She hasn't gone ice skating in years.[break][break]

But Luka has fond memories of it: holding her parents' hands while they led her around the ice, twirling in a little skaters skirt, having an innocent date at the rink as a schoolgirl. The pop-up rink in downtown Slateport is mostly full of families and couples, but that doesn't stop her from trying to rent some skates for herself to relive some childhood nostalgia.[break][break]

A sign near the rink advertises a discount for couples, further rubbing it in. Luka stares at it for a moment before she joins the end of the line, alone.

the sign near the rink rubs salt into the wound, and though it would've been so easy to just ignore it and walk away, he instead chooses to approach the end of the line, joining the lonely singles who just want to have fun ice skating.

why should they have to pay more?

so, he taps the person in front of him's shoulder, then flashes her a smile.

A softly startled noise sounds in the back of her throat, like the little muurp a cat makes upon waking. Luka turns to regard the stranger with an innocent curiosity, roseate bangs falling into her face with the movement.[break][break]

She looks between him and the colorful signboard, and one can almost see the cogs in her head turning as she goes from utterly confused to gets it.[break][break]

"That's cheating," she says, a playful smile already tugging on her lips.

"It is," Luka insists. But she takes the extended hand anyways after a moment of thought, fingers radiating a gentle warmth through thin gloves.[break][break]

"I'm Luka," she answers, voice soft. Their ruse is over if they get caught making introductions.[break][break]

But she might be the one to ruin it anyways. Luka Chêne isn't a rule breaker. She rarely sets a toe out of line. As they near the rental counter she starts looking more and more nervous, teeth worrying cherry-red lips.

cian maher is definitely a liar and a rule breaker, enough to have both of them covered. he squeezes her hand, reassuring her as they near the rental counter. he leans close, shoulder brushing against hers as he whispers.

"it'll be okay. just follow my lead, and trust me."

it's a hard ask to trust a complete stranger, but at least the smile he offers her is nice and sweet. it's as nice as the one he flashes to the person behind the counter.

"two pairs of skates for us, please!"

and to sell the fact that they're a lovey-dovey couple, he tugs on her hand, pulling her close before kissing her cheek.

She's easy that way, so innocently naïve. So eager to see the good in an absolute stranger. Luka nods and steps up to the counter with a smile, one that doesn't fade despite a sudden rush of nerves. Years of practice are good for some things, after all.[break][break]

That composure breaks when he kisses her cheek. Emerald irises widen and her cheeks go crimson. "Th- ah, t-t-thank you..." she stammers out to the employee, who couldn't care less.[break][break]

With skates in hand they turn away from the counter, but Luka's voice remains low. "Y-you didn't have to lay it on quite so thick, you know!"

Luka bumps his shoulder right back. A pout has settled on her face, cheeks jutted adorably. She doesn't look mad— she looks like a chipmunk.[break][break]

"It could be," she says with a soft huff. Sitting down on the bench, she starts to unlace her boots. "I could be married, for all you know! Or, or...hmph." [break][break]No other good excuses come to her, so she just blurts it out: "It's embarrassing!"

She keeps the act up while she peels off her boots and tugs the skates on. They're not easy to lace; by the time she gets them tight enough her hands are striped red and white from pulling so hard on the laces.[break][break]

"Mmm...with whipped cream?" Luka smiles, having clearly already forgiven him. "I accept!"[break][break]

She stands then, or attempts to. The skates wobble under her and she stumbles, lunging forwards in a poor attempt to maintain balance.

"Not quite. I used to skate when I was a kid but I haven't gone in— h-hey, watch out!"[break][break]

She tries to catch Cian as he goes over, reaching out with the intrinsic instinct to protect. Except she's still not steady on her own feet, and the added weight makes her lose her already precarious balance. They go down in a flailing heap of limbs and glinting skates, making quite the spectacle of themselves in front of all the other couples and families around them.[break][break]

Nearby a few children giggle behind their hands, standing with ease on their own skates.
