Mattie's expression falls a bit when he asks about the dangers. "Yeah, it's...rough," she tells him, gathering her thoughts. "We were really lucky for a long time, but Rocket set their sights on a friend of mine. He refused to join, and their offers for him to join...escalated, shall we say." She looks around warily, checking to make sure they weren't being overheard or followed. Seeing nothing out of place, she lowers her voice a bit regardless. "He fled to save the few Pokemon and belongings he had left, and when he disappeared they turned their sights on me and my aunt's Nursery." [break][break]

Matilda perks up a bit at the mention of Nona and the business. "We bred and raised Pokemon for both Companion and Trainer use," she explains. "Rocket thought I knew where their target was, so they started hounding me for information and threatening - " she stops abruptly, glancing around nervously again before clearing her throat. "They thought I knew where he was, and when I told them I didn't they thought I was keeping things from them." Matilda makes eye contact with Asher. "I didn't know," she tells him genuinely. "So, to protect my aunt and the rest of the Pokemon at the Nursery, I left in search of my friend." When she gets to the end of her story, she smiles at him. "But hopefully it'll be a bit better here. I might even be able to start a nursery of my very own!" With that she boops Taika's nose, and the little fairy giggles. "What about you? Why'd you leave Alola for Hoenn?"

A conscription into their service...they really needed to do better if they wanted members. Threats only pushes people away unless they were weak willed. Looking back, he made eye contact with her as she genuinely said that she didn't know where the guy went. Some people were good lairs. Others were not. And for the experienced, it was pretty obvious to tell what type a person was. It showed that Rocket over in Kanto was somewhat incompetent, or too large now to be able to one, effectively recruit, and two, actually gather useful information. Goodness, he was only fifteen and he knew better than this. Mattie was optimistic at least. "Slateport can get expensive on the housing part. Finding a decent job shouldn't be too much of an issue for you. With me being a minor, it was tough finding anything. But I at least found a couple part time jobs, even if they are seasonal."

He wasn't going to get into his more...dubious means of getting by. Probably not a conversation to have with her. At least she had a goal though, where he didn't. When she asked about him, he grimaced. Of course she'd ask that. It was only natural since he had asked her. "Not much to tell. Parents favored my twin over me. And said twin was, and likely still is, an arrogant asshole who put me down every chance he got. After I tried, and failed, to get him into trouble, and getting yelled it, just got sick of it all and stowed away to anywhere. Thinking it had to be better than that mess. Despite how hard it's been, it has been better than putting up with that crap." Luckily, they weren't too far away from a decent hotel. Not a raggedy piece of crap, but not like, a five-star place either.

Listening to the boy's plight on the job front, Mattie nodded sympathetically. "I've had my share of seasonal jobs. They are *not* easy." She sighs. "I don't know how I'm gonna afford a house yet, but I'm just taking things one day at a time. No use stressin' over things you can't control, right?" Mattie gives Asher a soft, tired smile.[break][break]

As Asher divulges his past, her brow furrows in frustration and her jaw clenches. Mattie's quiet for a spell after he stops talking, just mulling over his words. Her voice is soft and sympathetic as she tells him, "I'm so sorry you had to go through that. No one should ever be treated like that and it's awful that you had to leave."[break][break]

"I'm so happy you were here to help me and Dziban, though," she says thankfully, before her expression shifts to one of nonchalant confidence. "Well, they're all a bunch of dum-dums who don't know awesome when they see it," she says very matter-of-fact. "I, for one, would be overjoyed to call you family." Not only does Mattie smile at him but Taika, who had been listening quietly, smiles over at Asher and makes happy little Togepi sounds. Dziban's expression is hard to read as always, but he does look at Asher and slowly tilt his head uncomfortably far to the left until he flips over, laying on his back on Mattie's shoulder as his little Dreepy paws hang down over his head. [break][break]

Did she have the means to take care of this kid? No. Not yet, she told herself. But she sure as fuck wasn't going to leave him in the street with nothing but thoughts and prayers to hold onto, not when there was even the slightest chance she could provide a little happiness and security for him. What was life without the connections we make along the way, right?

Asher didn't know what kind of seasonal jobs she's had, but he couldn't help but think it wasn't all that bad. He worked as a bus boy/dish washer at a cafe during the summers, and during the winters as an attendant at a hot spring in Lavaridge Town. What caught him was the thanks that he was there to help her. Even if it was for more...selfishness than selflessness. As nice as she was, everyone had a darkside to them...and her being so pg didn't help. Even with the babies. Shrugging, Asher just responded. "Maybe. Maybe not. Only time will tell. Ah, here we are...Auntie Helga's Place. Kind of on the cusp of cheap and average, but the rooms are clean, beds are just comfortable enough, and also offers a decent selection of Pokekibble for Pokemon in addition to a free breakfast with homemade biscuits and gravy...she could run a business just on those and make a fortune..."

The red head drooled at the thought of it. When he could afford it, he did stay here. He would rip off a lot of people...but Helga he did not. And would gladly attack anyone that tried. Once in a while she'd also offer an odd job, usually help cleaning rooms or if he could figure out how to fix something her maintenance guy couldn't get to. A chuckle came from behind them. "Well, thank you young one. I take it you're also staying with us? Come on in, you two." An older lady walked past them while giving the two a kind smile. Helga's granddaughter was behind the counter. And she squealed at the sight of the Togepi and Dreepy. "Aww, look at the two sweeties! Two one bedroom rooms, I take it?" Nodding, Asher pointed to Mattie while smiling goofily.

Asher's excitement over Auntie Helga's was contagious. Mattie smiled and her stomach rumbled...oh right, she hadn't eaten since this morning. [break][break]

From the moment they stepped in the building, Matilda felt a peace around them that hadn't been there when they'd been walking through the abandoned warehouses. It wasn't a five star resort, but it was homey and honestly that's what Mattie needed right now; to feel comfortable and safe. It was clear the two ladies had seen Asher before from the familiarity in their words and gestures, and when Matilda noticed the younger girl's excitement over her Pokemon, she readily set Taika on the counter to get out the money for the two rooms. She included a few extra dollars - these seemed like good people, and if they helped out Asher now and then, she wanted to do what she could for them.[break][break]

Matilda handed Asher his room key, along with enough money for a few days worth of food. "Sleep well, and in case I don't see you before you leave tomorrow, you can at least get by for a bit, okay?" She looked him up and down one more time before pulling out a piece of paper and writing her phone number on it. "In case you ever need anything. Don't hesitate to give me a call." Matilda scoops up Taika once again then heads to her room, exhausted but feeling pretty good overall about her first day in Hoenn.
