lying? about identity?

”well, at least that one’s easy. i’ve only been doing that my whole life.” even the breakfast part. different people had different tastes. nina liked gin, but annie only did vodka. every detail mattered.

”i’m not even sure i know my real name.”

for so long, it had been nina, until she’d realized nina larson did not exist—at least, not here in hoenn. the revelation had explained a handful of things, and created dozens more questions.

she stared at a fry as she picked it up. the small phantom of a smile played at the corner of her mouth.

”so you’re not really king, then?”

it hadn’t been her choice, but she didn’t say that. instead, she absorbed his compliment, feeling embarrassed for reasons she couldn’t put her finger on. ”um... thanks.”

wait... former league operative? her head turned curiously, her brow scrunching with inquiry before she was derailed. a blank slate? she supposed that was accurate. why did it hurt? it obviously wasn’t meant to be an insult, but she couldn’t help herself.

”yeah,” she nodded. ”you’re probably right. better to just stay nobody.” with a melodramatic sigh, she brought more fries to her mouth. chewed, swallowed.

”so... you were in the league?”

she’d lost her appetite a bit ago, but snacking on fries had given her something to do that wasn’t sitting there and watching him without knowing the right things to say.

she stared a moment, and then remembered. oh yeah. reaching into her bag, she pushed around phones for her wallet and extracted a credit card, putting it on the table.

she took the card, putting it back into her wallet and eyeing him curiously. this whole thing had been a little confusing. deflating, even. not having to pay for the meal made it a little better. did he like her after all, or was she just useless, foolish company for the sake of company?

the conversation had turned quickly, king's usual honest (read: blunt) way of handling situations didn't translate well to something like this. then again, he was used to women that were just as dangerous as he was, and nina didn't quite fit that billet.

she found herself curious what king was like drunk. he was a dangerous man, and even sober he was loud and intimidating. maybe this was a bad idea, but again, she nodded.

”yeah.”

his crooked grin was returned with a soft, less than certain smile. they were on the same team, supposedly. even if he was critical of her, this was, in theory, safe enough. what else did she have to lose at this point, anyways?

her brow pinched briefly, surprised at his enthusiasm. she wound her scarf around her neck again quickly before collecting her things and following. she nodded to the owner on the way out, saying a ‘thank you’ in king’s wake.

she caught up with him, pulling her scarf higher and wrapping her arms around herself.
