Waves of change had washed over Team Rocket when Sootopolis had been taken from the League. Waves many may have perceived as no more than the natural tide finally catching up with the organisation and nothing to concern themselves with. Yet, hadn't much of the world itself been changed by the erosion the currents caused overtime? Waves could carry them to their destination as easily as they could sink their vessel.

Some would let the waves take them, putting their trust in them. Some would resist them until their force gave them no choice but to give in. And some, the more stupid ones, would try to run away from them in fear of what they might bring…

”Clare Blake. Twenty-four. Sootopolis native.” The information was displayed on the screen of the admin’s phone, the manila folder where he had originally come across it remaining at his office since it would have been rather inconvenient to bring it all this way with him. ”I asked Clare to wait for us at the shooting range. She doesn’t suspect anything for now, but I want you to get her talking about her thoughts of Rocket’s takeover of the city.”

Of course, her status as Sootopolis native was far from the actual reason why Mars wanted to discuss such things with Clare Blake, but there was no need to reveal the rest of the information just yet.

He looked at his companion, nina larson, someone who he had also chosen specifically for this task despite having never interacted with her before this day.

she wasn’t spared these crashing waves. rather, she felt immobile like the figurehead of a ship through a storm, very nearly drowning time and time again in what she’d gotten herself into. it was taxing in all sorts of ways.

her meticulous glamour hid the lack of sleep under her eyes, which peered down at the screen he held out. the nerves were real. an admin? that morning, when she’d been summoned, she'd felt sick until she had to arrive, and she felt sick still. for some reason, she’d never expected to meet any of them at the top.

she looked up at him, lashes like bushy black butterflies framing carefully veiled fear and suspicion. she was a specialist when it came to tricks and lies. he had something else up his sleeve.

mouth dry, she cleared her throat lightly.

”sure. no problem.”

the corners of her mouth rose, doing her best to look confident. she was top-notch, but to be in the presence of this level of authority was beyond nerve-wracking.

she looked towards the shooting range and then back.

”are you coming too?”

His own promotion had come soon after Sootopolis had been taken, as if a result of such a change, but Martín del Mar had given himself such a name for a reason, and when it came to waves, he knew how to sail through them.

Or so he believed, at least.

”I am.” One expert actor could recognize another and whatever Nina may have felt about her current situation remained well hidden – for the most part. There was a small crack or two in the mask, but that much was to be expected given how little information she had been given and the obvious difference in their ranks.

Had she not worried, Mars would have considered her a fool or questioned her sanity.

”Alright, let’s not waste anymore time then.” He was a busy man, after all.

Putting his phone away, he approached the shooting range, within it encountering no other than Clare Blake. She had a cigarette in hand, but judging by the slight shaking of her hand, they had probably caught her trying to smoke the nerves away.

”Oh… Mister del Mar, sir. You called for me?”

”I did. Clare, have you met Nina?”
[break][break]
His tone was calm, yet unlike his usual demeanour, no smile illuminated the admin’s expression, the stare on his amber gaze being both severe and stern.

she was used to being a tool for powerful figures. she had been raised for it, even, but danger had never seemed quite as real as it had with rocket. del mar was a different breed, and she felt like she could see it in his eyes.

no more wasting time. nina nodded, following along.

as they approached the shooting range, any prior trace of her rampant nerves had been swallowed. she was smooth, donning a mask clear of any novice discernible crack. innocent, soft, smiling like she might as well have brought a homemade batch of cookies.

meekly, she ducked her head and approached, outstretching a hand with a frail grip. even her voice had changed.

”hi, clare. it’s nice to meet you.”

He had told her it was up to her and he had meant it when he said it.

Instead of taking the initiative, the admin turned his attention to the shooting range once Clare and Nina had been introduced – to this place he had grown so very familiar with. Martín del Mar may not have been a man who often found himself needing to be the one pulling the trigger (literally, at least), but that did not mean he wasn’t ready to do so when the situation called for it.

Clare Blake watched him, gaze alert, attempting to hide her fidgeting as she brought a half-consumed cigarette up to her lips. ”Do you know what he wants?” She whispered to Nina, making sure he wouldn’t hear her. Almost as if she assumed by default that nina larson was in the same situation as her. ”Why he called us here?”

A shot rang through the range then, bullet cutting through a paper target bearing a man’s silhouette. Ninth ring. Way too close to the central ‘X’.

Clare almost shuddered.

realization washed over her. clare thought she was in trouble just like her, apparently. perhaps that had been an intentional setup. she would take advantage of it.

”i’m not sure.”

her face remained friendly, reassuring, but there was a sudden sadness in her eyes. as though she was mourning something, and trying to hide it.

her voice became hushed. ”mr. del mar is a scary man, though. i don’t think it’s good.”

she sighed, wrapping her arms around lightly around herself.

”did you do anything?”

It was at this point that Clare paused, and if Nina paid attention, she would see the way her brow furrowed just so slightly, as if attempting to recall anything that could have led her to end up in this situation. Minimal as it may have been, disguised by all her worry and nerves, there was a spark of realisation in the young woman’s gaze.

At first, Mars said nothing, acting as if he were focused on the shooting target while paying close attention to what he could hear of their conversation. A glance was spared for both women then, raising a question:

”Clare, you’re from Hoenn, right?” He knows the answer already, of course.
[break][break]
Clare cleared her throat, looking at the admin, her voice barely going beyond a whisper. “Yeah… I grew up in Sootopolis…”
