same, consuming the lives of many and continuing to lure in more with her endless mysteries. Even through the quagmire of uncertainty, when Eris takes one look at the book, it's hard to miss that expression of sheer joy slipping onto her face.

"Like the biggest Wailords and the deepest Chinchous? Kyogre, Lugia and the people of the sea?"

Information on creatures that lay beyond the shores of their region, myths that even her mother had yet to uncover or elaborate on - The words that have been etched into this book call out to her, to flip the pages and see further but she refrains for now. Instead, with a little nuzzle from Reiner, she turns her attention towards the other gift, a little less hesitant as she carefully unravels the packaging.

It’s just a book he found when looking through the stores in Mauville, one that doesn’t even have extremely complex information, but that talks about marine pokémon and tales of the sea. A simple book, and yet it makes her smile with such pure joy – genuinely happy to have received it as a gift.

”Yeah, exactly. Maybe when you learn to swim we can go diving and see some of those face-to-face, hm?”

Smirking, he pokes the tip of Eris’ nose to tease her, but it’s soon enough that he lets the girl turn her attention to the second gift. The bow on this one is white and shimmering with glitter...

And, as Eris opens it, it will reveal itself to be a beautiful snow globe. The base of it is adorned, and within the glass sphere, there are figures: a small girl with blonde hair, a Luxray, and a Christmas tree not unlike the one they had all just decorated together. All of them standing on a layer of snow-like glitter that moves whenever the sphere does.

To this, the Luxray gives Mars a look that clearly says he's not too keen on the matter. What he is keen on though is the shimmer that shows from under the wrapping, his snout gently brushing against Eris' arm as he draws close.

It's pretty - No, more than that... Her attention fixates on the ornaments, then flutters with the gentle swirl of glitter around them. A moment captured in time in the strangest of ways, a looking glass into the beauties of life that she's barely had.

Her vision blurs, her eyes and cheeks sting just a little. Her heart beats out of rhythm and it twists within her chest. If nothing had ever happened... If they'd still been here... It's so bitter upon her tongue but the kindness behind these gifts remains ever so sweet.

When words may fail her, she totters, reaching out to hug him.
