few knew the area, but one pilot by the name of angelo vestri would know just as well as any rocket exactly where roach had meant when he’d suggested fishing at the spot.

the sun beat down over sand at the edge of slateport, and just within the shade of the cove sat roach at the end of his dock, line already cast out, a bottle of bourbon at his side.

resting at the bottom of the fairly shallow depths, safely towards the rocky walls, was his octillery. his cubone stared down at its reflection, sitting quietly on his right.

”not a bad day, huh boomer?”

wedging an expensive rod into a space in the boards, he then twisted to pour himself a glass.

Roach brings the bait to lure in men, while Angelo brings what’ll persuade the fish to join the party. [break][break]

Wooden beams creak beneath the weight of his boots when the pilot reaches the spot, footfalls on decking long weathered from the ocean announcing his presence before he can part his lips in calling. [break][break]

He’d always been fond of the sound of water lapping against foundations, nostalgia and the present washing over like the tide. It’s a sound associated with home. [break][break]

“Hey. Just me, Boss.” [break][break]

As he approaches, the impish looking Floatzel trotting by his side sniffs at the underside of the plastic bag that sways in Angelo’s grip. In the other a fishing rod is propped over his shoulder, handled about as casually as the price tag – or lack of – would suggest. [break][break]

“Here. Thought you’d appreciate these,” he says, holding out the offerings with a rustle when he reaches Ritual's owner.[break][break]

Angelo appreciates them, too. He'd gotten them on discount this morning at the local market. Who cares they were bottom of the barrel quality, when they were basically giving them away for free?[break][break]

And his Floatzel, standing on hindlegs to try and boldly nose at the bag, seems to agree. [break][break]

“Better take 'em quick. You've got competition.”

the sound of the waves was definitely pleasant, their sound breathy and almost metallic in the open-bellied cave. it didn’t give roach feelings of nostalgia, but he did find it relaxing. a perfect place for a drink, really. maybe even better than the bar, though he’d probably never say it.

he looked over his shoulder at angelo’s voice, and drawled, ”how’s it goin’, man? come getchya some whiskey.”

he looked up at the bag of poles. he thought maybe he’d line up a couple.

”why, thank you.”

looking in, he chuckled at the quality, but didn’t note it. in his book, the cheap ones worked just fine. it wasn’t like he was out deep-sea fishing. roach stayed on land, primarily.

he poured whiskey, handed it towards angelo, and then went to work tying hooks.

”aw, we’ll see.” one tied. on to the next. ”it ain’t gonna swim into these hooks , right?”

his cubone looked up, waving his bone as though to say hello to the floatzel.

“Music to my ears.” He muses as the sweet sound of whisky pools into a container with a pleasant glug, glug, glug. [break][break]

Angelo doesn’t hesitate in taking a spot next to Roach, ass hitting the deck with a sigh that exhales all earlier stresses into the briny breeze. [break][break]

Taking the offered whisky with a lazy smile the glass is tilted in a gesture of gratitude, catching the light, before it’s brought to his lips. [break][break]

“Ah – an’ suddenly the day is a hell of a lot better.” [break][break]

Whisky was quickly becoming Angelo’s drink of choice, now that he had some spare cash to divulge in pleasures beyond bills. But whereas cheap rum was the go-to to make his brain swim with euphoric, numb bliss, this always tasted too good to knock back in one. [break][break]

And Roach always knew the best stuff. [break][break]

“Not if he doesn’t want to become bait himself, he won't,” he side-eyes Weasel, who isn’t quite daring enough to take the tasty snacks from Roach’s hand. Instead, the Floatzel shifts attention to the Cubone, waving his twin-tails in greeting.[break][break]

“C’mon, hand some over. Let me in on the action.” The whisky is set aside for wiggly grubs and sharp hooks.

the raised glass was met with a nod and a raise of his own off the deck, glinting similarly in what sun reflected off the waters below.

at angelo’s sentiment about the improvement of his day, he grinned, ”whiskey’ll do that.”

peeling open a container, he picked around some dirt to find a nice baby caterpie, before maneuvering it down onto a hook through the top. conversation continued in the process.

”so how ya been, angelo?”

he was soon taking a few steps away to reel back for another cast.

meanwhile, cubone remained where it was on the dock, kicking tiny feet over the edge and regarding the floatzel another moment before seeming to smile with its eyes.

Behind him, the fox-faced creature slinks into the Slateport waters with a controlled splash.

Angelo doesn’t look back, concentrating instead on the heady aroma of whisky beneath his nose awakening his senses. Another sip is taken before the glass is swapped for a tiny Wurmple, destined for the end of a hook.

“Busy... But I like being kept on the move,” he responds simply, tongue slightly peeking from his whisky-kissed lips as he preps the bait. But of course, Roach would no doubt already know that.

“Not too hot on the fuel exepnse, though. Dewford and back is a real gas-guzzler.”

Rod all prepped and ready to go, beneath the weight of his boots the weathered wood creaks once more, Angelo positioning himself far enough from Roach so their lines didn’t intertwine.

“What about you?” He casts out with a satisfying whsssh.

Ignoring the hook that flies over his head, Weasel deflates its rings to dip beneath the surface. Only to pop its eyes above the surface in a different place, playfully squirting water at Boomer.
