Approaching rent days always brings a slightly more urgent gait to his steps along the Lilycove docks. This month was no exception.

And Angelo was getting tired of it.

Tomorrow his dues were owed and the modest figures in his bank account left him wanting.

He could pay it, sure. But he’d be scraping the bottom of his pockets until the next job came in (whenever that was) and that wasn’t exactly what he would call a 'liberating experience'.

One visit to virgil roach last night saw this problem solved, Angelo leaving Ritual only when he'd secured himself a job for today. Now the pilot busies himself with preparations to depart the seaplane hangar he rents - with a slight hangover.

“Artemis. Up.” Obediently the Lycanroc hops through the open cockpit door and settles down into the co-pilot seat.

Patiently waiting while Angelo gets to work completing his pre-flight checks.

As if it were the greatest irony of all, the reason why Mr. Del Mar had decided to take the rest of day off and make his way down to Slateport’s marina was to distract himself from thinking about money and all things of the like. His concerns may have been far different from those of most people, but banker as he was, there was no denying that money was as if a foundational pillar of his life – often a stress-inducing one.

Take a step back. Decompress. Relax.

Those were things Mars didn’t often give himself time to do until the past couple of months, but they were as if a requirement now, and so he did the one thing he knew would stop him from thinking of all of that: go sailing.

Sadly, his concerns were about much more than money and his businesses these days, and perhaps that was why he ended up sailing to Lilycove out of all places. To the docks, and then even walking to an all too familiar seaplane hangar…

”Busy day?” Standing at the entrance, a hand is raised in greeting, coming paired with that smile that is forever filled with too much self-assurance.

Proof of an extensive, daily routine bleeds into every touch and careful flicker of cerulean eyes as Angelo paces his beloved aircraft. There’s no doubt he could conduct these checks blindfolded by now. Definitely while conversing with someone else.

And yet as a familiar voice echoes through the hangar, Angelo doesn’t even turn to face his unexpected visitor.

Not because he can’t, but because he knows exactly who it is.

“Yeah.” He calls over to Martín del Mar , crouching down on the wooden decking to inspect one of the floats. Intentionally taking his time.

“What do you want, Mars?” He stands then, finally peering over his shoulder at the man who, nine times out of ten, had a business deal on the forefront of their interactions.

The smirk on the pilot's lips tells Mars that he would gamble this wasn’t one of those 'one out of ten' moments.

“I'm going to bet you’re not here to invite me to a game of Hazard.”

Nine times out of ten, when Mars stops by Angelo’s hangar, it is indeed for business reasons. Something for him to deliver, something for him to pick up, somewhere he’d like the pilot to fly him to because it’s not the sort of place to which Mars can just take his private jet.

The latter may perhaps apply in this case, if the conversation goes in the way Mars wishes for it to go…

”For you to end up trying to cheat again and for me to end up throwing you in the water? No thanks.” Angelo’s smirk is matched by one of the banker’s own, the reminder of their encounter months ago at the ren faire even earning a light yet clearly amused chuckle.

”I have a question for you, actually. I was sailing nearby, so I figured I’d come ask you in person. Be honoured.”

At this point, he winks.

“Probably for the best. I wouldn’t want to risk you getting pushy again.”

Judging by the smirk on his lips, it’s apparent that he takes delight in the hilarity of the shove at the Ren Faire bar.

However his smug aura is quickly banished…

Mars winks at him and Angelo – whereas his poker face is usually on point – can’t help the sneer of his lip, brow knitting together in a contortion of disgust and amusement.

“Got something in your eye there, man? Should get that checked out, pinkeye ain't fun.”

In his wake, the wooden decking creaks beneath the stride of Angelo’s boots as he brushes past the banker, heading towards where he’d abandoned his duffel bag.

It's sat near a weathered, white set of plastic chairs and table where the other seaplane pilots sit and sometimes chat between flights. And more often than not, play cards.

“C’mon then, as you came all this way - what’s on your mind?” The bag is dumped on the table and unzipped for one last check of its own.

Mars’ own smirk does not fade when disgust paints its colours upon the pilot’s expression, nor at the mention of pinkeye, but he does respond with three simple words and a laugh:

Too casual given the reasons that led to this visit?

Maybe so, yet stress and worry are exactly the two things Mars is supposed to be avoiding at all cost (even if it proves increasingly difficult when he’s constantly being told that Hoenn is doomed).

He simply follows after Angelo, taking the liberty of sitting upon one of the plastic chairs.

”I came all this way because of your expert knowledge of Hoennian geography, actually.” It could almost be taken as another sarcastic jab, but the fact is that his words are as honest as can be. After all, if Mars didn’t believe and even trust in angelo vestri’s abilities, he wouldn’t work with him.

”There’s somewhere I want to go, and it’s not exactly the sort of place that shows up in most maps.”

There it is: the call of adventure. And, unbeknownst to Mars (although he hopes for it), also one Angelo happens to be well acquainted with.

Now that gets a hearty laugh out of him.

Angelo’s smirk widens, the smug satisfaction of coaxing a gut reaction out of someone displayed brazenly all over his face. Especially so when it was making a pompous façade crack into crude casualness.

“You came to visit me, dickhead.”

Fortunately for Mars, Angelo was on a strict time schedule and so his attention falls back to his duffel bag rather than continuing to push his luck. Even when the banker plops his ass in a chair right under his nose.

It’s while he’s ensuring that all of his documents in order, some legit and some not so much, that the hook is poked into his flesh. Wiggling deeper with every word. Gradually, his calloused fingers slow, attention ensnared…

Because Mars is right. Angelo is called to the song of adventure like hearing a siren song on the wind, helplessly drawn to the thrill of its unknown promises.

But the real bait that he dangles before his senses, is not one that is necessarily spoken in so many words.

It’s the promise of potentially filling in some blank spaces on his maps, to tread on land or fly above the sea to new worlds untouched. His wonderlust insatiable. It's the triumph of already having this alleged ‘undocumented site’ filled in by the stoke of his penmanship.

Both whet his appetite like a fish to the snare.

“A’ight, what've you got for me? But you better make it quick. Busy day, remember?”

There had been a time when Mars craved the unknown; a time when he had been filled with a sense of adventure and a desire to live a life full of fantastical exploits just like the ones he used to read about when trapped in the gilded cage that was his family’s villa back in Canalave. And, honestly, perhaps all that still exists hidden somewhere deep within him, but undeniably so, the reason why he came to visit Angelo with this unusual inquiry was not an explorer’s wish, but a need.

Something Hoenn might need, if everything he’s heard is to be believed.

Has anyone ever told you you’re way too impatient?” The banker smirks, teasing coming with ease and being prefered over having to remind himself just how serious this might be – how ridiculous it sounds, how insane. Still, Mars sighs, meeting the younger man’s gaze. ”The Regirock ruins. Do you know where they are?”

The Regirock ruins.

Discomfort finds itself masked beneath a practiced raised brow, behind a busying of hands over his equipment. It’s a reflex by this point, squashing down the darker aspects – the parts of himself – he doesn’t want others to see. Letting mischief and sarcasm take its place.

Angelo’s exterior is always warm, when cold bleeds deep into his veins.

The Regirock ruins were not a place that the pilot holds in fond regard, it’s stone walls lined with many shadows. Personal hauntings. Even one year later.

His whetted appetite for adventure quickly turns dry in his mouth, like the golden tomb that had clogged his throat back then and in his memories, still.

“Y’know they’re not called that to be cute, right?” He exhales, looking down at Mars with a slow curl of his lip. Just the slightest mocking. That was confirmation enough that the pilot knew of the legendary temple’s whereabouts.

“Last I saw it, it was a pile of rubble in the sand. What d’you think you’re going to find down there?” Besides the desert you're guaranteed to carry in your ass for months.

It had been a hunch.

One based on logic, but still a hunch nevertheless.

After all, Mars’ business relation with Angelo has always centered around the latter’s ability as a pilot and his knowledge of the region’s geography, he knows well of his daring nature, and above all, of his apparent fondness for a good excursion. So, as he sees it, the possibility of angelo vestri knowing where the Regirock Ruins are or to have even been there before is all too likely, and that’s exactly why he had decided to come all this way and ask.

And he had been right.

If it weren’t for the nature of the inquiry and the sudden tension that hangs in the air despite Angelo’s mockery, he’d give himself a metaphorical pat on the back.

”Do the reasons really matter? I just need you to take me there.”

What does he think he’ll find?
[break][break]
In truth, not even Mars himself knows the answer to that, but how could he ever say as much? How could he admit to the fact that this is no more than him grasping at straws and hoping for an answer to one too many unfinished questions…

He could never bring himself to do that.

”It’s important, Angelo.”

Is it, though?

And he’s right.

It doesn’t matter what Mars’s reasons are for wishing to explore a mound of rubble.

Not if he pays him well enough to make it worth his while.

Even if his curiosity does fidget at the declaration of importance, seriously painted in the attempt to convince his hand.

Cerulean eyes narrow, only the slow advance of his duffel bag zipper being sealed shut echoing in response at first.

In truth, Angelo was none too enthusiastic about stepping back into that desert, not after what he’d left behind in its crumbling debris last year. But the chance to get his fists around some more cash was ever tempting and the adventurous spirit did still tug, unquenched. Satisfaction always fleeting, wanting more.

Even if he isn’t sure what he would find on his return to the ruins.

“Okay. I’ll take you.”

With a swing of his bag, Angelo hauls it over his shoulder in a wordless display of dwindling time. Yet he doesn’t step off towards his plane, not when in the midst of a deal.

“But I’m not going to bullshit you, Mars. This one’s not going to be cheap. It's a bitch to get to.”

If he’s going back there, it has to be worth his while, and he's eagle-eyed an opportunity he'd dare not squander.

“Not like that’s going to be a problem when it's so important, right?”

In the end, it all comes down to money; to what sum is enough to tip the scales in his favour and make Angelo agree to take him anywhere he wishes to go.

Is it a fool’s greed or is it actually that nothing all that terrible happened to him during his time at the ruins?

Mars almost wishes for the latter, wishes that they’ll find no more than a pile of rubble with some important archaeological clues, but considering the few tales he has been told about the place, he knows that it would be foolish not to be cautious.

”Angelo, when have I ever not made a job worth your while?”
[break][break]
The question is asked with a slight smirk, but his words are true: for as many risks as Mars has asked the pilot to take in the past, he has always been compensated accordingly. It’s only fair.

”Why are you so wary about it, anyway? Did something happen to you there?”

There’s a story there, that much is clear, but is it one he’ll get to hear?

Resistance prickles beneath his skin, defensive barbs extending in response to Mars’s probing question. The other man was attempting to dig around in the ruins of his memory a little too boldly, for Angelo’s liking.

Back the hell off and save the excavating for the temple, Mars…

“Why’d you think?” An eyebrow is raised, only a soft chuckle filling the space between them. Easy. Taunting. Normal.

“I'm taking you into a desert. Last thing I need is the potential shitshow that'll come from accidently losing Mr POG Bank in a sandstorm.” He chuckles.

Angelo had no desire to tell the banker about his first trip into the Regirock temple, not when time ticks short and scrutinous eyes attempt to pierce beyond invisible boundaries.

He’d enact story time on his own terms.

For now he has a job to get to.

“Anyway I’ve got to make moves, man. Someone else beat you to the punch for my attention today.” Shrugging the weight of his duffel bag on his shoulder, Angelo tilts his chin towards his floating seaplane, Artemis sticking her head out of the open cockpit door as she waits.

“But I’ll send you over the details when I get back. A'ight?”

And so, Angelo extends a hand…

So, angelo vestri is not only a skilled pilot, but also skilled at dodging questions. It’s a shame, but Mars decides not to keep pushing the topic for now, instead making a mental note to ask again later while his own chuckle mirrors that of his companion.

A smirk continues to tug at his lips, both playful and teasing, yet the thought of the ruins remains – wondering what exactly they will find out there in the desert. Is it really just rubble left? Are there really no signs of Regirock’s presence?

”Fine, fine… I won’t take anymore of your time.”

For now, that is.

A firm handshake and a confident smile, amber eyes meeting those as blue as the sky.
