Their trek continued into the forests and, in a surprisingly short amount of time, the sun overhead was dimmed by sprawling branches. Despite the change in scenery, their conversation didn't falter.

"Perceptive! I'm a Fire and Ice-type specialist... but I enjoy most other types as well. There's something to be said about utility."

In ROCKET, there was no excuse to be caught unprepared. Barnaby had slowly begun amassing Pokémon as soon as he immigrated to Hoenn and now had a sizable collection that included most types. One type he didn't have, however, was poison.

Unfortunately the toxic bug that crawled out of the bushes beside him didn't really spark his interest. It wasn't the poison aspect, but the bug aspect that compelled Barnaby to pass on the VENIPEDE. There were few Bug-type Pokémon whose appearance he could tolerate - he was just vain in that way.

The small FENNEKIN that skulked nearby was another story, though. It seemed to be stalking the VENIPEDE, but was doing a poor job of it. With a smile Barnaby sent his STARMIE to take care of the tiny fox and the insect both.

"What about you? Why poison?" He asked the last question more generally - not just in relation to Poison-type Pokémon, but also poison in a broader sense. "What drew you to such a research topic?"

“I would not call myself much of a poison type specialist….” She started, trailing off briefly as she watched the Pokemon they happened upon. Naturally, her companion would take care of them. But it was always interesting to see how they acted still. They had caught a Venipede earlier already, but she was not picky in that regard, simply using another ball on the newcomer once the Starmie had taken care of it. Maybe they were of opposite genders and she could get them to breed. It was always useful to have at least two of something, one way or another. Redundancy was always important.

But still….she had not continued her thought there, now had she? “I do not use them a lot to battle. Any Pokemon is potentially worthy of…study, I guess. Poison simply interests me because chemistry does. And there is something fascinating about introducing foreign substances to an organism and judge its reactions to that. Did you know that with some poisons, its actually your own defensive reaction that ends up harming or killing you, not the poison itself?......There just is so much variety…”

A Poké Ball was lobbed softly at the FENNEKIN, securing yet another fox to add to his collection. Once the Pokémon was captured, Barnaby's attention was yet again given to the woman beside him. He listened as she detailed her interest in poison - well, really chemistry.

A low whistle passed through Barnaby's lips. "No, I did not know that. What a way to go. Your own body killing you."

A disturbing thought, to be sure. Her wistfulness about the whole subject was a little disturbing as well - but what else could you expect from a ROCKET scientist?

They continued to walk through the wood, the sunlight streaming through the branches overhead beginning to wane. They'd been at this for awhile now. Barnaby casually thought about suggesting to head back, until his focus suddenly snapped to something ahead of them.

A TURTONATOR and SEVIPER ferociously duking it out! The snake was wrapped around the carapace of the turtle trying its best to sink its fangs into flesh. Meanwhile, the TURTONATOR's arms flailed wildly around; it's actions were in vain, however, as it didn't have the reach to grab ahold of its assailant.

Barnaby kinda felt bad for the turtle, so he nodded for his Pokémon to intervene.

More Poison types. Wonderful. She wasn’t exactly one to reject other types, strictly speaking, but she was getting increasingly elated from these captures. They had a fairly decent haul and even her partner seemed to get what he was seeking. There really was little more that she could ask for, so she remained alert and content, balls at the ready while Pokemon were served to her on a silver platter by someone much better at fighting.
“To be fair, if you get that into your system, you won’t be able to tell what is happening anyway. Not like most people can self-diagnose the symptoms of a poison to begin with. And even if they do, it is often difficult to find out ex post what happened. Most poisons you need to already know you are looking for to find them during an obduction. That’s why you want those with exotic effects. Makes it way harder for anyone to prove that a poisoning even took place.” A bit morbid, maybe, but she enjoyed the lecturing part of this little excursion. It wasn’t often that she could explain these sorts of things to a receptive audience. Most of the other Rocket scientists either didn’t care or they already knew. Kind of pointless to re-explain things, after all.

However, when her capturing partner turned his attention fully towards the sight ahead of them, she followed suit, falling silent and letting him handle this. Seviper was definitely on her list of Pokemon to catch, so she held onto her ball, ready to throw if and when that battle was decided, either by those two or outside intervention. She had no intentions at all to let this one go.

His Pokémons' psychic powers truly came in handy in this ferocious situation. Instead of trying to physically separate the two battling monsters, instead Evangeline and Delphine psychically halted the fight and slowly pulled them apart.

While the DELPHOX kept them rigid, the STARMIE shot off two consecutive Thunder Waves in order to securely immobilize them. They were both already weak from the prolonged struggle, so it was easy enough for Barnaby to then capture them.

In the ensuing chaos, other creatures seemed to be disturbed as well. From the underbrush came a pair of Pokémon, one of which caught Barnaby's eye immediately - a shiny ODDISH.

"Delphine, don't let that one escape." Barnaby began, pointing to the Grass-type. "Evangeline, take care of the Quilava."

His girls did as they were told and, soon enough, even more Pokémon had been detained. How many was that now? Looking around, evening was quickly descending around them.

"I think it's best we head back now. Don't want to be caught in the dark out here." He suggested, handing her one of the Poké Balls.

The pandemonium was calming down, she figured. At the very least, now that she had thrown a ball at the Quilava, that should hopefully get the last of the wild Pokemon right into a ball. Oddly enough, her companion had decided to go for the Oddish, even though he usually went for the fire types. But she figured that was just the nature of shinies. People always got somewhat competitive about those, though she did not really do. They were just another colour than others. Was she a shiny human because she had green hair? It was silly.

But that was fine here. Sure, she could probably pull rank and make him trade this, but why would she? After all, she already had an Oddish of her own. Well, an evolved form. But that was good enough. She would find some way to make use of that Quilava, of course. Maybe as a guinea pig for these weird distortions. Those she still had to investigate, so some disposable Pokemon would be useful for that.
She took that for now and accepted the outcomes as they fell. “Well, you are the muscle here, so I will defer to your opinion on the matter. Your Pokemon will eventually run out of juice, after all. We can always come back here some other time. Most wild ones will probably run from us by now, after all.”
