When was the last time Serena had gone out to such an official public outing? She couldn't remember. Things had been hectic for as long as she could remember. It'd been months since she was able to enjoy the blissful ignorance she lived in prior to the events of Sootopolis. And now she had even more on her plate than before. [break][break]

Whether she wanted to admit it or not, things had spiraled out of control due to her own negligence and she needed help. Gavin was correct, she needed to figure out how to turn this unfortunate situation into a win for Rocket. Even if she wasn't the one who started all this shit, this mess was perpetuated because she had been unable to gain a proper hold on all of this. She needed to take responsibility. [break][break]

While she was confident in some areas, she knew she'd have to call upon those more used to this sort of stuff to help iron out the details. Which is exactly why Martin was the first person she thought of. They had old history, went way back. When it came to difficult points in her career he was always available to help her through it. She could only hope he'd be willing to lend a hand once again because she really blew it this time.[break][break]

She invited him out to the ice rink his company had tossed up here for the public to enjoy. It didn't snow often in Hoenn but to really get the people in the festive spirit it seemed he was really laying it on thick. She figured she could take advantage of that and have 'Serena' make an appearance to get word spreading about this place. [break][break]

She already had her boots laced up and was stepping onto the ice before long. Serena figured she shouldn't make it obvious she was waiting on someone or they would start to talk. So she'd just make it seem like she was here to have some fun for now.

With the beginning of December always came holiday cheer, but in a place like Hoenn, so used to tropical temperatures and where snowfall was so very rare, the appearance of the latter seemed to only intensify people’s festive spirit. Like a holiday miracle.

To Mars, an opportunity; the chance to provide people with the perfect winter wonderland they always dreamt of. Not out of the goodness of his heart, of course, but because later on, when looking back how much they enjoyed these snowy days, they would remember that POG Bank did this for them.

They better remember, given all the advertisements everywhere.

”Bet you never expected to go ice skating in Hoenn, huh?” The smile with which he greeted her when seeing her step upon the ice was one bright and confident, the sort of smile that often seemed as if Mars’ own patented brand. He may not have been the greatest at ice skating out there, but he knew his basics and was decent enough at it to flawlessly glide through the ice towards her, offering her a hand.

It seemed like the people that were skating about were truly enjoying themselves. After all this experience was unique. A very festive winter wonderland provided by those at POG Bank. It wasn't just your regular ice skating rink. It was the opportunity to make one-of-a-kind memories. [break][break]

Serena wasn't the best at ice skating but she was self taught on some things. She took dance classes when she was younger. Applying what she learned there to the ice didn't prove to be that difficult. But at least she wouldn't be embarrassing herself by slipping and sliding all over the ice. [break][break]

"Bet you never expected to go ice skating in Hoenn, huh?” a familiar voice snapped her from her thoughts as she glanced up to see Mars skating over towards her. Surprised azure orbs widen as a smile forms on her lips. "Oh I didn't know you were already here." she said as she glanced around at everyone once more. "I certainly didn't expect to see winter arrive to Hoenn but you made that happen somehow." She said as she beamed up at him. "Honestly, what can't you do?" she teased. [break][break]

He offered a hand towards her which she gladly took. Hopefully he didn't notice how cold her hands had become. "Lovely as ever, Serena. How have you been?” While they started to skate around the rink together she offered a slight curtsey at his compliment. "Thank you." she smiled, "And...I've been better. But I'm good now that I'm here with you." She joked as she stuck her tongue out at him playfully. [break][break]

"The reception looks good. I'm starting to think you didn't even need me to show up."

A man who could make the impossible possible; who could make people’s dreams come true. It’s not something Mars ever cared much for calling himself, and yet as the CEO of a bank, perhaps that’s exactly the image he should have given off. How often did people go to banks with the hopes of making their dreams come true, after all? Seeking help to achieve their goals?

Piazza Oro Grande Bank should have been a place where all impossible things became possible.

Maybe that was exactly the kind of message he intended to send when creating this little winter wonderland for the people of Slateport.

”I won’t take all the credit, but the ice rink was my idea. Figured Hoennians would appreciate the opportunity, right?... Though, between you and me, I may have also just really missed Sinnoh’s winters.” There was a smile, the latter words being quieter and accompanied by a wink – as if they were a secret meant only for her ears. In a way, they really were, since selfish reasons were far from what Mars told the press when asked about the ice rink earlier. It was all for Hoenn, for its people, never for himself.

Hand in hand, they began to skate, Mars being well aware of just how cold she felt but choosing not to comment on it just yet – if only because her words distracted him from such a simple concern.

”I’ve been better.”

That made two of them, then.

Still, he smiled at her all the same. ”I may start thinking you’re fishing for compliments, you know your presence is always helpful.” Teasing as his words may have been, they were honest, as were the ones so very casually spoken when honey-coloured eyes met those of an all too similar shade. ”I also just wanted you here.”

Serena could understand what he meant. Every now and then she found herself a little homesick too. Especially around the holidays like this. She would remember when she was little and get so excited when she would see snow back home in Sinnoh. Serena and her mom would rush to bake holiday cookies and stay up late to watch Christmas movies. Honestly, that's why Christmas was her favorite time of year. [break][break]

It was supposed to be a time where she focused on love, family, and sharing joy. This year, it wasn't shaping up to be any of that. Burdened by her mistakes and stressed from what lie in store for her in the future, this holiday was one she wished would wrap up already. "I may start thinking you’re fishing for compliments, you know your presence is always helpful.”[break][break]

Glancing over at him she offered a playful shrug as a coy smile tugged at the corners for her lips. "What can I say? Sometimes I like hearing just how much someone needs me." she laughed as they continued to skate smoothly around the rink. In the distance she could spy some cameras snapping their pictures but she tried to pay them no mind.[break][break]

"I also just wanted you here.” Mars' gaze held hers for a moment and she was silent for a brief moment as she searched those honey-colored hues of his. "Careful there Mr. CEO. Words like that might make me mistakenly fall for you." She said as she the corners of her lips turned up in a smile. "You'd have to take responsibility if that happens." she said as she glanced back at him, her eyes twinkling while the air around them stayed light as the two joked with one another. [break][break]

She honestly didn't want to ruin the mood with her news but she also really needed to ask for his help. She was at her wits end and she didn't know how to play her next cards. Whatever choice she made she needed to ensure that nothing like this would ever happen again. For a moment the smile faded from Serena's face as her facial expression mirrored the confusion that lay in her heart. But it was only for a moment before she quickly masked it just like she was used to doing. [break][break]

Looking down at their intertwined hands she spoke softly to him. "Think I can talk to you about something serious while keeping this act up for the public?" she already knew the answer but she figured this would alert him to the seriousness of what she had to talk to him about. She nodded lightly towards the cameras that were busy snapping their pictures and other's that would occasionally sneak glances at the two. Eyes were on them whether she liked it or not, so they would have to take that into account while they talked.

The occasional camera snapped pictures of them as they skated around the rink, but Mars paid them no mind – acting as if he didn’t notice their presence at all despite how obvious they could be sometimes. It was the kind of attention someone like Serena was bound to draw, and part of the reason why her presence was ever so helpful. Rumours were bound to sprout from those pictures, that much Mars also knew, but they could be dealt swiftly if it were needed…

Or, they could just let them talk.

”You are needed, and I appreciate having you here. I bet other people will too.” The words were as smooth as ever, his attention remaining fixed on her. He meant it too, in more than one way , for while he would always consider Serena to be a useful asset (he wouldn’t have invested so much into her career if he did not, after all), she also happened to be someone whose company he always enjoyed.

And, perhaps that’s exactly why he so easily matched the smile she offered him, chuckling lightly at her warnings. ”Duly noted, Miss Malcolm. Although, what kind of man would I be if I didn’t take responsibility for my own actions?”

Not the kind of person Mars was.

Not the kind of person he wanted to be.
[break][break]
Then again, so many of the effects of his own actions were ones he considered minimal and not worth the trouble.

”Serena…” The question drew his away from such thoughts, yet even if it caused a certain concern to rise, his expression remained as calm as ever while looking at her. ”Sure, but we can always go grab a warm drink or something if you’d prefer that.” A casual offer despite the fact that their presence at the ice rink was technically part of their jobs, one that came in the company of a gentle squeeze of her hand – almost as if a form of reassurance.

"Serena…” his voice showed clear concern which caused her mind to be at ease. While this situation was far from ideal, it wasn't the end of the world. At least, that's how he made her feel, which was good enough to release some of the burden or pressure that had been on her shoulders as of late. [break][break]

"Sure, but we can always go grab a warm drink or something if you’d prefer that.” He gently squeezed her hand to reassure her and she had to resist the urge to hug him right then and there. They were working and this wasn't the time nor place. Still, it was crazy just how safe and secure he made her feel. She hadn't felt this way since before the events of Sootopolis. [break][break]

Serena smiled at him as she shook her head. "I'd love to but that would be giving the reporter's reason to believe we were running from them. We just got here after all," she said as she referenced their work. Spinning around with a bright grin on her features she began to skate backwards. All while maintaining her hold on his hand. This little maneuver made her seem like she was beckoning him to follow her all while maintaining an air of joy and laughter. [break][break]

While her features stayed bright, the words that left her lips were quite dark in contrast. "I have a bit of a problem." The words leaving her lips caused her pain her chest right as she spoke them. She would hate for him to think she only came to him whenever she had a problem she couldn't solve on her own. But she continued regardless. [break][break]

"I'm sure you know about the plan to use my platform to help push the Rocket agenda." Of course he knew, he was heavily involved in her career, there was no way something as big as this would've been planned without his knowledge and approval. "However there's been a hiccup. My...." the words tasted bitter leaving her mouth. "My boyfriend, Danny Hall, seems to have taken it upon himself to reveal both of our identities to a League Officer." [break][break]

The more she said it the more she realized how truly fucked up this whole thing was. "It's my fault...I wasn't careful enough," she said as she bit her lip. 'I should've dumped him without any context and avoided all of this.' She thought to herself. "I have no way of knowing when this League official will pull the trigger and use this weapon against us. I need a contingency plan. I need you." she said as she squeezed his hand. [break][break]

"And I know I'm asking for a lot. I am so sorry. Words do not express how upset I am with myself for allowing things to get so far out of control. I know I have to take responsibility...for all of this."

Emotions hidden behind laughter and a smile.

How long ago was it that Mars learned to do as much? Too long, perhaps. A lifetime of smiling and pretending as if things were just as happy and perfect as anyone would imagine his life to be when the truth was that he continued to be pulled deeper and deeper into the darkness that now consumed him. He had learned to wear his smiles as weapons and armour; as a way to fight back, as a battle cry against all those who sought to take joy away from his life.

The process was always the same, and when Serena asked him to keep the act up, it was repeated: find reasons to smile despite your concerns. Reasons like snowfall in a place where such things don’t often happen. Lik ice skating. Like a beautiful woman holding his hand and beckoning him forward. Like the way she laughed, even if she too was keeping an act up…

So it was with a quiet laugh of his own that Mars followed after her, gliding over the ice and allowing her to guide him. ”I don’t blame you for choosing to tell him, Serena. When you’re with someone and when you love them, you want them to know the truth about you and accept you for who you are.” He looked at her as he spoke, but the rest was left unsaid: the fact that people may not always accept the truth no matter how much they may claim to love someone, that they may choose to leave them behind – to turn their back on them and abandon them despite all the love that had supposedly been shared and all the perfect moments.

Few things in this world were more painful than feeling as if someone you loved had betrayed you, and that was something Mars knew well – something he had unfortunately experienced all too recently. Wasn’t it ironic that their situations were so very similar yet so different?

”I’m guessing that this officer hasn’t been dealt with because it’s too risky, yes? The sooner this could all be beyond her the better. she truly believed that. These past few weeks have been torture and that was saying nothing for what she had to endure ever since the Sootopolis takeover. But her grief over losing her best friend and coming to terms with her near death experience at the hands of some stuck up and arrogant elite four member aside, the taste of bitter betrayal from someone that was supposed to care for her and love her had almost threatened to take her out of here. [break][break]

Just how much would she be forced to endure? When would enough be enough? She didn't have the answer but she knew she had long sense reached the end of her rope. She was on the verge of breaking down and disappearing from her core if things continued at this pace. Surely this must be the price she has to pay for her sins, but even so it was too much for her to bear. [break][break]

For as long as she could remember she never really had luck when it came to love. Perhaps this was the Universe's way of telling her she was meant to be alone. That she wasn't allowed to have happiness because she was a filthy sinner. Danny was supposed to be the one that was different, not the one that left her a damaged broken mess way worse than when she had met him. [break][break]

"I don’t blame you for choosing to tell him, Serena. When you’re with someone and when you love them, you want them to know the truth about you and accept you for who you are.” His words sounded sincere and Serena truly appreciated them. While he might not blame her she blamed herself and was unable to bring to forgive herself. [break][break]

She'd kept away from this very thing to prevent something like this from happening. And like a fool she allowed herself to be taken advantage of once more. She had no one to blame but herself at this point. "I’m guessing that this officer hasn’t been dealt with because it’s too risky, yes? She nodded slowly. He was, of course, right in his assumptions. Serena couldn't effectively touch Greyson and his pride would never allow him to take a bribe from the enemy. Especially after how things had ended between them at the night of the Soiree. The defeat was clearly written in Serena's eyes. But it was in that moment that Mars pulled her towards him, quickly closing the gap between them.[break][break]

His smile was radiant, so much so that she thought she might end up blind if she stared long enough. But beyond that it was forgiving and understanding. "Do you think you could handle having the world know who you really are? That you’re ready for that?” Serena's brows knitted together as she frowned slightly. "It's not like I have much of a choice." she said softly. [break][break]

That choice had been taken from her the moment her identity had been revealed without her consent. Hell, even before then, after Rocket stepped in and saved her career it no longer belonged to her. So when they said go she had to comply, that's just what it meant to sell your soul away. [break][break]

He gently guided her into a spin which she allowed. It was easier to follow his lead than to do her own, especially with her mind as muddied as it was right now. She'd already thought of that. "But doing so would reveal I had secrets that I wanted to keep in the first place. If my goal is to place distrust in the league I have to be someone who's reliable not someone untrustworthy right off the bat." she responded coolly. "What about your boyfriend? Won't he fix his own mistakes?"[break][break]

This sentence caught her off guard. She felt herself freeze as her jaw became taut. Empty promises came back to her memory as in addition to the recent bitter betrayal she had the unfortunate pleasure of witnessing via Serenity. Danny had apologized, said he never meant to hurt her and promised to never do so again only for her to learn later that he met with the one person on this earth that was her true sworn enemy. [break][break]

In a instant she felt like she could burst into a rage before it all melted away and she felt helpless once more. "I think that's impossible for him." She admitted with a mildly bitter expression. "I can't even trust that he'd want to." It's true, after all he knew exactly how hurt Serena had been and he knew who was responsible. [break][break]

She never hid that knowledge from him and it was common knowledge to all Rocket members why Katherine was on the top of their shit list. Still, unsatisfied with hurting her in other ways he had to go for the one that would utterly break her. "I just....don't understand what I did." she said as her voice broke softly. Her head was lowered so those prying eyes wouldn't be able to see just how much pain she was in. Pain that even the best actress would have trouble masking.

Serena Malcolm felt helpless, that much became obvious to him as Mars listened to her talk. He could see it in her gaze: the hesitation, the doubt, the fear, the concern, the pain. For how long had she worried about all this before deciding to come to him for help? Had she at least talked to anyone else?

A Rocket Beast was supposed to be Team Rocket’s symbol of strength, and yet here was Serena: weakened by a foolish boy’s betrayal… A betrayal not only of her trust, but of the organisation itself. In the past, people had been killed for less.

”Do they have any proof of these accusations other than their word?” They must have, or Serena wouldn’t be this worried. Yet, in Mars’ short interactions with her boyfriend, he had seemed devoted to her – as if he would do anything to be with her. What had happened since then? Had his infatuation faded away? Had he realised that he was in over his head? Did the lifestyle of a Rocket grunt and what’s demanded of them scare him away?

All possibilities seemed likely, but Mars didn’t ask, instead simply slowing down until they reached a natural pause on the ice. He stood there for a moment; next to her and holding her hand. ”The only thing you did wrong was choosing to trust someone who didn’t deserve your trust, but that’s a mistake anyone could have made.”

It was a mistake he himself had made as well, so how could he blame her?

There was a gentle squeeze of her hand where a hug should have been, ever too aware of the cameras around them. Even if it was what he would have done, this was not the time or the place for that, but he could at least give her his advice:

”You can’t let your guilt consume you, Serena. It’s not what you deserve, and there’s no benefit in that. You can blame them all you want for what they have done, and even seek your revenge if you want to do that, but what you should focus on first and foremost is fixing things. We’ll make this better. Together.”

There it was: not only his advice, but the offer to help. For her sake, and for that of the whole of Team Rocket.

Sure they might not have literal proof that she was a member of Rocket but there was sure to be some footage of the altercation between herself, Greyson and Danny at the soiree. That could be enough to cause suspicion which would lead some to believe his words, true or otherwise. [break][break]

They slowed down to a halt and Serena's worried gaze lifted to look at him. "The only thing you did wrong was choosing to trust someone who didn’t deserve your trust, but that’s a mistake anyone could have made.” He wasn't wrong, she knew that but after the second time going through the wringer it just felt like there was something fundamentally lacking in her judgement process. Mars squeezed her hand as he tried to reassure her. "You can’t let your guilt consume you, Serena. It’s not what you deserve, and there’s no benefit in that. You can blame them all you want for what they have done, and even seek your revenge if you want to do that, but what you should focus on first and foremost is fixing things. We’ll make this better. Together.”[break][break]

He was right, she had plenty of time for self-loathing later. She needed to get to work and she needed to execute this thing flawlessly. Secure her position first and then she'll make them all pay for ever fucking with her in the first place. Only after that was accomplished could she wallow in her self-pity. [break][break]

"You're right. Thank you, so much. Seriously. I owe you big time." she said as she offered him a smile. Before glancing around them. "I think I'll take you up on that hot drink offer now." she said as she attempted to lighten things up a little. She was so thankful for Mars and everything he has done and will do for her. [break][break]

Just thinking about it got her all sentimental and emotional. "I wish I'd met you first before him." she said softly before turning her back to him. She meant what she said. If she'd gotten to know Mars better before Danny or even her first-ex-that-shall-not-be-named, things in her life might have turned out different. He truly was kind to his core. [break][break]

But just like her he had to change due to the people around him. That she knew, even if he had a habit of being secretive. He wouldn't be in Rocket otherwise. She finally released her grip on his hand. She began to skate towards the exit to take a little break but turned a little to look back at him. "You coming?"
